Definitions

  • the invention relates to an improved door plate assembly for providing surface fittings and for installing different operating devices to a range of different lock cases mortised in a door.
  • the invention also relates to a lock case mortised in a door and a door plate assembly installed on at least one side of the door.
  • mortise locks and lock cases produced to be installed in a suitable cavity formed in a door there being many different shapes, sizes and designs provided for various purposes in many different countries.
  • a door handle will be required to be mounted on the door by means of which a bolt in the lock case can be moved from its protruding locking position into a withdrawn releasing position, to allow the door to be opened.
  • a door is additionally provided with a key function either on both sides or on only one side so that a lock mechanism, for instance a cylinder lock or the like, attached to the lock case and controlling the movements of the bolt can be opened and locked.
  • a turn knob can be provided on the other side of the dooropposite to the lock mechanism, by means of which knob the bolt can be moved without using a key.
  • the door handle is located on a higher level and the lock cylinder with its fittings on a lower level, but these locations can be reversed.
  • a turn knob or a handle On the door of a WC or toilet there is generally a turn knob or a handle on the inside of the door and on the outer side of the door a vacant/engaged indicator (for instance a red-white plate) connected to turn with the turn knob of the handle and on the basis of the position of which indicator one can see from outside the door whether the door is locked or not.
  • a vacant/engaged indicator for instance a red-white plate
  • the lock mechanism can be located in the lock case itself in which case a mere key hole or a key hole provided with a cover flap is all that is required in the door plate.
  • the operational devices and the surface fittings required on a door can be of various kinds according to what properties one desires or requires for the locking or latching function of a door in the circumstances of operation for the door in question.
  • a presumption for providing a range of available functions for a door lock is that the lock case has two operating axes spaced apart from each other in the longitudinal direction of the door for installing different operational devices on either or both sides of the door.
  • the dimensions of the lock cases vary considerably from country to country and, naturally, without international standardisation this is true also with regard to the separation between operating axes.
  • One aim of the invention is to provide a novel door plate assembly based on a lockset plate which will avoid the disadvantages of the prior art arrangements and by means of which the range of different alternative functions required with different door lock cases can be accommodated in an uncomplicated manner.
  • a door plate assembly includes a plate body, which is dimensioned and formed so that it comprises an installation opening for each operating axis to be located at the position thereof when installed, and a set of different plate members for installation in said installation openings and which are provided, according to need, with different guiding means for different alternative operating devices.
  • the plate members to be installed in the plate body in each case are selected according to the lock case and the operating devices to be selected in accordance with the operating conditions required in each situation.
  • a suitable combination of surface fittings can be provided for a desired lock case for each purpose by using one plate body and a pair of suitably formed and dimensioned interchangeable plate members selected from a set of such plate members.
  • a door plate assembly according to the invention makes it possible to implement all the conventional alternative lock functions and the combinations of constructional solutions needed accordingly.
  • the invention also provides good possibilities to utilise different structural materials in the plate members for instance in accordance with different requirements for strength but also with regard to surface coatings or merely matters of appearance.
  • the reference numeral 1 indicates a plate body to be used in connection with a lock case mortised in a door and which includes installation openings 2 and 3 for different plate members 6a-6f.
  • each installation opening 2 and 3 has a step 4 and holes 5 for countersunk fixing screws.
  • holes 5 are arranged in two opposite corners of each opening as is shown in Figure 1.
  • the corners of each plate member 6 include threaded cavities 8(a-f) for fixing screws.
  • the plate members 6 are desirably dimensioned relative to the step 4 so that when installed the front faces of the plate members 6 and the plate body 1 lie in a common plane.
  • the plate members 6 themselves can be of various kinds and a range of different kinds are illustrated in the drawings.
  • the plate members 6a-6d each have a guiding opening 7a-7d, respectively, of which the guiding openings 7a and 7c can be used for installing a door handle and the guiding openings 7b and 7d can be used for installing a lock cylinder in accordance with so-called "DIN-norms".
  • These operating devices can be fixed in any convenient way.
  • a lock cylinder can be fixed by means of screws extending through the door and a door handle can be turnably supported in a guiding opening by using, for instance, a locking ring, a cotter pin fixing, or a retaining screw fixing.
  • the guiding opening 7 in a plate member 6 can be formed and dimensioned in accordance with each separate operating device required for a door lock. These include, in addition to the items referred to above, for instance, a normal turn knob or handle, an opening device for a toilet door and lock cylinders of different designs.
  • the position of a guiding opening 7 in a plate member 6 would be determined by the position of the operating axes in the lock case to be used in conjunction with the plate body 1 so that the operating device is installed correctly at the position of the required operating axis in the lock case.
  • a plate member 6 can be formed without any guiding opening (see Figures 20 and 21).
  • each plate member may comprise a pulling member stationarily fixed thereto (not shown in the drawings).
  • Plate members can be made of a wide range of different materials, e.g. steel, brass or aluminium, and with different coatings and finishes, e.g. polished, chromed, anodised or painted, depending, for instance, on the strength requirements dictated by the circumstances in which the door in question is to be used, but, on the other hand, aesthetic appearance can also be taken account of.
  • a door plate can also be fixed, for instance, so that the plate member 6 is fixed to the plate body 1 at its opposite corners as described above, but the plate body 1 is separately fixed to t he door or t he plate body 1 and the plate member 6 are fixed together with common screws to the door or with throughgoing screws to another door plate installed on the opposite side of the door.
  • holes required for the common fixing of the parts can be arranged to pass through the step 4 in the plate body 1 at the position of the holes 9a-9f in the plate members 6 (not shown in the Figures).
  • the plate body 1 is formed depending on the selected way of fixing and is provided with fixing members in accordance therewith.
  • the length of the plate body is preferably chosen to be applicable for as many conventional door lock situations as possible. In practice this means especially that the installation openings 2 and 3 are large enough to embrace the positions for the operating axes in all lock cases likely to be used therewith so that after installation of the plate members, the operating devices are aligned with the position of the respective operating axis.
  • a door plate assembly according to the invention can be used for most kinds of door lock cases, the range of plate members available being designed to be suitable for all the different operating devices likely to be met in practice. This applies even where the door lock case is provided for instance with more than one bolt or latch.
