Definitions
- This invention relates generally to a suppression agent, and more particularly, to a powdery suppression agent for effectively extinguishing a flame front of a developing deflagration.
- the invention is a deflagration suppression agent consisting of a dry powdery material composed of nonflammable particles each providing a surface area capable of rapidly absorbing heat and thereby cooling a deflagration reaction zone, and wherein at least 90% of the particles have a mean diameter of less than 20 microns. Effective suppression of a deflagration is provided by the very small particles which enhance the extinguishing function per unit mass of material.
- 90% of the particles have a mean diameter less than 5 microns. Suppression effectiveness is enhanced further by a reduction in particle size.
- the invention also encompasses a method for the suppression of a deflagration and includes the steps of: determining a deflagration reaction zone; filling a container having a discharge opening with a dry powdery material composed of nonflammable particles, at least 90% of the particles having a mean diameter less than 20 microns; pressuring the container with a gas; disposing the container in a position that directs the discharge opening toward the reaction zone; detecting a flame front of a developing deflagration in the reaction zone; and releasing the dry powdery material and gas through the discharge opening and into the reaction zone. Release of the very small particles into the reaction zone quickly extinguishes the detected flame front to terminate a developing deflagration.
- the suppression agents are used in deflagration suppression systems employing high rate discharge (HRD) extinguishers.
- HRD high rate discharge
- extinguishers include highly directional discharge openings closed either by quick acting valves or explosively activated frangible closures.
- the extinguishers are filled with the dry powdery agent and then pressurized with a suitable gas such as nitrogen or gases such as carbon dioxide or tryfloromethane which can themselves contribute to enhanced suppression efficiency.
- the extinguisher After being charged with a dry powdery suppression agent and pressurized gas, the extinguisher is mounted in a position that directs it's discharge opening toward a previously determined deflagration reaction zone. Typically such zones are located in enclosures that process materials capable of providing mixtures that can support a deflagration.
- the deflagration reaction zone usually will be within a few feet of the extinguisher discharge opening so as to render the relatively low density and "throw" capability of the VSP agent inconsequential.
- the extinguisher Upon detection of a flame front of a developing deflagration by a suitable detector, the extinguisher is activated to release the dry powdery agent and gas through the discharge opening and into the reaction zone wherein the VSPs rapidly absorb heat to cool the reaction zone to a temperature below that required to support the propagation of a flame front and resulting in suppression.
- Suitable deflagration suppression systems for use with the VSP agents of the invention are disclosed, for example, in U.S. Patent No. 4,487,266 and U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 06/344,531.
