Abstract

A description is given of a modular display device formed by liquid crystal cells. The liquid crystal cells in each case have a liquid crystal layer (1), which is enclosed between two parallel glass substrates (2, 3) and a sealing frame (8) connecting their rims, as well as transparent electrodes (4, 5) on the faces of the glass substrates facing the liquid crystal layer. In order to connect them to external control electronics, the electrodes are guided through the sealing frame and contacted outside thereof to a flexible conductive foil (9). In this arrangement, the contact region between the electrodes and the conductive foil extends perpendicular to the plane of the glass substrate, so that the contact surface has minimum dimensions in the display plane.

Description

The invention relates to a display device according to the preamble of claim 1.

Large-area liquid crystal displays usually require a modular system, since the technologically feasible areas of a liquid crystal matrix are limited. In the case of a modular construction, however, the contacting areas lying in the display plane between the display elements considerably disturb the viewer.

From DE 38 40 836 A1 a liquid crystal display arrangement with a display element with several liquid crystal cells is known, in which electrical connection points for the liquid crystal cells extend to the edge of the display element. Conductive tracks of a multilayer flexible connecting part are contacted with the connection points lying in the plane of the display element. This is bent around the edge of the display element out of its plane, so that the area occupied by the contact in this plane is kept relatively small. However, it is still perceived as clearly annoying.

It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a modular display device formed from liquid crystal cells, in which the liquid crystal cells each have a liquid crystal layer enclosed between two parallel glass substrates and a sealing frame connecting their edges and transparent electrodes are provided on the surfaces of the glass substrates facing the liquid crystal layer for connection to external control electronics through the sealing frame and contacted outside of it with a flexible conductor foil, in which the areas lying in the display plane are kept even smaller for contacting.

This object is achieved by the feature specified in the characterizing part of claim 1. Advantageous developments of the display device according to the invention result from the subclaims.

Because the contact area between the electrodes and the conductor foil extends perpendicular to the plane of the glass substrates, the contact area in the display plane has minimal dimensions, so that it is hardly noticeable to the viewer.

The invention is explained below with reference to an embodiment shown in the figure. This shows a vertical section through the edge region of two adjacent liquid crystal cells with an electrical connection for one of these cells.

The liquid crystal cells each consist in a known manner of a liquid crystal 1, two glass substrates 2 and 3 enclosing them, translucent electrodes 4 and 5 made of tin indium oxide (ITO) each on the surface of the glass substrates 2 and 3 facing the liquid crystal 1, an analyzer 6, a polarizer 7 and a sealing frame 8 that seals the space between the glass substrates 2 and 3 at the edge.

The glass substrates 2 and 3 and the sealing frame 8 form a tight chamber for receiving the liquid crystal 1. The electrodes 4 and 5 are guided to the outside for connection to the control electronics between the glass substrates 4 and 5 and the sealing frame 8.

The electrical connection between the electrodes 4 and 5 and the control electronics takes place via a flexible conductor foil, the individual conductor tracks of which are contacted with the electrodes of the liquid crystal cells. The conductor film 9 extends in the area of the liquid crystal cells perpendicular to the plane of the glass substrates 2 and 3 or to the display plane and the contact area between the electrodes 4 and 5 and the conductor film 9 also extends in this direction.

The contact between the electrodes 4 and 5 and the conductor foil 9 can be produced in various ways. In the figure, a contact adhesive 10 is shown, which is applied to the side of the sealing frame 8 facing away from the liquid crystal 1 and thus connects the electrodes 4 and 5 to the conductor foil 9. For example, the glass substrates 2 and 3 can also be vapor-deposited on the edge surfaces perpendicular to their plane with a layer of metal or tin-indium oxide which is connected to the electrodes 4 and 5 and then this layer is soldered to the conductor tracks of the conductor foil 9 or glued.

Another possibility is to connect the electrodes 4 and 5 to the conductor foil 9 by means of a polymer which has been made conductive by laser radiation. Finally, instead of metal vapor deposition, the edge surfaces of the glass substrates 2 and 3 can also be printed with a conductive resin.

A box-shaped holding frame 11, which is attached to the back of the liquid crystal cells by an adhesive 12, is used for mechanical stabilization and guiding of the conductor foil 9. The conductor foil 9 is firmly glued to the holding frame 11 so that it is not subjected to tensile forces. In a recess of the holding frame 11 there is an integrated circuit 13 for the control, which is contacted with the conductor foil 9 using TAB technology (tape automatic bonding). The holding frame 11 is designed in such a way that it does not take up more space in the direction of the display plane than the sealing frame 8. At the lower end of the holding frame 11 there is a bus connection 14 which is in contact with the conductor foil 9.
