Definitions
- the invention relates to cutting elements intended in particular to be mounted on rotary or alternative tools for drilling or sawing, and constituting such tools, of the type comprising grains of abrasive product retained by a matrix comprising a binder. It relates more particularly to tools intended for drilling, drilling or cutting hard and abrasive materials of the type constituted by a metallic core and a consolidation matrix (reinforced concrete for the building for example).
- the diamond tools currently used for working hard synthetic materials generally include a steel support on which are mounted segments made up of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond grains, or of a mixture of thermostable polycrystalline diamond grains with diamond grains natural or synthetic monocrystalline, dispersed in a binder.
- binders include iron, bronze, nickel, cobalt and cobalt alloys such as stellites.
- To this binder is often added a charge for reinforcing the metal matrix, for example tungsten carbide.
- the choice of mixture may preferably be made on an abrasive consisting essentially of grains of thermostable polycrystalline diamond or essentially of grains of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond.
- the wear of the binder can be observed by the appearance of "comet tails" behind the diamond crystals, the life of the tool then being limited by the loosening of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond grains and / or the wear and loosening of the diamond grains thermostable polycrystalline according to the embodiment of the tool.
- the examination of the damage to the tool leads to think that the diamond grains brought into contact with the metallic element, generally steel , undergo partial or total graphitization the faster the higher the contact temperature. The resulting deterioration is very rapid, thus considerably limiting the use of such cutting elements for cutting reinforced concrete for example.
- the invention aims to provide a cutting element in particular for a sawing or drilling tool, shaped by powder metallurgy and comprising particles of abrasive product, this cutting element allowing in particular a significant improvement in the performance of a tool when machining hard and abrasive materials of the type containing a metallic core.
- said particles of abrasive product comprise grains of thermostable polycrystalline cubic boron nitride dispersed in a binder.
- the abrasive product can also contain grains of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond, or grains of monocrystalline cubic boron nitride or grains of thermostable polycrystalline diamond. These grains will usually be less than 2 mm in size.
- the binder will generally be metallic.
- the invention also provides a method of manufacturing such an element, characterized in that grains of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride are prepared thermostable either directly in a cell of an ultra-high pressure device or from thermostable cubic polycrystalline boron nitride pellets which are ground or cut, by mixing grains of said nitride of thermostable polycrystalline cubic boron with a binder and possibly grains of thermostable monocrystalline cubic boron nitride and / or at least one other abrasive such as tungsten carbide, and in that the binder is sintered or infiltrated to form a matrix .
- Cubic boron nitride (or CBN) in monocrystalline or polycrystalline form is much less resistant to compression and abrasion than diamond in the same forms; the working of rocks and hard and abrasive materials has therefore, until now, been carried out by tools or cutting elements essentially consisting of grains of monocrystalline or polycrystalline diamond thermostable.
- cubic boron nitride, in the form of thermostable monocrystalline or polycrystalline grain has shown, against all expectations, exceptional performance when it is incorporated into the metal matrix of a cutting element for working hard and abrasive synthetic materials with a metallic core.
- the element may, depending on the applications and in particular the metal content of the volume of material to be machined, consist essentially of abrasive grains of thermostable polycrystalline cubic boron nitride or of a mixture of these same grains with grains of boron nitride monocrystalline and / or with grains of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond or thermostable polycrystalline.
- abrasive grains of thermostable polycrystalline cubic boron nitride or of a mixture of these same grains with grains of boron nitride monocrystalline and / or with grains of natural or synthetic monocrystalline diamond or thermostable polycrystalline.
- the volume content of metallic element of the material to be machined constitutes the essential parameter to be taken into consideration to fix the percentages of the grains of CBN compared to the grains of PCD.
- the weight percentage of the grains of boron nitride will be less than 95%.
- Figure 1 is a block diagram showing the sintering operation of a cutting element.
- Figure 2 shows a possible mounting of a cutting element according to the invention on a disc to constitute a saw.
- Figure 3 shows the evolution of the service life of a reinforced concrete sawing tool as a function of the CBN / Diamond volume ratio.
- the manufacture of a cutting element for sawing, coring or drilling involves the preparation of a mixture containing the powder binder intended to constitute the matrix (iron, cobalt or nickel for example), abrasive grains of nitride of polycrystalline and diamond boron, and most often another abrasive less hard than abrasive grains made of boron nitride such as tungsten carbide.
- the type of abrasive grain, their particle sizes and their respective concentrations are established according to the intended application.
- a charge 10 of the mixture is placed in a mold 12 (see FIG. 1) fitted with non-heating means shown whose shape corresponds to that of the element to be produced.
- This mold is provided with means represented in the form of a plunger 14, making it possible to put the load in compression. All of these elements can be incorporated into a press. Sintering is carried out conventionally under moderate pressure at a temperature below the limit of the chemical stability of the abrasive grains. Once the sintering is complete, the element is separated from the mold. It can, if necessary, be shaped by one of the machining methods applicable to diamonds, in particular by grinding, laser, electroerosion or electron beam. The finished element 16 is fixed on its support, for example a disc 18 for sawing, or a tube for coring or drilling (see FIG. 2). The fixing can be achieved by brazing at 20 due to the presence of the binder or it can be mechanical.
- the manufacture of a sawing, coring or drilling tool can also be carried out by sintering the powder mixture and the abrasive grains directly on the steel disc or on the tube according to the same steps as those described above.
- FIG. 3 schematically shows the variation in the life of a cutting tool according to the invention obtained during the working of a hard and abrasive material containing a metallic core, as a function of the relative concentration of the nitride grains cubic boron and diamond grains of the cutting element containing a metal binder, a metal matrix reinforcing abrasive such as tungsten carbide and grains of boron and diamond nitride.
- the curve representing the life of the tool has a minimum for a certain value R M of the ratio or volume percentage between cubic boron nitride and diamond in the cutting element. This optimal value depends on the nature of the material which is being machined.
- the element may have a homogeneous constitution throughout its mass. It may also contain varying concentrations and sizes of each of the types of abrasive grains selected. It may also include abrasive grains of CBN and / or diamond only in the part constituting the cutting tool itself carrying out the machining, the rear part intended for its attachment to the body of the tool then being deprived of abrasive grains.
- the sintering of the binder taking into account the thermostable nature of the abrasive grains, can be carried out by a conventional process, the temperature being able to go up to 1100 ° C. without thermal degradation.
- thermostable polycrystalline cubic boron nitride can be coated with a thin layer of binder metal by a chemical or physical process before mixing these grains with the binder powder intended to constitute the matrix.

Abstract
