Definitions
- the invention relates to a window glass fixing and sealing arrangement, comprising a fixing channel which is sized to embrace the periphery of a window glass, the outside of one side wall of the channel carrying clip means extending away from the channel for clippingly engaging mounting means extending around the window opening in which the window glass is to be mounted, and sealing means providing a seal between the window glass and the mounting means.
- Such a window glass fixing and sealing arrangement is known from FR-A-1 394 484.
- the material forming the arrangement is of a flexible nature and the clip means comprises a lip extending along the length of the fixing arrangement.
- the lip In order to fit the arrangement to the mounting means around the window opening, it is necessary for the lip to engage the mounting means along the whole length of the arrangement. This is difficult to achieve in practice.
- the invention aims to overcome this problem.
- the arrangement of the type disclosed in FR-A-1 394 484 is characterised in that the fixing channel is in the form of a length of stiff material shaped to match the shape and length of the periphery of the window glass with its two free ends adjacent to each other, the material being sufficiently longitudinally bendable to enable the channel to be temporarily opened out towards a rectilinear form and then allowed to snap back into its previous shape and into gripping engagement with the periphery of the window glass, and in that the clip means comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced-apart clips.
- the fixing channel can be pre-formed, such as by moulding, to match the shape of the window glass, including (for example) sharp or acute corners, but the process for manufacturing the fixing channel does not involve use of or handling of the glass.
- the fixing channel is fixed onto the periphery of the window glass simply by opening it out towards a rectilinear form so as to enable it to be snapped over the periphery of the window glass.
- the window glass fixing and sealing arrangement to be described in detail below is, in this example, for fixing a triangular-shaped window glass into position in a window opening in a motor vehicle body.
- modified forms of the fixing and sealing arrangement may be used for fixing window glass to window openings of other shapes.
- the window glass fixing and sealing arrangement 10 is produced by any suitable method but probably by moulding of flexible material (for example, an elastomer or plastics material).
- the arrangement is generally channel-shaped in cross-section as shown in Figure 2, providing a glass-receiving channel 12.
- One side wall 14 of the channel is extended beyond the base of the channel to provide a lip 16.
- the other side wall 18 of the channel is provided with integrally formed clips 20 which are positioned at intervals along the length of the arrangement 10, as indicated in Figure 1.
- Soft sealing material such as in the form of a bead 22 of soft material, is placed in the base of the channel 12.
- a length of soft sealing material 24 is mounted on the outside of the channel wall 18, such as by being adhesively secured to it.
- the arrangement 10 is produced in a single length but with its ends 10A and 10B disconnected from each other.
- FIG 3 shows the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 of Figure 1 in position around the periphery of the triangular-shaped window glass 30.
- the window glass 30 is located within the channel 12 so as to make contact with the sealing material 22 at the base of the channel.
- the material of the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 is relatively stiff but sufficiently bendable to enable it to be opened out sufficiently to enable the channel to be snapped onto the periphery of the glass which it resiliently grips.
- the initially separate ends 10A and 10B of the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 are (see Fig. 1) brought together when the arrangement 10 is mounted on the window glass, as shown in Figure 3, and may be adhesively secured to each other or may be arranged to interlock mechanically. The whole assembly process can be carried out very speedily.
- the window glass 30 with the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 mounted on it is then easily placed into position in the window opening of the vehicle body, as shown in Figure 4.
- the arrangement 10 is pushed into place in the window opening so that the heads 32 of the clips 20 engage on the inside of the vehicle bodywork 4 adjacent to the window opening.
- the seal 24 becomes compressed between the side wall 18 of the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 and the vehicle bodywork 34.
- the lip 16 of the fixing and sealing arrangement covers over the gap adjacent the bodywork 36.
- the outer channel wall 14 can be arranged to be relatively rigid so as to ensure that the window glass 30 is held securely in position. At the same time, it can be relatively thin so as to reduce a substantially "flush-glass" effect.
- the sealing bead 22 ensures that draughts or moisture cannot enter the vehicle around the peripheral edge of the window glass 30 within the channel 12.
- the seal 24 ensures an effective weather-proof seal between the inside and outside of the vehicle.
- the ends of the seal 24 (corresponding to the ends 10A and 10B of the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 - see Fig. 1) are brought into end-to-end contact and sealed together to ensure a continuous seal around the complete periphery of the glass.
- Figure 5 shows a modification in which the head 32 of each clip 20 has a wing 32A for gripping the bodywork 34 around the window opening and a wing 32B for securing an element 38 of the interior trim of the vehicle.
- the window glass 30 with the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 mounted thereon is first clipped into position in the window opening by means of the clips 20 whose wings 32A engage behind the bodywork 34.
- the trim part 38 is then clipped into position behind the wings 32B of each clip 20.
- the trim part 38 helps to increase the gripping effect of the clips 20.
- Figure 6 shows a further modified arrangement.
- the clips 20, which each have heads 32 similar to those shown in Figure 5 are arranged to engage in holes 40 through the vehicle bodywork 34 adjacent the window opening, instead of engaging the edge of this bodywork portion.
- the heads 32 of the clips may be arranged to be resilient to enable them to be pushed through the holes 40.
- the clips 20 are surrounded by rings 42 of soft sealing material. As shown in Figure 6, these sealing rings 42 ensure that the holes 40 are weather-proof.
- the arrangement shown in Figure 6 includes a sealing strip 44 which is placed around the complete periphery of the window glass 30 and acts directly between the window glass and the bodywork portion 34.
- This sealing strip 44 can be secured on the window glass 30 by adhesive or by direct extrusion.
- the fixing and sealing arrangements described are advantageous in that they can be very easily and quickly mounted on the window glass by a single mounting operation; the complexities required by fixing arrangements which are secured on the window glass by direct moulding or by adhesive are avoided.
- the material of the fixing and sealing arrangement 10 can be coloured if required.
- it can be coloured to match the colour of the vehicle bodywork.
