Description

The invention relates to female electrical contact terminals intended to convey a high current intensity. It finds a particularly important application in the field of electrical connectors subjected, during their use, to intense vibrations.

We already know (FR-A-2 596 210) female electrical contact terminals whose fingers delimit at rest an input section greater than that of the male contact and are folded over this contact by a slide integral with a movable fraction of the insulation and pushed back by a spring to the position where it presses the fingers against the male terminal.

This constitution has advantages; in particular it reduces the insertion force necessary to couple the terminals. In return, it has the disadvantage of requiring moving parts with respect to each other and of being sensitive to intense vibrations.

There is also known (FR-A-2 031 260) a female electrical contact terminal having a rear shaft for connection to an electrical conductor and an annular front part open towards the front, intended to receive a male terminal and split by slots axial, in blades or springs and also having a sleeve integral with the root of the fingers and surrounding the fingers. The role of this sleeve is to subject the contact terminals to an inwardly directed radial tension, practically reaching the point of elastic limit.

The present invention aims in particular to provide a terminal of simple constitution, capable of maintaining a good quality electrical connection under vibration, and this without requiring moving parts to achieve forced support.

Dans ce but l'invention propose une borne du type ci-dessus défini, conforme à la revendication 1.For this purpose, the invention proposes a terminal of the type defined above, in accordance with claim 1.

In the free state, the bulges of the fingers define an opening of smaller diameter than that of the male terminal. Provided that at least the annular part is made of a material having sufficient elastic characteristics, the contact pressure reduces the ohmic resistance between the terminals. The terminal bulges are advantageously provided to define, when the female terminal and the male terminal are fully coupled, a cylindrical bearing surface, increasing the surface area for transmitting electric current. In practice, it will generally be necessary to give this cylindrical part a length between one third and half the length of the fingers.

Under these conditions, the electrical exchange surface remains high even in the event of transverse vibrations which tend to partially detach the fingers from the male terminal. The contact force can also be high enough for the male terminal to remain integral with the bulges, even under intense longitudinal vibrations.

It should also be noted that each finger constitutes an embedded beam, supported by its free end, which considerably limits the possible amplitudes of vibration and leads to high resonance frequencies, unlikely to be encountered in normal operation.

In an advantageous embodiment, the female terminal is made up of two parts joined to each other, made of metallic materials having different mechanical properties. The barrel is then made of a plastically deformable material, so as to facilitate its crimping with the aid of pliers. The active annular front part can be made by turning so as to be present in the form of an annular base which can be plugged into an extension of reduced diameter of the barrel and of an active part constituted by the fingers, in one piece with the base.

The invention also provides an electrical connector comprising a half-connector having a shell containing an insulator crossed by male contacts, each retained by imprisonment of a groove which it presents in an insulating plate and a half-connector having a securable shell of the shell of the other half-connector, also containing an insulator, which is crossed by female contact terminals of the type defined above, each of the male contacts being cylindrical in its current part and terminated at the front by a chamfer facilitating insertion.

The invention will be better understood on reading the following description of a particular embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example. The description refers to the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a view of the female terminal, in longitudinal section along line II of FIG. 2,
  • FIG. 2 is a left view of FIG. 1,
  • FIG. 3 is a view in elevation and in partial section, intended to show a female terminal according to the invention and a male terminal in the state in which they are at the start of the insertion,
  • FIG. 4 is a partial view in longitudinal half-section showing a connector according to a particular embodiment of the invention, incorporating terminals of the type shown in FIGS. 1 to 3.

The female contact terminal 10 shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 is intended to receive a male terminal 12 having a cylindrical active part, terminated by an input chamfer in the female terminal.

Le fût 14 présente à l'avant un prolongement de diamètre réduit, limité par un épaulement 20.The female terminal 10 can be viewed as comprising a rear shaft 14 for connection with a conductor insulated electric 16 and an active front part 18. In the embodiment shown, these two parts are made of different materials and then assembled permanently. The barrel 14 may in particular be made of a material allowing it to be crimped onto the conductor 16 by pinching in two orthogonal directions. It can in particular be a free-cutting brass. The barrel 14 has at the front an extension of reduced diameter, limited by a shoulder 20.

The front active part 18 is made of a material having on the contrary a high elasticity, at the same time as a good electrical conductivity. It is for example made of beryllium bronze. It comprises an annular base 22 intended to be fixed permanently, for example by fitting, on the extension of the barrel. Beyond the base, the front part can be considered as a socket, split by slots 24 regularly distributed in several fingers. In practice, the number of fingers will be between 12 and 18. A number of 16 will generally be satisfactory. Before fractionation by the slots 24, the end part of the front part is machined so as to have an intermediate thin section and an internal end bulge. Fingers 26 are thus obtained having a thin section, connected to the base, and a terminal portion having an internal bulge 27 which has a substantially cylindrical internal surface and a diameter substantially equal to that of the pin of the male terminal 12 when the fingers are straight. Before mounting on the barrel, the fingers are deformed inwards (FIG. 1) so as to delimit an inlet passage with a diameter smaller than that of pin 12.

On the active front part is mounted a continuous tube 28, which can for example be fitted on the common root of the fingers 26. The tube 28 is intended to serve as a support for the swollen fraction of the arms when the latter are deformed by engagement protect the active part.

Ce connecteur peut être considéré comme constitué d'un demi-connecteur mâle et d'un demi-connecteur femelle.FIG. 4 shows, by way of example, a connector capable of using a female terminal of the kind shown in FIGS. 1 to 3. This connector can be considered to consist of a male half-connector and a half-connector female.

The female half-connector comprises a shell 32 made up of several assembled parts, trapping an insulator crossed by female contacts 10. To retain these female terminals, the insulator is divided into a front insulator 34 crossed by the active part of the terminals 10, a rear insulator 36 and an intermediate washer 38 inserted in a groove in each cut terminal, on the base of the active part and at the front of the barrel. A flexible grommet 40 is provided to rest on the conductors and ensure sealing.

The male half-connector also comprises a shell 42 made of several assembled parts. The shell contains an insulator which can have a constitution similar to that of the insulator of the female half-connector, so as to retain the male terminals 12, provided with a groove. The male half-connector can also comprise, in a conventional manner, a front plate 44 through which the pins pass.

Finally, the half-connectors are provided with cooperating means allowing them to be plugged in the appropriate orientation, and then to be joined. In the case shown in FIG. 4, one of the half-connectors comprises at least one rib 46 intended to engage in a groove of the other half-connector for the purpose of polarization. The shell of one of the half-connectors carries a ring 48 intended to be screwed onto a thread of the shell of the other half-connector.

The coupling of the half-connectors is carried out in a conventional manner. When the pin of a male terminal lands on the fingers of a female terminal, its terminal chamfer exerts on the rounded end of the bulges 27 a force which tends to move them away from the axis. The arms then gradually deform, as the introduction takes place, first taking the shape indicated schematically in Figure 3, the thin sections taking an "S" shape, while the bulges remain oblique by compared to the protective tube 28. As the spindle is inserted, the fingers straighten up to finally arrive in the position shown in Figure 4. A slight clearance may be provided on the active part immediately behind the bulge of fingers, so as to allow to remain a clearance j which allows the internal surface of the bulge to be better applied to the spindle.

It can be seen that each finger is thus supported on the pin by an entire surface, rather than along only a circular line, which on the one hand reduces the contact resistance and on the other hand makes it possible to maintain an electrical connection satisfactory even in case of intense vibrations.
