Description
- This invention relates to a device for controlling the opening of a door of a vehicle, especially for the bonnet of the vehicle.
- More particularly, the invention relates to a device according to claim 1, which is known from JP-A-58 004 673. This document shows a device which permits to make a hood opening angle variable, including a telescopic gas spring having a first end articulated to the body of the vehicle and a second end articulated to the door and adjusting means to vary the opening arrangement of the door from a normal open to a more open position. Said adjusting means include a sliding coupling between the second end of the spring and the door and a releasable stop mechanism.
- Additionally, DE-39 16 739 shows an articulation device for articulating a door to the body of a vehicle, including an articulated quadrilateral device.
- By virtue of the devices of the type defined hereinabove, it is possible to obtain two opening arrangements of the door, one normal open arrangement, which, if the device is applied to the bonnet, is sufficient for the normal operations of ordinary checking and maintenance of the components of the engine and a more open arrangement allowing for greater accessibility for extended maintenance and repair operations.
- The object of this invention is to produce a device of the type specified hereinabove which can be operated in a simple manner and is more compact and economical than the devices known hitherto.
- This problem is overcome according to the invention by a device according to claim 1.
- By virtue of this solution, it is possible to use a conventional gas spring which does not require substantial structural modification. The gas spring may be disposed in the lateral channels of the bonnet or the lid of the boot, reducing as far as possible the overall dimensions of the device. The manually operable adjusting means allowing for passage from the normal open position to the more open position are situated at the point of articulation of the gas spring to the door and are thus in a readily accessible position.
- Other features and advantages of this invention will become clear from the following detailed description with reference to the accompanying drawings, provided purely by way of a non-limiting example, in which:
- Figures 1, 2 and 3
- are schematic side views of a device according to this invention respectively in the arrangements with the door closed, open bin the normal position and open in the more open position, and
- Figures 4 and 5
- are perspective views on a larger scale of the parts indicated by the arrows IV and V in Figure 1.
- With reference to the drawings, the bonnet of a vehicle, designated by the reference numeral 1, is articulated to the
body 2 by means of an articulatedquadrilateral mechanism 4. Themechanism 4 comprises alower flange 6 fixed to thebody 2 and to which the lower ends of twoarms arms element 12 which is fixed to the bonnet 1 by means of aflange 14. - A pair of telescopic gas springs are interposed between the bonnet 1 and the
body 2, only one of which can be seen in the drawings and is designated by thereference numeral 16. Eachspring 16 has afirst end 18 articulated to thebody 2 in the vicinity of theflange 6 and asecond end 20 which is articulated to the bonnet 1 in the manner described hereinafter. As can be seen in greater detail in Figure 5, anarticulation element 24 formed by a plate having aslot 26 is fixed to the free end of therod 22 of theair spring 16. Theslot 26 is traversed by apin 28 integral with the bonnet 1. Thepin 28 is free to slide along theslot 26 and to rotate relative to thehinge element 24 about its longitudinal axis A which constitutes the axis of articulation of thesecond end 20 of theair spring 16 to the bonnet 1. - A
rocker arm 30 is pivoted on thearticulation element 24 and cooperates with apin spring 32 which holds it in the position shown in Figure 5. Therocker arm 30 has astop face 34 which bears against thepin 28 and prevents displacement thereof along theslot 26. Therocker arm 30 has anintegral actuating component 36 which can be actuated manually in order to oscillate therocker arm 30 in the direction indicated by the arrows B against the return action of thespring 32. Therocker arm 30 also has acam surface 38, the function of which will be clear from the following. - The operation of the device will now be described with reference to Figures 1 and 3.
- In Figure 1, the device is situated in the arrangement corresponding to the closed position of the door. The
pin 28 is located at the end of theslot 26 closer to therod 22 of theair spring 16 and is held in this position by therocker arm 30. Thearticulation element 24 and thepin 28 are nevertheless free to execute a relative rotation about the axis A. - Figure 2 shows the normal open arrangement of the bonnet 1. In this arrangement, the
pin 28 and thearticulation element 24 are situated in the arrangement illustrated in Figures 1 and 5. The angle of opening of the bonnet 1 is designated by the letter C and has a value of approximately 60o. - Starting from the arrangement of Figure 2, in order then to open the bonnet 1, the actuating
component 36 of therocker arm 30 is actuated manually, resulting in oscillation of the rocker arm in the directions indicated by the arrows B in Figure 5. In this manner, thepin 28 is free to slide along theslot 26 and is brought to the end of the slot further from therod 22 of theair spring 16. Upon this movement of thepin 28 with respect to thehinge element 24, thearms - In order to close the bonnet 1 starting from the more open arrangement, the actuating
component 36 of therocker arm 30 must be actuated, after which it is sufficient to push the bonnet downwards. Thepin 28 is thus moved along theslot 26 and cooperates with thecam surface 38 of therocker arm 30, oscillating it in the direction indicated by the arrows B in Figure 5. When the pin reaches the vicinity of the end of theslot 26 closer to theshaft 22, therocker arm 30, displaced by thespring 32, returns to the stop position illustrated in Figure 5.
