Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of display of variable messages by means of light emitting elements arranged as a matrix on a display surface of a panel.
- This type of display panel is used in particular for the display of alphanumeric characters or graphic elements, in outdoor, on road and motorway networks for example.
- Contrast can be defined as the ratio of the luminance emitted by the lit panel, on the luminance reflected by the panel off, for a given external illumination.
- the minimum contrast values to be observed vary depending on the applications and countries. As an example, the panels are asked with variable messages intended for road signs, a contrast to less than 10 for an external illumination of 40,000 lux, applied at an incidence of 10 ° above the horizon. To increase the contrast, it is always desirable to have the luminance reflected by panel turned off as low as possible, regardless of technology adopted for light emitting elements.
- the length of these visors is directly related to the pixel size and the minimum incidence of the sun's rays wants to avoid reflection by light emitting elements.
- the visor length is at least 57mm, if you want to avoid all reflections for them solar rays with an incidence greater than or equal to 10 ° above from the horizon.
- the visors contribute to significantly reduce the solar reflections on light emitting elements, due to their geometry and layout, they significantly increase the total area illuminated by the sun, and, being black in color, like the matter surrounding the pixels, they act as real sensors solar, constituting an important contribution of calories in the vicinity of light emitting elements.
- Such a temperature is detrimental to operation of most of the known light emitting elements, such as light emitting diodes, for example.
- the aim of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks, by dissociating the support of the light emitting elements and the means for intercepting the sun's rays and providing for a chimney between the display surface and said means, which allows significantly improve the efficiency of forced air circulation the optionally.
- the invention therefore relates to a display panel of the type comprising a plurality of light emitting elements arranged in matrix on a vertical display surface and means for prevent the sun's rays from directly hitting said elements light emitters beyond a given minimum incidence in a vertical plane, while allowing an observer to see the image formed by said light emitting elements at an angle less than a given maximum viewing angle.
- This display panel is characterized by the fact that said means consist of a mask placed in front of the surface display and remote from the latter, said mask comprising a vertical wall parallel to the display surface, which has a plurality of openings each arranged opposite an element light emitter, said openings being dimensioned and positioned in relation to the light emitting elements of such so that the light emitted by them is visible by a observer who looks at said panel from an observation angle less than the maximum viewing angle given, and further comprising a plurality of fins directed towards the display surface and intended to at least partially intercept the sun's rays passing through them openings, so that the light-emitting elements are not struck by the sun's rays at an angle of incidence greater than the minimum angle of incidence.
- the vertical wall of the mask intercepts most of the solar radiation hitting the panel, and the fins also intercept most of the radiation solar which passes through the openings. Only a very small portion of solar radiation strikes the display surface between light emitting elements for medium or strong incidences.
- the free ends of the fins are distant from the surface display. This arrangement significantly improves the possible forced air circulation which takes place in the chimney separating the display surface and the fins and in the chimney separating the mask and the transparent protective wall forming the front face of the sign. In any event, the accumulation of calories takes place in mask and does not interfere with the normal functioning of light emitting elements.
- the openings have a square section or rectangular and the fins extend from the lower areas of the openings to the display surface at an angle at least equal to the maximum viewing angle given.
- the mask is produced by cutting and folding of a sheet metal plate.
- Figure 1 shows a known message display panel 1 variable, which has a plurality of elements 2 light emitters arranged in a matrix, i.e. in rows and columns, on a surface display 3 which can be for example the visible front face of a support 4 on which the elements 2 light emitters are mounted.
- This display panel 1 is intended to be used outdoors, for example on a road, in order to provide users of the route of variable information messages made up of characters alphanumeric or graphic elements.
- variable information to display is obtained by the emission of light from elements 2 emitters of light selected by a known type of control system, and not shown in the drawing.
- a visor 5 is associated with each element 2 light emitter. This visor 5 extends towards the front of the panel 1 and is fixed to the support 4 immediately above the corresponding element 2.
- Reference 6 represents a transparent protective plate forming the front face of the display panel 1 and located at a distance from the ends 7 of the visors 5.
- the length L of the visors 5 is a function of the dimension of the elements 2 light emitters. If these have a diameter of 10mm, the length L is at least 57mm, so that the spokes which have an incidence of more than 10 ° cannot strike elements directly 2.
- each element 2 emitting light is thus subjected to a strong heating, the visors 5 fixed to the support 4 forming thermal bridges.
- the object of the present invention is to ensure that these areas have less sun for surface layouts similar displays.
- FIG. 2 shows an embodiment of the invention.
- the display panel 11 according to the invention comprises a plurality 2 light emitting elements arranged in a matrix on a surface vertical display 3 which can be the visible front face of a support 4 said elements 2.
- a transparent plate 6 On the front of the panel 11, there is also provided a transparent plate 6 forming the vertical front face of the panel display 1.
- a mask 12 consisting of a sheet which has a plurality openings 13 of rectangular or square shape, each facing a light emitting element 2, and a plurality of fins 14, each directed from the lower edge 15 of an opening 13 towards the region 16 of the display surface 3 located immediately below of the light emitting element 2 corresponding to said opening 13.
- each opening 13 is located in a horizontal plane 18 tangent to the upper edge of an element 2 emitting light.
- the mask 12 is placed at least at a distance L from the display surface 3, such as solar rays 8 having an incidence greater than the minimum incidence given (for example 10 °, and passing through a given opening 13, cannot strike the element directly 2 light emitter located opposite said opening 13.
- This distance L is a function of the dimension of the elements 2, and is at least equal to 57mm, if elements 2 have, for example, a dimension of 10mm.
- the height and width of the openings 13 is calculated as a function angles A maximum of observation by an observer, in a plane vertical and horizontal. This maximum angle A is for example 10 ° below from the horizon. With the previous data, the height of a opening 13 is thus at least 20mm, and the fins 14 are inclined from the horizontal by an angle of 10 °.
- the vertical wall 19 of the mask 12 intercepts the three-quarters of the sun's rays 8 striking the mask 12.
- the mask 12 is produced from a flat sheet 20 in which makes slots U-shaped to make the openings 13 and folds the areas delimited by these slots to produce the fins 14.
- each fin 14 intercepts much of the solar radiation passing through the opening 13 immediately adjacent, in order to protect the element 2 light emitter located below.
- the fins 14 having a length of about 2cm, we see that they intercept all the solar rays 8 passing through the openings 13, when the incidence of these rays is greater than an angle of intermediate incidence M of approximately 45 °.
- These additional fins can extend to from a second sheet 21 cut and folded like sheet 20 constituting the mask 12 described above, but with slots in form I, these two sheets then being judiciously juxtaposed in such a way so that their openings are in correspondence.
- a fan 25 is arranged in the lower part of the panel 11.
- the support 4, the mask 12 and the transparent protection plate 6 are obviously mounted in a frame not shown in the drawings.
