Description

The invention relates to a web-shaped recording material according to claim 1.

When transmitting, for example, long-distance copies via the public telephone network by the so-called fax method, the thermal recording method is used to an ever greater extent for the reproduction of the received long-distance copies. For this purpose, a recording material called thermal paper is used, which consists of a support with a coating of a thin, heat-sensitive layer. This layer contains two components that react with each other when exposed to heat. Heat-sensitive recording materials of the type mentioned with a heat-sensitive recording layer applied to the surface of a carrier material have long been known, for example, for use in thermal fast printers. Paper, and in some cases also plastic film or composite, is usually used as the carrier material for receiving the heat-sensitive recording layer. A particularly important criterion for thermosensitive paper is high surface smoothness. This is produced mechanically, for example, by leading a paper that has been moistened to a certain extent through calendering calenders and thereby smoothing the surface to a high level. The paper between the rollers is satinized under pneumatically or hydraulically generated high pressure.

In order to achieve a sufficient contrast between the recording layer and the color (blackening) developed during recording, the recording layer is generally made pure white. The base material, preferably a coating base paper, made from high-quality cellulose, is usually of a neutral white color. For this reason, quality characterization, for example, is neither possible for the manufacturer nor for the user, or cannot be carried out in a really satisfactory manner.

From EP O 203 499 A2 a method and a device for applying a marking to a thermosensitive web material is known and is referred to as a "pseudo watermark". The method consists in that heat is applied to part of the thermosensitive surface of the paper, and the paper is thereby "semi-translucent", that is to say semi-translucent. A polyethylene polymer is proposed as the heat-sensitive material. In order to apply the required heat, the paper is placed discontinuously on an embossing stick or plate and, in the process, applied with a contact pressure of a predetermined force. The known method disadvantageously leads to a considerable expenditure of time in production, as a result of which the production costs are considerably burdened. In addition, it is very difficult to coordinate the exposure time and the exposure temperature as well as the exposure pressure in such a way and to integrate them into the production process that, given other operating parameters such as the thickness and moisture of the web material, a predetermined color shade of the pseudo-watermark is not exceeded or undershot.

The invention has for its object to incorporate a recognizable sign for quality characterization on thermal paper, which avoids the aforementioned difficulties and disadvantages and, if suitable for a quick, inexpensive and safe production, results in a clearly recognizable quality characterization sign without the optical contrasts of the thermal writing to be applied affect.

To achieve the above-mentioned object, the invention proposes in the case of a web-shaped carrier material of the type mentioned at the outset that at least one watermark is formed in the carrier material.
A watermark is understood to mean a sign introduced by a structural change in a web-like material such as paper, which is visible when viewed in transmitted light. Such watermarks are created during the production of the web-shaped material, for example on the wire of the paper machine, by pressing a relief or hollow shape into the wet nonwoven fabric. A high surface smoothness normally precludes the incorporation of a visible watermark, particularly in the case of comparatively thin or lightweight carrier material.
It was therefore surprising that, contrary to expectation and also with regard to the coating that followed the production of the web-shaped carrier material, a watermark produced in it was clearly recognizable for quality characterization when viewed in the translucent light.
Because the production of the watermark in the carrier material is possible with the continuous economical production of the same by known methods without higher costs, different types of thermal paper according to the invention can now be equipped with the identity mark in the form of a watermark.

This gives the user the advantage of being able to recognize different qualities of such thermal paper and, as is customary in the economy, to select the price and performance of the respective thermal paper in a targeted manner. With the invention, a heat-sensitive recording material according to claim 1 is specified for the first time, the support of which consists of a paper with watermarks. The watermark incorporated into the backing paper can be given any shape in the design, for example simple lines, geometric shapes, names or symbols that characterize quality.
The water sifting can be incorporated with the known technologies on the paper machine screen, for example with the help of an egoutteu rs, a molette or as an artificial watermark in the form of an embossing.
Further expedient training courses are provided in accordance with the subclaims.

In the drawing, an embodiment is shown, which shows the subject matter of the invention purely schematically. The figure shows a web-shaped carrier material (1) for a thermosensitive recording layer with a surface of high smoothness or extremely low roughness, which has a coating with colorless reactants such as dye precursors which cause a color change reaction under the action of heat. At least one watermark (2) is formed in the carrier material (1). It can be a character that is suitable as a recognition index, for example with the first letters of a company (2a), but it can also be a pure symbol character (2b). The carrier material (1) is a machine-smoothed printing paper with a well-closed surface. It has a mass per unit area of 40-250 g per m 2 , preferably 50-150 g / m 2 . The paper may occasionally be of high whiteness or of comparatively less Be white and have a coloration that only slightly affects the shining through of light. Such a web-shaped carrier material (1) is usually made from bleached, semi-bleached or unbleached cellulose. But it can also be made from waste paper. The sheet-like carrier material (1) preferably has a surface smoothness which is 50-250 s in accordance with DIN 53 107 Gl (Bekk) A. The color of the backing paper can be chosen regardless of the watermark. It is preferably neutral pure white, but can also have a lower whiteness when using waste paper. However, carrier papers in the sense of the invention can also be used which are made from pulp containing wood pulp, semi-bleached or unbleached cellulose.
