Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of current conducting rollers, in particular but not exclusively rollers for continuous electrolysis lines.
- the present invention aims to improve the current conducting rollers described in the document FR-A-2648269.
- FIG. 1 Partially shown in attached FIG. 1 is a current conducting roller of the type described in this document FR-A-2648269.
- Figure 1 attached is in accordance with Figure 3 of document FR-A-2648269.
- the rollers 100 described in document FR-A-2648269 include a central part 110 partially visible in the attached FIG. 1.
- This central part 110 is cylindrical of revolution around the axis 102 of the roller. It constitutes the main active part of the roll involved in electrolysis.
- This central part 110 is generally called “table" of the roller.
- This central part 110 is extended on both sides, at its axial ends, by pins 120 centered on the axis 102.
- Document FR-A-2648269 essentially relates to the structure of these pins 120.
- These pins 120 have a diameter smaller than that of the central part 110. They essentially fulfill a double function: guiding the roller 100 in rotation about the axis 102 on the one hand, and ensuring the supply of current to the roller 100 d 'somewhere else.
- rollers 100 are crossed by an axial channel 130 allowing circulation of cooling water.
- Cooling of the roller must be ensured in particular at the level of the collector zone formed on the pins 120.
- the pins 120 each comprise a steel body 140, of revolution about the axis 102.
- the body 140 is welded, at its axially internal end, at 142, on a sleeve in steel 112 centered on the axis 102 forming the central part 110 of the roller.
- the body 140 is also welded at its axially external end to an attached end piece 180.
- the body 140 of steel is provided with an internal copper hoop 150.
- the internal copper hoop 150 is itself protected by a sheath 160 complementary to the internal surface of the copper hoops 150.
- the sheath 160 is preferably made of stainless steel.
- the protection of each internal copper hoop 150 is completed by two washers 162, 164, arranged transversely to the axis 102.
- the washers 162, 164 respectively cover each of the axial ends of the hoops 150. They are welded at their periphery internal on the sleeve 160 and at their external periphery on the steel body 140.
- the sleeve 160 in combination with the washers 162, 164, prevents corrosion of the internal copper hoops 150.
- the object of the present invention is to improve the conductive rollers described in document FR-A-2648269 and represented in the attached FIG. 1.
- An important object of the present invention is to adapt the current conducting roller to the use of water boxes.
- Another important object of the present invention is to strengthen the rigidity of the current conducting rollers.
- the current conducting roller comprises a central part constituting the main active part of the roller and two pins extending the central part, respectively at each of the ends thereof, each of the pins comprising a steel body provided with an internal copper hoop itself provided with an internal protective sheath and this current conducting roller is characterized in that the internal copper hoop is placed in a blind bore of the steel body and that a compressible seal inserted between the bottom of the blind bore and the corresponding end of the internal copper hoop.
- the compressible seal is capable of radial expansion during compression.
- the steel body is provided with at least one generally radial through bore, axially outside the copper hoop.
- the steel body of each pin is in one piece.
- roller 200 current conductor comprising a central part 210 extended respectively, at its ends, by two pins 220.
- the central part 210 of the roller is formed of a cylindrical steel sleeve 212 of revolution about an axis 202. If necessary, the central part 210 can be provided with a coating 214, for example a copper coating deposited by plating. This coating 214 is however not essential.
- a single pin 220 is partially shown in FIG. 2.
- the second pin provided at the opposite end of the central part 210 may be symmetrical with the latter shown in FIG. 2.
- Each pin 220 preferably comprises, as shown in the appended FIG. 2: a steel body 240, an internal copper hoop 250, a protective sleeve 260, two washers 262, 264, and a compressible seal 270.
- the steel body 240 is centered on the axis 202 of the roller.
- the steel body 240 can be the subject of numerous embodiments. It preferably has a stepped section along its length. Essentially, the stepped section of the steel body 240 is of increasing size from the axial end of the journal 220 towards the central part 210.
- the steel body 240 comprises an axially external part 241, an axially internal part 242 and a transition zone 243.
- the axially external part 241 is formed by a succession of cylindrical portions centered on the axis 202 and of increasing section towards the central part 210.
- the axially internal part 242 has a diameter greater than the axially external part 241.
- the axially internal part 242 has an external radius equal to that of the sleeve 212. This axially internal part 242 is welded to the sleeve 212 of the central part using an annular weld bead 244.
- the transition zone 243 diverges with respect to the axis 202 in approach to the axially internal part 242.
- the axially internal part 242 can also be covered by the coating 214.
- the steel body 240 more precisely the axially external part 241 thereof, is provided with an axial bore passing through 245 of radius R1.
- This bore 245 forms in combination with the sleeve 260 an axial passage through 230, as will be explained later.
- the axially external part 241 of the steel body 240 is further provided with a second blind bore 246 of radius R2 greater than the radius R1 of the above-mentioned through bore 245.
- the second blind bore 246 opens on the axially internal end of the axially external part 241 of the steel body 240. This second bore 246 extends over most of the length of the part 241 of the steel body 240, typically the 75% of the length of this part 241.
- the bottom 247 of the blind bore 246 is directed towards the inside of the roller. For this reason, the bore 246 must of course be produced in the steel body 240 before welding it on the central sleeve 212.
- the axial bore 246 is designed to receive the internal copper hoop 250 as indicated in the document FR-A-2648269.
- the external radius of the internal copper hoop 250 is adapted to the radius R2 of the bore 246.
- the sleeve 260 is preferably made of stainless steel.
- the sheath 260 is preferably assembled by hooping inside the copper hoop 250.
- the sheath 260 is intended to protect the copper hoop 250 from the cooling water circulating in the central channel 230 of the roller and from the chromic acid used, if necessary, for the repair of the roller.
- the stainless steel sheath 260 has a length greater than the copper hoop 250 and emerges axially on each of the ends of the latter.
- a third axial bore 248 having a radius R3 intermediate between the radius R1 of the through bore 245 and the radius R2 of the blind bore 246.
- the radius R3 of this third axial bore 248 is substantially complementary to the external radius of the sleeve 260 of stainless steel.
- the sleeve 260 has an equal internal radius R1 of the bore 245.
- the sleeve 260 does not protrude inside the axial passage 230 and does not disturb the circulation of the cooling water.
- the washer 262 and the washer 264 are preferably made of stainless steel.
- the washer 262 is placed on the axially internal end of the copper hoop 250. To effectively protect the latter, the washer 262 is fixed, by its radially external periphery to the steel body 240 and by its radially internal periphery to the sheath 260 stainless steel.
- the washer 264 is placed on the radially external end of the internal copper hoop 250. It is preferably welded by its radially internal periphery to the stainless steel sheath 260.
- the washer 260 preferably has an external radius less than the radius R2 of the blind bore 246.
- This arrangement is to allow the internal copper hoop 250 and the washer 264 to be assembled in the blind bore 246, while ensuring close contact between the external wall of the internal copper hoop 250 and the internal wall of the steel body 240 formed by the blind bore 246, despite the difference in coefficient of expansion between the copper making up the hoop 250 and the stainless steel making up the washer 264.
- the seal 270 is preferably a seal designed to be subject to radial expansion when subjected to axial compression.
- the seal 270 is adapted to the geometry of the bottom 247 of the bore 246.
- FIG. 3 shows a first embodiment of a seal 270 adapted to a bottom 247 of flat bore and orthogonal to the axis 202.
- the seal 270 shown in FIG. 3 essentially comprises a ring 271 provided with a first lip 272 directed generally radially inwards and axially inwards from the roller and with a second lip 273 directed generally radially outwards and axially towards the outside of the roller.
- FIG. 4 shows a second alternative embodiment of a compressible seal 270 adapted to a bottom 247 of a bore of pyramidal cross section.
- the seal 270 shown in FIG. 4 comprises an annular block 274 having an axially internal planar face 275 which rests on the axially external surface of the washer 264.
- the annular block 274 has a radially internal cylindrical surface 276 of revolution around the axis 202 and generally complementary to the external surface of the sleeve 260.
- the annular block 274 has a radially external surface 277 of radius less than the bore 246.
- the annular block 274 is delimited by two facets 278, 279, axially external, inclined relative to the axis 202 to be generally parallel to the facets delimiting the bottom 247 of the bore 246.
- These facets 278, 279 are provided with a plurality of annular lips 2790 designed to come to rest on the associated facets of the bottom 247 of bore 246.
- the sheath 260 in stainless steel is assembled by hooping inside the internal copper hoop 250 (heating hoop 250 and cooling sheath 260).
- the stainless steel washer 264 is engaged on the axially outer end of the sleeve 260 and welded to it.
- the internal copper hoop 250 is then assembled by shrinking in the bore 246 of the steel body 240 (heating body 240 and cooling hoop 250). Thanks to its lower dimension, the washer 264 does not disturb this hooping assembly despite the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between stainless steel and copper, and despite the close complementarity provided between the internal copper hoop 250 and the bore 246 (straightness and precise dimension of the outer surface of the hoop 250 and the bore 246, over a great length).
- the seal 270 undergoes axial compression which causes a radial expansion of this seal capable of guaranteeing a good seal on the axially external end of the internal copper hoop 250.
- the stainless steel washer 262 can then be placed on the axially internal end of the sleeve 260 and welded to the latter and to the steel body 240.
- the steel body 240 is in one piece. It does not have a tip similar to the tip 180 above with reference to FIG. 1.
- the mechanical resistance of the roller 200 is thus reinforced. This can withstand significant torsional forces, in particular when the rotation stops suddenly.
- At least one of the two pins 220 is provided axially on the outside of the internal copper hoop 250 with at least one through bore 249 extending in a generally radial direction relative to the axis 202.
- This bore is designed to open into a water box intended to recover the cooling water circulating in the central passage 230 of the roller.
- a water box has been sketched in FIG. 2 under the reference 300. It can be the subject of numerous embodiments known to those skilled in the art and will therefore not be described in more detail below.
- each journal 220 has at least two radial bores 249 opening into the water box 300.
- radial bores 249 are provided on only one of the two journals 220, namely the one equipped with the rotation drive means.
- the coolant is introduced axially, through the central passage 230 into one of the pins, and emerges at the second pin through the radial passages 249, into the water box 300.
- This silver plating can be formed either on the internal surface of the bore 246 or on the external surface of the hoop 250.
- the external surface of the pin 240 is chrome-plated.
- the external surface of the steel bodies 240 can be provided with bearings 290, 292 for seals associated with a bearing placed between these bearings.
- the external surface of the steel bodies 240 can also be provided with a thread 280 intended to receive a nut used for tightening this bearing.
- the bearing surfaces 290, 292 can be formed for example in chrome, or using a stainless steel ring, or even using a stainless steel ring coated with chromium oxide.
- the threads 280 can be formed in the mass of the steel bodies 240.
- the axial end of the steel bodies 240 is adapted in a manner known per se to receive the rotary drive means.
- the end of the steel bodies 240 may be provided with a thread 2400, in the bore 245, and with an external thread 2402.
- the 2400 internal thread is intended to receive a sealing plug.
- the thread 2402 is intended to receive a tightening nut of the water box, and the drive means.
- a manifold surface 294 can be formed between the thread 280 and the water box.
- This collector bearing surface 294 can be formed by depositing silvering or copper by electrolysis for example.

Abstract
