Definitions
- the invention relates to an identification card which has two data records which match in content and are applied by the same method.
- the basic need of users and issuers is that the card information is protected as much as possible against counterfeiting or falsification. For this reason, it has been proposed to provide identification cards with two data records, the contents of which at least partially match. Depending on the intended use, the data records contain information about the card user such as his name, account number, card number etc. and / or information about the issuer.
- an identification card with a double data set is known.
- this card has a first data record in the form of embossed alphanumeric characters; however, since embossed data are less valuable in terms of security, this data has been supplemented by a second data record with identical information content, the second data record being written into the map material with the high-quality laser inscription.
- the result of this procedure is a card whose easily counterfeited embossed data has been given increased protection against counterfeiting by a second data record inscribed with a laser.
- the advantage of increased protection against counterfeiting is offset by the disadvantage that the card has to go through two production stations for its manufacture, namely the embossing device and the laser marking device.
- the use of two systems results in increased production and investment costs for the card issuer; besides, it is inevitable to create a data flow between the two systems, which ensures that a card is labeled twice with matching information.
- identification cards are provided with a double data record using the same labeling method.
- duplicate data records applied using the same method only increase the security against counterfeiting very slightly.
- a forger who is able to forge the first data record can also forge the second data record using the same tools.
- the role of a secret identifier has generally been assigned to the second data record.
- the second data set is designed in such a way that it is difficult or impossible to recognize it visually without aids.
- information is accommodated in the image area of an identification card, where it blurs in front of the varying gray tones of the image for the eye, or it is repeated in an inconspicuous position on the identification card in barely recognizable micro-writing.
- the security philosophy of these cards is that a counterfeiter does not forge the secret data due to ignorance and that a counterfeit can be proven on the basis of the secret, unchanged data, although tools must be used for this.
- a disadvantage of this solution is the lack of visual recognition of a forgery or falsification of the identification card in everyday use, where it is not customary to use authenticity control aids because of the obvious compromise of the cardholder.
- the task is to provide an identification card with a second data record which, despite the same labeling method, significantly increases the security against forgery and which can also be checked visually for authenticity without aids.
- the invention has its starting point in the knowledge that a second, visually visible data record applied using the same labeling method can significantly increase the protection against counterfeiting only if the counterfeiter is confronted with increased technical complexity.
- the invention provides that individual card characteristics that are particularly worth protecting are combined into a second data set and combined with a complicated pattern.
- the data set and the pattern are interleaved in such a way that they form a unit both visually and from a safety point of view. Protection against counterfeiting is based on the property that the arrangement resulting from the tight nesting of patterns and data can only be counterfeited as a whole.
- Such difficult-to-counterfeit units result, for example, from the fact that the characters of the data record are framed individually or in groups by a closely fitting line or guilloche pattern.
- the data records and the surrounding protective pattern are applied to the identification card by laser inscription.
- Laser marking is an extremely flexible type of marking and allows not only alphanumeric characters but also to apply almost any complicated patterns such as guilloches, coats of arms, etc. to cards. This results in a large scope of design options for the present invention.
- Personal or card-specific data are particularly in need of protection on identity cards, which is why they are combined in a sentence and interleaved with the protection pattern according to the invention.
- identity card it is advisable to combine the name, address and card number into a data record, whereas with a credit card, the name and account number are preferably included in the protection pattern.
- the data record can be secured in various embodiments.
- Maximum security against counterfeiting can be achieved by combining every single character of the data record with protective lines, for example, each digit of an account number can be provided with its own line. If more emphasis is placed on easy readability, it is advisable to surround words or numbers as a whole with a protective pattern. In extreme cases, the entire data set is protected with only one pattern.
- Patterns known from the securities sector such as guilloches, but also stamp-shaped patterns, decorative strips, etc., are particularly suitable.
- guilloches can be designed so that alphanumeric characters, such as the digits of an account number, can be placed in the open loops.
- all cards in a series are preferably provided with identical cards Protection patterns.
- the data records have different lengths, as occurs, for example, in the card holders' names, then it is more advantageous to individually coordinate the shape of the protective pattern.
- the nesting of the data with a close-fitting pattern has the major advantage of improved protection of the data against manipulation. If one refrains from total counterfeiting, which is particularly difficult due to the protective pattern and the micro relief, then the attempted counterfeiting of ID cards consists either in adding or replacing one character with another or in adding or removing characters. Regarding the addition and replacement of characters, it should be noted that this forgery variant requires measures to remove the correct characters or parts thereof. Now, however, most measures for removing characters, such as the use of solvents or temperature, cannot be limited locally, but also affect the environment. As a result, the pattern in the immediate vicinity of the characters is also damaged, making the attempt to forge the characters obvious to the layperson.
- the pattern prevents almost any meaningful attempt at forgery.
- the surrounding pattern does not leave enough space for an inconspicuous addition due to its close-fitting design, while removal of a character through the resulting empty spaces indicates an attempted forgery.
- the invention offers the advantage that both the two data sets and the protection pattern can be carried out in one operation on a machine system.
- An immediate one The impact of labeling on a system is constant investment costs for card production.
- Another advantage of labeling on only one system results from the low local tolerance with which the protective pattern and the associated data set can be arranged locally with respect to one another. Since all operations are carried out on one machine, there is no need for any adjustment and set-up procedures, so the assignment of the protection pattern to the data is only determined by the precision of the system itself. Because of their low tolerances, today's labeling systems make it possible to draw the protection pattern extremely close to the data record to be protected and to optimally protect the data against attempts to falsify it. In addition, the high precision ensures a consistent and thus memorable appearance, which makes it easier to identify counterfeits.
- the card 1 shown in Fig. 1 is a multi-layer laminated ID card with outer cover layers and an ticking.
- Various data records 2, 3 and 4 were burned into the upper cover layer and the ticking with a laser marking device.
- the name 2 and account number 3 of the cardholder represent the personal data.
- information about the publisher and the intended use, which is not shown, can be applied to the card.
- account number 3 represents the data record that is particularly worth protecting, which is why it is repeated in a ring-shaped arrangement 4 on the left half of the card.
- a complex two-part guilloche rosette 5a, 5b is burned in by laser inscription around this second data record 4 in such a way that the loops of the rosette 5a envelop the individual digits of the account number 4.
- the loops are designed so that they come much closer than the typical character size to the digits of the account number;
- the rosette and account number form a visual whole.
- a second rosette 5b was applied in the middle.
- the guilloches 5a, 5b are shown in simplified form in the figure.
- any other card-specific data such as the name of the holder, the period of validity, etc. can of course be written into the loops of the guilloche rosette.
- the protection pattern and the double data set can be displayed in diverse variations according to the design and the protective effect; For example, circular, star-shaped, linear and other arrangements can be generated for the data set.
- the protective pattern can be constructed from a coherent pattern or from different parts.
- the pattern is preferably introduced in a constant form via the card series.
- the protection pattern there are advantages in individually adapting the protection pattern to the data.
- the 2 also shows a multi-layer identification card 1, in the top layer of which personal data 2, 13 and 14 are lasered.
- a multi-layer identification card in the top layer of which personal data 2, 13 and 14 are lasered.
- there may be information not shown on the card such as information about the publisher.
- the name of the cardholder is representative of data record 2 that is particularly worth protecting, which is why it was registered a second time as double data record 14 in the lower third of the card.
- the individual words are each encased by a guilloche pattern 15a, 15b, again shown in simplified form. The loops of the pattern extend to the immediate vicinity of the characters, protecting them from counterfeiting.
- the guilloches are designed so that the two names are in the inner surface 16a, b of the pattern.
- the length of the inner surfaces 16a, b is individually matched to the length of the respective data, so that there is only little free space at the beginning and at the end of a word.
- the guilloche pattern is preferably designed so that it produces a characteristic overall impression regardless of its length. This effect can be achieved, for example, by repeating the individual loops uniformly over the length of the guilloche until one has reached the end of the word.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an identification card which has two data records which match in content and are applied by the same method.
When producing ID cards, the basic need of users and issuers is that the card information is protected as much as possible against counterfeiting or falsification. For this reason, it has been proposed to provide identification cards with two data records, the contents of which at least partially match. Depending on the intended use, the data records contain information about the card user such as his name, account number, card number etc. and / or information about the issuer.
From DE-PS 32 48 784 an identification card with a double data set is known. In order to be able to use it as a printing block, this card has a first data record in the form of embossed alphanumeric characters; however, since embossed data are less valuable in terms of security, this data has been supplemented by a second data record with identical information content, the second data record being written into the map material with the high-quality laser inscription. The result of this procedure is a card whose easily counterfeited embossed data has been given increased protection against counterfeiting by a second data record inscribed with a laser.
The advantage of increased protection against counterfeiting is offset by the disadvantage that the card has to go through two production stations for its manufacture, namely the embossing device and the laser marking device. The use of two systems results in increased production and investment costs for the card issuer; besides, it is inevitable to create a data flow between the two systems, which ensures that a card is labeled twice with matching information.
In other known embodiments, identification cards are provided with a double data record using the same labeling method. According to the generally held view, however, duplicate data records applied using the same method only increase the security against counterfeiting very slightly. A forger who is able to forge the first data record can also forge the second data record using the same tools. For this reason, the role of a secret identifier has generally been assigned to the second data record. H. The second data set is designed in such a way that it is difficult or impossible to recognize it visually without aids. For this purpose, for example, information is accommodated in the image area of an identification card, where it blurs in front of the varying gray tones of the image for the eye, or it is repeated in an inconspicuous position on the identification card in barely recognizable micro-writing. The security philosophy of these cards is that a counterfeiter does not forge the secret data due to ignorance and that a counterfeit can be proven on the basis of the secret, unchanged data, although tools must be used for this.
A disadvantage of this solution is the lack of visual recognition of a forgery or falsification of the identification card in everyday use, where it is not customary to use authenticity control aids because of the obvious compromise of the cardholder.
Proceeding from this prior art, the task is to provide an identification card with a second data record which, despite the same labeling method, significantly increases the security against forgery and which can also be checked visually for authenticity without aids.
The object is achieved by the features mentioned in the characterizing part of the main claim. Advantageous further developments can be found in the subclaims.
The invention has its starting point in the knowledge that a second, visually visible data record applied using the same labeling method can significantly increase the protection against counterfeiting only if the counterfeiter is confronted with increased technical complexity. As a solution, the invention provides that individual card characteristics that are particularly worth protecting are combined into a second data set and combined with a complicated pattern. The data set and the pattern are interleaved in such a way that they form a unit both visually and from a safety point of view. Protection against counterfeiting is based on the property that the arrangement resulting from the tight nesting of patterns and data can only be counterfeited as a whole.
Such difficult-to-counterfeit units result, for example, from the fact that the characters of the data record are framed individually or in groups by a closely fitting line or guilloche pattern.
In a preferred embodiment, the data records and the surrounding protective pattern are applied to the identification card by laser inscription. Laser marking is an extremely flexible type of marking and allows not only alphanumeric characters but also to apply almost any complicated patterns such as guilloches, coats of arms, etc. to cards. This results in a large scope of design options for the present invention. For laser marking and their embodiments, reference is made to DE-PS 29 07 004.
Personal or card-specific data are particularly in need of protection on identity cards, which is why they are combined in a sentence and interleaved with the protection pattern according to the invention. In the case of an identity card, it is advisable to combine the name, address and card number into a data record, whereas with a credit card, the name and account number are preferably included in the protection pattern.
Depending on the desired level of security against counterfeiting and the appearance, the data record can be secured in various embodiments. Maximum security against counterfeiting can be achieved by combining every single character of the data record with protective lines, for example, each digit of an account number can be provided with its own line. If more emphasis is placed on easy readability, it is advisable to surround words or numbers as a whole with a protective pattern. In extreme cases, the entire data set is protected with only one pattern.
Practically all patterns in which characters, words or data records can be embedded can be used as backup patterns. Patterns known from the securities sector, such as guilloches, but also stamp-shaped patterns, decorative strips, etc., are particularly suitable. In particular, guilloches can be designed so that alphanumeric characters, such as the digits of an account number, can be placed in the open loops. In order to maintain a uniform overall impression, all cards in a series are preferably provided with identical cards Protection patterns. However, if the data records have different lengths, as occurs, for example, in the card holders' names, then it is more advantageous to individually coordinate the shape of the protective pattern.
Was das Hinzufügen bzw. The nesting of the data with a close-fitting pattern has the major advantage of improved protection of the data against manipulation. As far as adding or removing characters is concerned, the pattern prevents almost any meaningful attempt at forgery. The surrounding pattern does not leave enough space for an inconspicuous addition due to its close-fitting design, while removal of a character through the resulting empty spaces indicates an attempted forgery.
From an economic point of view, the invention offers the advantage that both the two data sets and the protection pattern can be carried out in one operation on a machine system. An immediate one The impact of labeling on a system is constant investment costs for card production. In addition, there is almost no additional organizational effort for the double provision and correct assignment of the data to a card. For example, in the case of laser marking, it is possible to convert an existing system to the production of the cards according to the invention only by means of software measures.
Another advantage of labeling on only one system results from the low local tolerance with which the protective pattern and the associated data set can be arranged locally with respect to one another.

- Fig. 1
- a supervisory ID card in which the account number is protected by a constant guilloche pattern,
- Fig. 2
- a supervisory ID card, in which the name of the card holder is protected by a variable decorative pattern.
The
Instead of the account number, as shown above, any other card-specific data such as the name of the holder, the period of validity, etc. can of course be written into the loops of the guilloche rosette. In general, the protection pattern and the double data set can be displayed in diverse variations according to the design and the protective effect; For example, circular, star-shaped, linear and other arrangements can be generated for the data set. The protective pattern can be constructed from a coherent pattern or from different parts.
If data of constant length or shape are to be protected, the pattern is preferably introduced in a constant form via the card series. With varying amounts of data, on the other hand, there are advantages in individually adapting the protection pattern to the data.
