  • the devices may have different transition times for turning on when the gate terminals are triggered. This can result in excessive voltages across the anode/cathode junction of the slower devices. For example, in Fig. 1, if devices 46a and 46b begin to conduct current at an appreciably faster rate than device 46c, excessive anode/cathode voltages may appear across the slower device 46c. To reduce this effect, we have provided snubber circuits 200 for each switching device 46. Each snubber circuit 200 operates in substantially the same manner, therefore, only one will be described.
  • Each snubber circuit 200 includes a capacitor 202, a diode 204, and a gate return resistor 206. A series string of static balancing resistors 208 are also provided.
  • the snubber capacitor 202 is connected between the diode 204 and the corresponding gate terminal 48 of the switching device 46. For purposes of explaining operation of the snubber circuits 200, assume that switching device 46a and 46b begin to turn on before device 46c. Without the snubber circuits, voltage would rapidly build across the anode/cathode junction of the slower device.
  • the static balancing resistor 208 in each snubber circuit serves at least two purposes. First, these resistors operate in a conventional manner to provide static balance across the switching devices so that no single device 46 sees an excessive anode/cathode potential while the main capacitor 38 is charging. The balancing resistors 208 also serve to discharge the snubber capacitors after each spark discharge period of the exciter 10.
  • the snubber circuit 200 is particularly useful when the switching device is a GTO type thyristor. This is because these devices are particularly susceptible to excess anode/cathode voltages due to slower and less predictable turn on time delays from the time that the gate current is applied to the time that the device operates in the thyristor region.
  • the devices exhibit fairly consistent and predictable turn on delays that are short enough that additional drive to the gate terminals is not needed. Therefore, a snubber circuit for conventional SCR devices can be used that has the snubber capacitor connected between the snubber diode and the cathode of the SCR. This snubber design simply shunts any charge build up due to devices 46 turning on at different rates around the slower devices.
  • each snubber circuit 200 includes a diode 210 connected between the gate terminal 48 and the corresponding pulse transformer 50. This diode is provided to block current from the snubber capacitor 202 from being shunted away from the gate terminal 48 due to the low impedance of the pulse transformer secondary winding. This diode is not needed in an SCR snubber circuit because the latter returns the snubber capacitor current to the SCR cathode, not the gate terminal.
  • a high tension discharge circuit In some engine designs, the plug 12 requires a high voltage level to generate the spark across the plug electrodes. This voltage may be on the order of 15 kV or higher. Because solid-state switches cannot withstand such high voltages, a voltage step-up transformer is used in the output circuit 72. The use of voltage step-up transformers for high tension exciters has been well known since the 1960s.
  • a typical design includes a transformer T3 having a primary winding connected in series with the main capacitor 38 (not shown in Fig. 3A) and an excitation capacitor 90. The transformer T3 secondary 92 is connected in series with the plug 12.
  • the switching devices 46a-d When the switching devices 46a-d are triggered on, discharge current from the capacitor 38 initially flows through the primary of T3 until the capacitor 90 charges. During this time a high voltage spike is induced in the secondary 92 that appears across the plug 12 to create a spark. After the capacitor 90 charges, the primary of T3 no longer conducts current, and the capacitor 38 completes discharge through the secondary 92 and the current multiplier.
  • the step-up transformer T3 can be used in parallel with the current multiplier 76 of the present invention to first provide high voltage at low current to the plug 12 in order to initiate the spark and then provide low voltage and high current to the plug 12.
  • Fig. 3B shows yet another variation in which the current multiplier 76 and voltage step-up transformer can be realized using a single transformer T4.
  • discharge current from the capacitor 38 initially flows through the primary 94 and excitation capacitor 96. This creates a high voltage spike in the center tapped secondary winding 98 and a high current spike in the other secondary winding 100. After the capacitor 96 charges, the main capacitor 38 completes its discharge through the secondaries 98,100.

Claims (19)

  1. Erreger für eine Zündvorrichtung, umfassend eine Ladeschaltung (20), einen Speicherkondensator (38), der zum Laden durch die Ladeschaltung (20) angeschlossen ist, eine Entladeschaltung (22), die zum Entladen des Speicherkondensators (38) angeschlossen ist und an eine Zündkerze (12) angeschlossen werden kann, damit die Zündkerze (12) als Reaktion auf das Entladen des Kondensators (38) Funken erzeugt, wobei die Ladeschaltung (20) an eine Wechselstromquelle (28) zum ständigen Zuführen von Leistung zu der Ladeschaltung (20), um einen Ladestrom zum Laden des Speicherkondensators (38) zu erzeugen, angeschlossen werden kann, wobei die Entladeschaltung (22) ein an den Speicherkondensator (38) angeschlossenes Halbleiterschaltbauelement (46) zum Verbinden des Speicherkondensators (38) mit der Zündkerze (12) enthält, und eine Triggerschaltung (52) zum Auslösen des Schaltbauelements (46), dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Ladeschaltung eine Regelschaltung (32a, 32b) zum Regeln des Ladestroms, um den Speicherkondensator (38) zwischen Funken mit einer allgemein konstanten Rate zu laden, enthält und daß die Triggerschaltung (52) als Reaktion auf die Ladung auf dem Speicherkondensator (38) das Schaltbauelement (46) auslöst, wobei die Ladeschaltung (20) und die Triggerschaltung (52) dahingehend arbeiten, eine allgemein konstante Funkenrate aufrechtzuerhalten.
  2. Erreger nach Anspruch 1, gekennzeichnet durch einen zwischen der Ladeschaltung (20) und dem Speicherkondensator (38) angeschlossenen Halbwellengleichrichter (42, 44), so daß abwechselnde Halbperioden des Ladestroms gesperrt werden, wodurch nach der Entladung für das Schaltbauelement (46) eine Kommutierungsdauer bereitgestellt wird.
  3. Erreger nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Schaltbauelement (46) ein Thyristor, ein GTO oder SCR ist.
  4. Erreger nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, gekennzeichnet durch einen an das Schaltbauelement (46) angeschlossenen Stromvervielfacher (76) zur Verbindung mit der Zündkerze (12), um beim Entladen des Speicherkondensators (38) den Strom durch die Zündkerze (12) wesentlich zu erhöhen.
  5. Erreger nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Stromvervielfacher (76) strukturell in der Nähe der Zündkerze (12) positioniert ist, um während des Entladens des Kondensators (38) den Leistungsverlust zu verringern.
  6. Erreger nach Anspruch 4 oder 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Stromvervielfacher (76) einen Spartransformator (T2) mit einer ersten, zwischen dem Schaltbauelement (46) und der Zündkerze (12) in Reihe liegenden Wicklung und einer zweiten, mit der Zündkerze (12) verbundenen Windung aufweist, so daß der beim Entladen an die Zündkerze (12) angelegte Strom wesentlich größer ist als der von dem Kondensator (38) entladene Strom.
  7. Erreger nach Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Stromvervielfacher (76) mit einer Spannungsaufwärtstransformierungsschaltung (T3, 90) verbunden ist.
  8. Erreger nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Stromvervielfacher (76) und die Spannungsaufwärtstransformierungsschaltung einen Einkerntransformator mit einer ersten, mit dem Schaltbauelement (46) und dem Kondensator (38) in Reihe liegenden Wicklung, einer zweiten, an die Zündkerze (12) angeschlossenen Wicklung (92), um vor dem Zünden eines Lichtbogens die an der Zündkerze anliegende Spannung wesentlich zu erhöhen, und einer dritten, an die Zündkerze angeschlossenen Wicklung, um nach dem Zünden eines Lichtbogens den Strom zu der Zündkerze wesentlich zu erhöhen.
  9. Erreger nach Anspruch 8, gekennzeichnet durch eine zwischen der Sekundärwicklung und der Zündkerze in Reihe geschaltete Diode.
  10. Erreger nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Triggerschaltung (52) einen Komparator (54) zum Vergleichen der Kondensatorspannung mit einer Bezugsspannung umfaßt, wobei der Komparator als Reaktion auf eine vorbestimmte Beziehung zwischen der Kondensatorspannung und der Bezugsspannung ein Triggersignal erzeugt.
  11. Erreger nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Regelschaltung (32a, 32b) induktive Mittel umfaßt.
  12. Erreger nach Anspruch 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Ladeschaltung (20) einen Transformator (T1) mit einer Primärwicklung (34), die so angeschlossen ist, daß sie von der Stromquelle (28) durch die induktiven Mittel (32a, 32b) bestromt wird, und einer an den Speicherkondensator (38) angeschlossenen Sekundärwicklung (36) umfaßt.
  13. Erreger nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Schaltbauelement mehrere in Reihe geschaltete Halbleiterschalter (46) umfaßt, und gekennzeichnet durch eine an jeden dieser Schalter (46) angeschlossene Ventilbeschaltung (200), wobei jede Ventilbeschaltung (200) einen über eine Diode (204) zwischen ein Gate und eine Anode des jeweiligen Schalters (46) geschalteten Kondensator (202) umfaßt.
  14. Erreger nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, gekennzeichnet durch ein Gleichrichtermittel (150) parallel zu dem Speicherkondensator (38), um Sperrströme und Sperrspannungen zu verhindern.
  15. Erreger nach Anspruch 14, gekennzeichnet durch eine zweite Ladeschaltung (506), einen zweiten Kondensator (510), der zum Laden durch die zweite Ladeschaltung (506) angeschlossenen ist, und ein parallel zu dem zweiten Kondensator (510) angeschlossenes zweites Gleichrichtermittel (532), um Sperrströme und Sperrspannungen an dem zweiten Kondensator (510) zu verhindern.
  16. Erreger nach Anspruch 14 oder 15, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Gleichrichtermittel (150, 532) Sperrströme verhindert, indem es eine Resonanz zwischen dem oder dem jeweiligen Kondensator (38, 510) und der damit verbundenen Streuinduktivität verhindert, wobei die Streuinduktivität in erster Linie von der Induktivität des internen Leitungsstücks oder der Induktivität des Kondensators (38, 510) herrührt.
  17. Verfahren zur Erzeugung von Funken durch eine Zündkerze (12), mit den folgenden Schritten: wiederholtes Erzeugen eines halbwellengleichgerichteten Ladestroms von einer Wechselstromquelle (28), wobei die Wechselstromquelle (28) zur Erzeugung des Ladestroms ständig Leistung liefert, wiederholtes Laden eines Ladekondensators (38) mit dem Ladestrom von einer Stromquelle (28), wiederholtes Auslösen eines Schaltbauelements (46) in einer Entladeschaltung (22), um den Speicherkondensator (38) durch die Zündkerze (12) zur Erzeugung der Funken zu entladen, und Abschalten des Schaltbauelements (46) während einer nichtladenden Halbperiode des Ladestroms nach dem Entladen des Speicherkondensators (38), dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Zündkerze (12) eine Zündkerze (12) eines Motors ist, und gekennzeichnet durch den Schritt des Regelns des Ladestroms derart, daß der Ladestrom den Speicherkondensator (38) zwischen Funken mit einer allgemein konstanten Rate lädt, daß der Auslöseschritt die Schritte umfaßt, die Ladung des Speicherkondensators (38) zu erfassen und als Reaktion auf die erfaßte Ladung das Schaltbauelement (46) auszulösen, und daß der Ladeschritt und der Auslöseschritt dahingehend arbeiten, eine allgemein konstante Funkenrate aufrechtzuerhalten.
  18. Verfahren nach Anspruch 17, gekennzeichnet durch den Schritt, den während der Entladung des Kondensators (38) an die Zündkerze (12) gelieferten Strom unter Verwendung eines Stromvervielfachers (76) wesentlich zu erhöhen.
  19. Verfahren nach Anspruch 18, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Schritt, den an die Zündkerze (12) gelieferten Strom wesentlich zu erhöhen, auf einen Schritt folgt, die während des Entladens des Kondensators (38) an die Zündkerze (12) angelegte Spannung wesentlich zu erhöhen.
