Definitions
- the present invention relates to an ultra-thin watch movement with manual or automatic winding, comprising at least one barrel and all the mobiles of which are mounted in cantilever on a single plate and each using a single ball bearing.
- the object of the present invention is to eliminate this friction.
- the watch movement according to the invention is characterized in that the ratchet is in the form of a drum surrounding the barrel drum and pivoted by its periphery using at least three rollers each pivoted on a ball bearing and that the barrel is pivoted in the ratchet.
- This construction which is totally different from the conventional construction of barrels, makes it possible to eliminate the friction which has been mentioned above, since the barrel drum is free to move under the effect of the torsion described above.
- the ratchet being only a passive, immobile member, the friction that it can meet at the level of its pivoting rollers play only a secondary role. Thanks to the ball bearing, they are however very low and are negligible in the case of an automatic oscillating mass execution.
- the barrel is preferably pivoted in the ratchet by means of a ball bearing mounted in a hub of the ratchet.
- the movement comprises, on and in a single plate 1, two identical barrels 2 and 3 rotating in opposite directions and attacking a common reference 4 meshing with the center pinion 5.
- the barrel 2 is associated with the gear train comprising successively a pinion of finishing 6, the large average 7, the small average 8, the second wheel 2 and the escape wheel 10 to reach the balance 11.
- the finishing pinion 6 meshes with the pinion 12 of the large medium 7. We can still distinguish the timer 13 and the mobile 14 of the manual winding train.
- the two barrels are produced in an identical manner and it will be sufficient to describe the construction of the barrel 3.
- the drum of the barrel 3 is provided with a pin 22 driven into the inner cage of a ball bearing 23 whose outer cage is driven into the hub 24 of a ratchet 25 in the form of a drum, that is to say provided with a crown 26 surrounding the barrel drum.
- the ratchet 25 has externally a peripheral groove 27 in which engage the slices of rollers pivoted on the plate by means of a ball bearing and ensuring the pivoting of the ratchet 25 by its periphery.
- Such rollers are shown in detail in patent CH 610 178. They are shown schematically in Figure 1 at 28, 29, 30, 31, 32. Each of the ratchets 25 and 33 is therefore pivoted by means of three rollers, the roller 30 being common to the two ratchets.
- the hub 24 of the ratchet therefore constitutes the bung of the barrel and it is provided with a hook 34 for the barrel spring.
- the barrel drums 2 and 3 are therefore pivoted only by their center in a ball bearing reducing friction to a minimum.
- the new barrel design is of course applicable to a movement comprising only one barrel.

Description
The present invention relates to an ultra-thin watch movement with manual or automatic winding, comprising at least one barrel and all the mobiles of which are mounted in cantilever on a single plate and each using a single ball bearing.
The use of miniature ball bearings made it possible to pivot the mobiles with a cantilever movement on a single plate and thus to build extra-flat movements whose thickness, in their version with manual winding, does not not exceed 1.5 mm. Such a construction is described in patent CH 610 178. In this movement, the barrel is pivoted, in the thickness of the movement, by its periphery using three rollers each pivoted on a miniature ball bearing and the ratchet is pivoted on the barrel axis. We tried to further reduce the thickness of the movement. However, such a reduction is inevitably accompanied by a reduction in the width of the mainspring housed in the barrel, that is to say a reduction in the energy available when the spring is armed, that is, a decrease in the power reserve of the watch. It is certainly possible to compensate for this reduction in energy by using two barrels as taught in patent CH 375 289, but with such small dimensions of motor spring, the importance of friction and energy losses which the result is growing.
However, if we consider the design of the barrel according to the prior art, we see that the barrel is subjected to two opposite torsional moments, one due to the spring and the other to the ratchet. These torsional moments are not in the same plane, which inevitably has the effect of generating a torsion in a perpendicular plane or oblique to the plane of the movement plate due to the overhang. The drum of the barrel cannot however move freely relative to its ideal axis because of the rollers which surround it and support it, which generates friction which it is almost impossible to remove in such a pivoting.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate this friction.
The watch movement according to the invention is characterized in that the ratchet is in the form of a drum surrounding the barrel drum and pivoted by its periphery using at least three rollers each pivoted on a ball bearing and that the barrel is pivoted in the ratchet.
This construction, which is totally different from the conventional construction of barrels, makes it possible to eliminate the friction which has been mentioned above, since the barrel drum is free to move under the effect of the torsion described above.
The ratchet being only a passive, immobile member, the friction that it can meet at the level of its pivoting rollers play only a secondary role. Thanks to the ball bearing, they are however very low and are negligible in the case of an automatic oscillating mass execution.
In order to keep the friction as low as possible, the barrel is preferably pivoted in the ratchet by means of a ball bearing mounted in a hub of the ratchet.
- FIG. 1 represents a schematic plan view thereof, and
- FIG. 2 represents a sectional view along II-II of FIG. 1.
The movement comprises, on and in a
All the mobiles are cantilevered on the plate by means of
The two barrels are produced in an identical manner and it will be sufficient to describe the construction of the
The
The new barrel design is of course applicable to a movement comprising only one barrel.
The movement described could be equipped with an oscillating weight to make it an automatic movement.
