Abstract

The invention relates to a method for determining and regulating the liquid metal level in a metallurgical vessel, especially an open-ended die of a casting plant. In order to provide a method in which the liquid level can be determined and regulated in a simple and reproducible manner, it is proposed that inert gas be introduced into the molten metal at a certain freely selectable point within the vessel, that the flow rate and absolute pressure of the inert gas introduced be measured, that the absolute pressure measured when the zero value of the flow rate is exceeded be recorded and the actual value of the distance of the surface of the liquid from the point at which the inert gas is introduced be determined from the difference between the absolute pressure and the pressure acting on the surface of the liquid, that the difference from a predetermined setpoint value be determined from the said distance ascertained and fed as an electric actuating signal to an actuator for regulating the liquid metal level and/or the quantity flowing out or withdrawn from the vessel. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a method for determining and regulating the bath level of a molten metal in a metallurgical vessel, in particular a continuous mold of a casting plant.

It is known to determine the bath level of a molten metal with the aid of optical, radiometric or electrodynamic means. A proposal of this type is known from EP 0 150 670 A2, in which eddy currents are induced and measured via a coil in the molten metal and are used to determine the distance of the molten metal from the coil. The inflow quantity to be controlled to the molten metal then results from the comparison of the target and actual values. Another method of this type, which uses optical means, is known from DE-OS 29 31 199. Here, light pulses are projected onto the bathroom surface via a mirror and the reflected light pulses are detected. The transit time of the light is a measure of the distance of the bathroom surface from the optical device.

On the one hand, these methods are prone to failure and, on the other hand, they are very complex.

The invention is therefore based on the object of creating a method of the generic type in which the bath level can be determined and regulated in a simple and reproducible manner.

The object is achieved in a method of the generic type in that inert gas is introduced into the molten metal at a certain freely selectable location within the vessel, that the absolute pressure of the inert gas introduced is measured, and that the absolute pressure measured during a flow that is different from zero is registered and from the difference between the absolute pressure and the pressure acting on the surface of the bath, the actual value of the distance of the bath surface from the location of the inert gas introduction is determined, that from this determined distance the difference to a predetermined target value is formed and as an electrical control signal of an actuator for regulating the bath level and / or the amount flowing out or withdrawn from the vessel is supplied. This method according to the invention is advantageously simple to carry out. This is clear from the further embodiment of the invention, in which the inert gas is introduced at the end of a feed pipe for the melt which is immersed in the metal bath, or in that the inert gas is introduced at the bottom of the metal bath.

The method according to the invention is explained using the drawing as an example.

The illustration selected in FIG. 1 shows the method according to the invention in use when filling a continuous mold of a casting plant. In this case, the inert gas is removed from a pressure vessel and fed to a flow control device 2 via an adjustable throttle 1. The inert gas passing through the flow control device 2 passes through a pipeline 3 to a pipe 4 which projects into the melt. Such a tube can be realized, for example, by an additional hole in a dip spout, the hole opening into the melt at the immersing end. The pipeline 3 is in direct connection with a pressure measuring device. In the event that inert gas flows into the melt to form gas bubbles, a non-zero flow is registered by the flow control device 2. If a flow of inert gas different from zero is ensured, then the pressure registered at the pressure measuring device 5 is a measure of the distance of the bath level from the inert gas inlet. The pressure measuring device 5 converts the registered pressure into an electrical signal and feeds this determined actual value to a comparator 6. An actuating signal is formed from the difference between a predetermined target value and the determined actual value, which is fed to an actuator 7. This actuator 7 actuates, for example, the plug 8 of a distributor 9. It is also possible to influence the withdrawal speed of the strand from the mold with the control signal.

Hierbei findet die Inertgaseinleitung in der Nähe des Ausgusses 11 oder am Grund des Verteilers 10 am Punkt 13 statt.FIG. 2 shows the possibility of using the method for determining and regulating the bath level in a distributor 10, in which the amount of metal flowing out is controlled as a function of the fill level. The inert gas is introduced near the spout 11 or at the bottom of the distributor 10 at point 13.

This introduction of inert gas is provided externally, as shown in FIG. 1, with the control and measuring devices described there. The control signal can act on the tilt angle setting of the distributor or on the pressure acting on the bath surface.

FIG. 3 shows the application of the method in spray compacting. The inert gas is introduced through the pouring stone 12 of the vessel. The ferrostatic pressure is the decisive pressure that determines the amount of melt escaping from the spout. The external supply of inert gas and the measuring and control devices are also constructed as shown in FIG. 1. In order to keep the operating parameters constant in this process, the control signal acts on the withdrawal speed of the emerging metal. *
* Since the vessel containing the molten metal is not refilled during the leakage, it is important that the inert gas introduction with the corresponding measurement of the absolute pressure and the flow rate is carried out virtually continuously during the leakage. It is necessary here that the flow rate just exceeds the value zero at every point in time at which the absolute pressure for bath level height determination is registered and evaluated.

As is clear from the individual application examples, this method for determining and regulating the bath level is simple in terms of apparatus and thus finds a wide range of applications.
