Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an electrical connector of monopolar type with earth continuity for protection against electromagnetic influences and in particular an electrical connector in accordance with the preamble of claim 1.
  • the invention relates in particular to an electrical power connector, sealed and shielded, capable of allowing the connection of light electrical cables, of aluminum type, for use on airborne military equipment. On these materials, in fact, shielding from electromagnetic influences is imperative.
  • Document DE-B-1 946 158 discloses an electrical connector of the aforementioned type and the electrical contact of which is made with envelopment by complementary insulating elements and which is connected by its rear part to the cable by means of its sheath. Such a connector is not suitable for the aforementioned military applications.
  • this arrangement according to claim 1 guarantees that the concentric positioning of the main contact is maintained relative to the external mass contact part, which is essential for obtaining protection from electromagnetic influences. It also ensures the correct positioning of the contact elements for their engagement. Finally, because of the seal obtained on the cable connection and on the connection itself, it allows the use of so-called "bi-metal" contacts with light cable for airborne military use, in particular with an aluminum core, protecting from pollution or oxidation phenomena (formation of alumina) due to the renewal of the air which is inside the connector thus plugged in.
  • the plug represented in FIG. 1 corresponds to the male part of the connector, the symmetrical female part or base carrying the socket 1 receiving the main contact pin 3 being represented in FIG. 2.
  • This plug comprises a main contact element 3, as mentioned above. , a part forming a ground contact 5, a part forming a connection 7 of the plugged-in electric cable 9, a support part 11 of the main contact and an external part 13 forming the body of the connector.
  • This last part in light metal, to which the aforementioned elements are fixed, is formed of parts joined to each other, respectively, a front part 13a and a rear part 13b. It ensures the electrical ground continuity of the connector. It is in fact connected by its rear end part or end piece 15 to the ground braid of the cable which is fixed there over its entire periphery (360 ° angle) in a conventional manner by a clamping ring and at the front it carries the conventional cylindrical mass contact part 5 intended to cooperate in contact engagement with the corresponding complementary part 5 ′ of the female part of the connector. The engagement between these earth contact parts is sealed by an elastic ring 17 in the form of a rod, housed in a suitable groove in one of the parts.
  • the main contact part is a conventional solid male cylindrical pin arranged concentrically with the surrounding external mass contact part 5. Its diameter is variable as a function of the power to be transmitted.
  • This part which cooperates, as mentioned above, with the corresponding socket 1 of the female part of the connector is made of copper alloy protected by surface treatment against oxidation. It is integral with a support part 11 formed from the same material.
  • This last part is essentially cylindrical with an axis of that of the connector, comprising an internal barrel 19 housing the stripped part in contact with the end of the connected cable 9 and an external surface 21 carried in flexible, sealed and insulating connection with the body part. connector.
  • This external surface has a groove 23 formed towards the front with a straight front blank 25 and a rear inclined blank 27.
  • This groove receives a deformable (semi-rigid) ring 29 of trapezoidal shape, which is interposed in a space provided between two rigid insulating parts, one in the form of a stair step 31 at the front and the other of enlarged section 33 at the rear.
  • the front insulating part 31 is mounted as a retainer on a shoulder 35 formed on the body part 13a and covers the front face of the support part 11 of the contact.
  • the rear insulating part 33 comprises a rear shoulder 37 by which it receives a clamping ring 39 screwed with stop 41 on the internal surface of the body part.
  • This clamping ring allows the pressure insulating parts to be applied against each other, on the one hand, and on the corresponding internal surface of the body part, on the other hand, thanks to the compression of the ring. internal deformable 29 trapped applied to the contact support part.
  • the contact support part 11 is thus secured to the body part 13a and the flexible ring 29 catches up with the adjustment clearance of the insulating parts 31 and 33, ensuring a concentric, flexible and sealed positioning of the contact relative to the body part. .
  • the positioning of the cell 1 on the body part is identical, except that the front retaining insulator 31 ′ extends over the length of the cell.
  • connection part 7 of the cable for the plug is formed at the rear of the connector, on the rear part 13b of the body, which is screwed by a middle clamping ring 43 on the front part 13a carrying the main contact and the contact of mass.
  • the clamping ring 43 is in screw connection on the front part 13a, being retained on the rear part 13b by a stop ring 45. When tightening, these parts are applied to one another under pressure and with sealing on an interposing joint 47.
  • This rear part encloses a cylindrical insulating ring 49, flexible and of enlarged section, extending around the sheath of the threaded cable, from the end piece 15 until substantially, with a slight clearance, at the external end of the part. rear insulator 33.
  • this ring 49 compresses in its housing with sealing around the electric cable and the internal surface of the rear part 13b.
  • connection of the cable is obtained easily, by threading the stripped end of the cable, loose ring 43, into the barrel 19 of the contact, by conventional crimping of this stripped part (hexagonal crimping by suitable part) then by tightening of the ring 43 for joining the body parts 13a and 13b.
  • the cable is then connected, secured to the contact and to the rear part of the connector, being perfectly positioned relative to the body, insulated and tightened on the latter.
  • the connector has a complete air and fluid tightness, that is to say at the level of the cable connection, at the level of the connector itself (between its front and rear parts), at level of the connection (between the ground contacts of the plug and the additional base) and finally at the level of the main contact (pin and internal cell) and the cable itself (the stripped core of the cable crimped on the barrel of the contact support part).
  • this connector may include the so-called "rackability” option, namely that the connection or disconnection of the connector can be ensured by operating a drawer (not shown) slidingly mounted in a cabinet where the movable part of the connector is integrated on the bottom of the drawer and the fixed part is installed for example on the chassis of the bottom of the cabinet.
  • the operations are then carried out by extracting or installing the drawer, which makes it possible to connect or disconnect several assembled connectors simultaneously.
  • the drawer is in principle mounted on rails or slides whose guiding precision is very clearly insufficient to ensure the correct alignment of one or more power connectors of the drawer.
  • the plug is automatically centered with respect to the base via the chamfers of the ends of the contacts 5.5 ′ of the fixed and mobile parts.
  • the plug will enter the body of the base, achieving the necessary concentricity for electrical contact.
  • the progression of the drawer will ensure by its planned stroke, the correct insertion of the male contact in the socket.
  • the compensation spring will compress more or less to compensate for the drawers' travel tolerances. (Z axis). Maintaining the plugged-in position is ensured by locking the drawer on its carrying frame.
  • the connector according to the invention finds full validation for the connections of electrical aluminum cables which are very subject to oxidation.
  • Such a so-called "bi-metal" connector is shown in straight plug in FIG. 3 and in bent plug in FIG. 4, the base remaining for example that of FIG. 2.
  • connection part 7 which consists of an internal cylindrical barrel 19 ′, made of nickel-plated aluminum (preventing oxidation) welded by necking in the axis of the connector to the support part 11 ′ of copper alloy of the main contact.
  • connection part 7 which consists of an internal cylindrical barrel 19 ′, made of nickel-plated aluminum (preventing oxidation) welded by necking in the axis of the connector to the support part 11 ′ of copper alloy of the main contact.
  • the flexible ring 49 ′ trapped in the rear part of the connector makes it possible, when tightening the junction ring 43, to perfectly position the cable and the body 13 concentrically forming continuity of mass, just as it ensures a external peripheral sealing near the end piece 15. Internally, this is ensured by an internal sealing ring 51 housed in a groove complementary to the barrel, the stripped end of the cable being crimped as before.
  • the sealing system thus designed prevents any renewal of air within the connector thus formed which would lead fairly quickly to its deterioration by the formation of alumina (very bad
  • the connector of FIG. 4 is identical to the previous one except for the angled part 13c, the larger volume of which is calculated for the angle passage of the central conductive part 53 secured to the main contact.
