Definitions
- This invention relates to electrical wiring systems particularly utilising so-called bus-bars housed in trunking.
- Two systems of wiring for mains lighting and power using busbars in trunking are known. Both have live, neutral and earth conductors located in elongate electrically insulating strip as a busbar, and that busbar is located in trunking so as to be available along the length of the trunking for electrical take-off connections by way of projecting connector pins of an electrical accessory or coupler.
- One of those known systems has its busbar interference fitting in the base of a channel section bottom member of its trunking, and is available at any position along its length for electrical connections by way of electrical accessories such as power sockets, spur units etc fitting to the open top of the bottom trunking member instead of and between lengths of blanking-off or cover strip.
- This is a highly convenient arrangement save for requiring its top-fitting electrical accessories to be screwed down onto flanges of the channel section bottom trunking part.
- a pins-to-busbar connection system comprising channel-section busbar conductors embedded in insulating strip, and connection pins having resilience and shaped to push-fit into and grip against insides of the conductors.
- Such channel-section conductors can be substantially fixed and substantially inflexible at their sides, relative to the pins which resiliently deform into contact with those sides.
- Such a connection system avoids any spreading of resilient parts contributing to integrity of electrical contact, relying instead upon natural resistance of resilient parts to being compressed, which may be multi-pronged with at least one bent to present a knee-formation.
- trunking including a base part having indenting or only short upstanding formations contributing to retention of or feet of a channel-section part with relatively long upstanding formations to a cover part or depending formations of at least one cover part, which in either case can be a central cover part for trunking with side compartments flanking a central busbar compartment,
- a trunking base part having an upstanding medial formation for attachment thereto of insulating strip containing or to have fitted therein spaced busbar conductors.
- the upstanding formation is of platform type with side flanges to which clips, or an extrusion as said channel-section part and contributing to compartmenting of the trunking engage for holding the insulating strip supported on the upstanding platform formation.
- the latter preferably has top surface formations cooperating with bottom formations of the strip for strip location purposes, say as proud formations going into grooving or rebating said bottom formations.
- the upstanding formation presents a rearward recess permitting mounting to surface-mounting brackets or other holding means, for example of elongate form, and further preferably with a snap-on action involving cooperating formations of the recess and the holding means.
- an accessory housing box for attachment to trunking equipped with busbar means, the accessory housing box fitting to support means for the busbar means, preferably to side flanging thereof, further preferably as in the above third aspect of this invention.
- Such accessory housing box may further have location formations at its bottom that cooperate with trunking formations otherwise serving to secure other trunking parts.
- an accessory housing box extending substantially wholly on or above formations of a trunking part either contributory to fitting of other trunking parts or supporting busbar means, say a base part as in the above second-mentioned aspect of this invention, preferably further as in the above third aspect hereof.
- a channel-section extrusion may serve in place of such an accessory housing box, and may engage in captive formations of a or said base part.
- an accessory housing box or busbar strip covering extrusion having a medial bottom part with accommodation for outwardly directed busbar conductor engaging connections, which may be of a part offering other connections to an accessory in the box, whether as inwardly directed other connections or as sockets in that part, which itself may be an adaptor fittable in a recess formation of the box bottom part and which may vary for different accessories.
- busbar trunking in traversing corners, and it is conventional to provide special angled connectors, frequently of a male-female entry type, for both of internal and external corners, and to do so additionally to providing straight connectors for consecutive lengths of busbar and trunking.
- a busbar connection device comprising two spaced parts each capable of electrically engaging conductors of the busbar concerned on a one-for-one basis, and respective electrical connections extending between those parts also on a one-to-one basis, which electrical connections are capable of being bent through at least 90°.
- the spaced parts can conveniently be sets of projecting connector pins held appropriately in insulating material for engagement with the busbar conductors, and that insulating material may be extended as, or attached to, members affording accommodation for the respective electrical connections from said spaced parts and part to hinging between those members.
- insulating material may be extended as, or attached to, members affording accommodation for the respective electrical connections from said spaced parts and part to hinging between those members.
- Significant thicknesses of the members and hinging thereof at or adjacent the surfaces of the members to be external for both of internal and external bends is preferred, and may involve chamfers of at least 45° of the members away from those surfaces.
- the accommodations offered by the members can conveniently cope with excesses of lengths of inextensible flexible conducting material of the electrical connections.
- Metal braids are preferred for the respective electrical connections, together with support by the members for assuring the braids traverse the hinging close to that hinging. Soldering or welding of ends of the braids to bent-over ends of the projecting connector pins is convenient. For three-conductor busbars, location of bent-over ends of the projecting connection pins to which the respective electrical connections are made is conveniently and advantageously in line transversely of the busbar, though it need not be so; then with that for the middle one of the conductors nearer to one of those for the two flanking conductors. Accommodation in such members for the electrical connection of ends of the middle pin then further preferably allows for kinking thereof to achieve offsetting where two identical said members are hinged together, conveniently by way of a single cover formation thinned to provide desired hinging.
- trunking that may be of extruded form, conveniently using plastics material, comprises a base part 12, central cover part 14, and side cover parts 16,18.
- the base part 12 has short upstanding formations 22A,B shown forming capture grooves 24A,B with reduced entries 26A,B for cooperating formations 28A,B shown as a bifurcated bead at ends of relatively long side walls 30A,B of the central cover part 10 shown extending down from groove formations 32A,B along top corners of the cover part 14. It will be appreciated that bead-and-groove interfitting could be reversed, i.e. beads on the base part 12.
- the base part 12 further has an upstanding platform 34 above an outward recess 36 with capture formations 38A,B for snap-fitting into suitable holding means, say of surface-mounting type, e.g. as spaced brackets or an elongate extrusion.
- suitable holding means say of surface-mounting type, e.g. as spaced brackets or an elongate extrusion.
- the platform 34 has side flanges 40A,B for engagement by generally C-shaped clips 42 shaped at 43A,B for flange engaging retention of busbar strip 44 of material having thermal and electrical insulating properties.
- the strip 44 is grooved at 46A,B,C to take U-section conductors 48A,B,C in any convenient way, whether snap fitting past reduced mouths of the grooves 46A,B,C or adhered in those grooves or set therein by ultrasonics or whatever, even simply held by the clips 42 as envisaged using stepped bead formations 49A,B,C.
- the platform 34 has top surface formations 50A,B shown as upstanding beads and the busbar strip 44 has cooperating base formations 52A,B shown as rebates that serve at least lateral location purpose for the trip 44 relative to the platform 34, but can, as indicated by matching undercuts, serve for at least first-fitting retention purposes.
- the beads 50A,B can, indeed preferably are, at a narrower spacing to fit into base grooves inboard of sides of the busbar strip 44. Further preferably, the beads and grooves are of different heights and/or widths to assure a particular orientation of the busbar strip on the platform 34. It will be appreciated that other cooperating formations would serve intended purposes, for example beads proud of the base of the strip 44 and grooves in the platform 34.
- the base part 12 is further shown extending to each side of the central part locating formations 22A,B and with upstanding edge formations 56A,B of end-toothed (58A,B) type to take corresponding formations 60A,B of side cover parts 16,18 further having snap-fit formations 62A,B for the top cover grooves 32A,B of the central cover part, specifically at shaped sides 66A,B thereof.
- the base part 12 For installation, typically with the trunking surface-mounted on a wall, the base part 12 is fixed to the wall either solely by clipping at its recess 36 onto holding means previously fixed to the wall or additionally by screwing through other base positions.
- the central cover part 14 will be cut to length between desired accessory positions and snap-fitted onto the base part 12, usually after fitting clamped accessories.
- accessory housing boxes such as indicated at 70 are used, conveniently of rectangular shape with formations 72A,B outwardly from its bottom 74 to make retaining engagement with flanges 40A,B of the busbar support platform 34, say toothed as shown at 76A,B for snap-fitting.
- Opposite box side walls 78A,B to extend along the length of the trunking are shown with groove formations 80A,B at their tops and generally resembling, and with outermost matching, those 32A,B of the central cover part 14, but wider and with additional inward teeth 82A,B to take and retain an accessory cover 84.
- the accessory box 70 has an upstand 86 in its bottom 74 above an outward recess 87 fitting over the busbar strip 44 and accommodated connection pins 88A,B,C extending outwardly to engage in the busbar conductors 48A,B,C.
- those pins 88A,B,C are of an adaptor part 90 fitting between sides 92A,B of an externally flanged DIN-rail formation on the raised bottom portion 86 and presenting inwardly directed connection pins 94A,B,C for specific accessory 96, indicated in Figure 3D as a rocker switch of a type described in our copending patent application No 9013837.1, but in Figure 2 as a socket of similar basic construction.
- Suitable saddle clips are of U-sahpe and may swing on the accessory body, preferably as in our co-filed British application.
- accessory housing box 70 including adaptor part 90 to busbar strip support 34 will pins 88 into busbar conductors 48, accessory 96 to adaptor part 90.
- the order of fitting lengths of central cover part between accessory housing boxes 70, side cover parts 62 along lengths of central cover part 14 and accessory housing boxes 70, and accessory covers 84, is clearly, conveniently and advantageously a matter of choice and good practice.
- Base part 112 is no longer of substantially flat form with upstands to each side of its flanged central platform 134 and recess 136. Instead, it extends from just below the side flanges 140A,B leaving medial downward extensions to its captive formations 138A,B and at its outer sides 156A,B; and is indented to form grooves 124A,B.
- the central platform 134 is wider in order to take busbar strip 144 for up to four conductors, and has retention upstands 150A,B therefor that are asymmetrically located to orientate the busbar strip 144 and engage same to each side of three busbar conductors normally provided for one-phase power supply as shown.
- the additional fourth groove 146D is shown without a channel section conductor; but, with one installed, can serve in supply of three-phase power or be used to provide a special clean earth.
- the retention upstands 150A,B are shown of symmetrical form.
- the base 112 is particularly well suited to extrusion in metal, typically aluminium, and to mounting on spaced clips or a continuous keyway by way of its recess 138.
- the extrusion 142 is of generally channel-section with side walls 130A,B presenting lower feet formations 128A,B for capture by the base indents 124A,B and upper grooves formations 132A,B for side covers 116,118 and a cover 114 that can be extruded (114) to follow lengths of trunking or moulded (114A) for individual accessory covers that can be formed stepped at ends to overlap onto extruded lengths.
- the extrusion 142 additionally or alternatively can replace the accessory boxes 70 previously described.
- the extrusion 142 has a bottom part 174 that has a central upstand 186, and corresponding recess 187, with sides 192A,B affording external flanging equivalent to a DIN-rail formation on its upstand 186 that can take an adaptor part 90 much as previously described.
- Figure 5 shows an accessory 196 with long connection pins 197A,B,C for direct connection into the busbar strip conductors.
- the extrusion 142 can be pre-punched with corresponding holes for the pins 197A,B,C.
- the extrusion 142 can be provided in long unpunched lengths and in short prepunched lengths to replace the boxes 70 of Figures 2 and 3C.
- the accessory 196 indicated as a socket, has connection by clips, see 198A to flanging 197A,B of upstands 192A,B of the extrusion 142.
- connection pins 254 act as seen in Figure 6. There could be embedment of conductors 224 as apparent from lips 223A,B, say formed by extrusion about substantially rigid channel section conductors 224. Spaced sides 225A,B of the conductor 224 are then substantially fixed, inflexible and incapable of deflection in the recessing 236. However, the clip system of Figure 4 or the extrusion 142 of Figure 5 are equally effective, with the strip terminating as dashed.
- connection pins 254 are shown, see Figures 7A and 7B also, as being multi-pronged, specifically of three limb form with two limbs 255A,C flanking the third limb 255B which is bent to present a knee 257.
- the pins 254 are of resilient conducting material and the knee 257 will be pressed towards the limbs 255A,C at entry into the conductor 224, thus promote achieving and maintaining good electrical contact for all three pin limbs 255A,B,C. Such entry is aided where free ends 259A,B of at least the unbent pin limbs 255A,C are curved inwards to J-shape as shown.
- Figure 7A shows the pin 254 before compression at entry into the conductor 224, the overall dimension X being greater than the width of the spacing between side walls 225A,B of the conductor 224.
- the gripping effect of the pin limbs 255 on to conductor side walls 225 can be further augmented by the formation of Figure 8 where the central bent limb 255B′ goes past the other limbs 255A′,C′ and also has a curved in end 259B′.
- Other pin formations are feasible, for example with fewer or more limb parts and/or with different ones or all bent to preferred contact-making shapes, even with limb parts overlapping sideways.
- trunking 310 has a base 311, upstanding side walls 312A,B and a push-fit cover 314 with formations 316A,B engaging upper edge formations 318A,B of the side walls 312A,B.
- busbar 320 comprises an insulating body 322, channel section conductors 324A,B,C embedded in recesses 326A,B,C and an exterior channel-section part 330.
- the latter is, of course, referred to above as the intermediate and/or busbar holding part.
- One of the conductors (324C) is shown stepped (up as shown) relative to the others to aid correct connection of pins thereto as well be described.
- the busbar body 322 further has downwardly extending location formations 327A,B,C, and deflectable but resiliently recovering retention formations 328A,B with free edge enlargements 329A,B.
- the intermediate member 330 has a base 332 and upstanding sides 334A,B with inward joggles 336A,B bringing side parts 338A,B closely against sides 321A,B of the busbar body 320 above the enlargements 329A,B. Free edge portions of sides 334A,B of the intermediate member 330 are shown bent outwardly as flanges 340A,B. Exterior shoulders 342A,B of the intermediate member 330 corresponding to the inward joggles 336A,B are shown engaged by deflectable but resiliently recovering upstands 344A,B extending from the base 312 of the trunking 310 and having free edge enlargements 346A,B for locating and retention purposes relative to the intermediate member 330.
- the different medial locations of the joggles 336A,B of the intermediate member 330 ensure that relationships of the busbar 320 to intermediate member 330 and of the latter to the trunking 310 will always be the same.
- Free edges 348A,B of the flanges 340A,B are shown within a recessed formation between side extensions 352A,B of the connection pin holder 350 having projecting pins 354A,B,C located to mate with the conductors 324A,B,C respectively, see step 356C to pin 354C.
- the side extensions 352A,B can serve to limit movement apart of the flanges 340A,B, thus spreading of the mouth of the intermediate member 330, though it is preferred for the latter to be too rigid/resilient for such spreading at least without recovery.
- any such limiting action would, of course, be opposite to any action of the enlargements 329A,B at entry of the busbar body 322 into the intermediate member 330 and thus give any useful restoring action relative thereto, if required, see taperings 356A,B of side extensions 352A,B, at fitting of the connection pin holder 350.
- connection pin holder 350 advantageously involves latching relative to the intermediate member 330, conveniently by clip or snap action of suitable formations, which may be separate, relative to flanges 340A,B.
- suitable formations which may be separate, relative to flanges 340A,B.
- positive displacement latches is equally feasible, say as slide action members passing through side extensions 352A,B.
- connection pin holder 350 is shown separate from, though it could otherwise be attached to or integral with, an actual accessory body 360 fitting in an aperture in, or cut into, the trunking cover 314 and finishing substantially flush therewith.
- relative small section regions 358A,B of the pin holder part 350 allow flexing of the side extensions 352A,B, as may be useful if the intermediate member 330 can experience mouth spreading when the busbar body 322 is inserted therein, such usefulness being in restoring such spreading then retaining such restoration by close correspondence of contacting surfaces 359A and 362.
- the intermediate member 330 be of a material, for example aluminium or aluminium alloy, that is stronger and more rigid than the material, typically synthetic plastics of the trunking 310, specifically the location formations 344A,B of its base. At least for such preference, the intermediate member will experience substantially no mouth spreading at insertion of the busbar body 322 and will act as a busbar holder or outer part of substantially physical integrity.
- a connector device 410 comprises two sets of three projecting connector pins at 412, 414 spaced apart and held in position at ends 452A,B of accommodating members 450A,B for electrical connections 454L,E,N between the sets of pins having bent-over ends 456L,E,N onto which connection projections 458L,E,N overlie and are connected by solders or welds 460L,E,N.
- the latter reference are applied in Figures 12, 13 and 15 for the pins at 412, but are further applied primed in Figures 13 and 15 for the pins at 414, the latter Figures only showing welds or solders at 460.
- the busbar conductors 422L,E,N are shown in evenly spaced parallel relation. Ends 456L,N of the outer ones 422L,N are shown in Figure 12 as bent outwardly in recesses 462L,N. The end 456E of the central one is shown bent towards that of one (422N) of the outer ones and with the prongs of its connecting pin reversed relative to those of the other connecting pins, but of the same formation. That allows use of wider recesses 462L,E,N and with reduced asymmetry of their spacings.
- the two connection accommodating members 450A,B are shown identical, and will normally be mouldings from synthetic plastics material.
- connection accommodating members 450A,B further have their other ends 466A,B that are adjacent on assembly chamfered or sloped at an angle corresponding to desired hinging of those members 450A,B, typically to give an included angle ⁇ of not more than 45°, preferably at least a little less, thereby readily allowing 90° internal (474) or external (472) corners to be followed, see Figures 16 and 17.
- the connecting accommodating members 450A,B have pairs of guide walls 468L,E,N defining locations for medial parts of the connecting braids 454L,E,N close to the tops of the members 450A,B and chambers 470A,B, of the members 450A,B accommodate kinks of the braids as kink lengths that reduce on fitting to an internal bend 474 and increase on fitting to an external bend 472, see full and dashed lines at 478A,B in Figure 13.
- connection accommodating members 450A,B are a cover 840 that has hinging 482 centrally, conveniently formed as thinning of synthetic plastics material from which the cover 480 is moulded, even preferably as a bead formation as seen most clearly in Figures 16 and 17.
- connection accommodating members 450A,B are shown formed with slottings, see 482A,B in Figure 10 leaving resilient outer leaves 484A,B having a tooth formations 486A,B and their ends to snap-fit onto edges of the flanges 432A,B of the channel member 430 of the busbar.
- the members 450A,B then fit snugly to the busbar strip 424.
- the ends of the leaves 450A,B are further shown with projecting pierced ears 490 by which strapping may further secure the connection device 410 near ends of busbar to be joined.
- the slottings 482A,B can be of C-shape to come through sides of the members 450A,B, see dashed 414 in Figure 11 so as to facilitate movement of the leaves 484A,B.
- connector devices 410 offer all of straight and bent connections of busbars that will always be fully shielded by the cover 480. Continuation of such covering of the busbars is available from a cover formation 500, see Figures 18, 19 and 20.
- the cover 500 has returned side edges 502, 504 forming snap-fitting recesses 506, 508 for edges of flanging 432A,B of the channel member 430 of the busbar.
- connector devices hereof are equally readily designed to be effective for other pin and conductor connection arrangements and other designs of busbar, ie, so long as pins are compatible with getting electrical connections to the conductors and there is physical conformity between confronting faces at hinged connection accommodation parts and busbars.
- outwardly directed flanges (197) for accessory mounting within trunking or within another accessory receiver, such as a wall-mounting box, using clips at least at one end of an accessory body, whether relying on resilience or on swinging into place, is both advantageous and an aspect of invention.
