Definitions
- the invention relates to a starting device for internal combustion engines, in particular large internal combustion engines, of the type defined in the preamble of claim 1.
- the two switching contacts a direct electrical connection of the drive motors to the vehicle electrical system produce.
- the switches actuated by the two pinions or engagement relays at the end of the engagement process each have a switch contact.
- the starter switch is closed, the engagement relay of one starter is connected to the vehicle electrical system.
- the switch contact of the assigned switch closes and ensures a direct current flow in the engagement relay of the other starter.
- the engagement relay also engages the starter pinion in the ring gear of the internal combustion engine. If this starter pinion is also engaged, the two parallel excitation windings of the start double relay are supplied with direct current via the now also closed switching contact of the assigned switch, so that its two relay contacts close.
- the starting device according to the invention with the characterizing features of claim 1 has the advantage that the start double relay and corresponding
- the usual switches with a single switch contact must be replaced by a switch with a double contact
- the single switch contacts of the two switches each associated with a starter must be designed for double the current load, since the current for both, connected in parallel - drive motors over the two one behind the other
- Fig. 1 is a circuit diagram of a starter and 2 with two starters operated in parallel for an internal combustion engine according to a first and second embodiment.
- the starting device for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle shown in the circuit diagram in FIG. 1 has two starters 11, 12 working in parallel. 13 denotes the motor vehicle battery, 14 a battery switch, 0 15 a travel switch and 16 a start switch for starting the internal combustion engine. If the battery switch 14 and the travel switch 15 are closed, the two starters 11, 12 can be switched on by actuating the start switch 16
- Each starter 11 or 12 has, in addition to the drive motor 17 c or 18, an engagement relay for driving the starter pinion 19 b between 20 with at least one relay winding 21, 22. With direct current flowing in the relay winding 21 or 22, the engagement relay 19 or 20 picks up and pushes the starter pinion into the ring gear of the internal combustion engine.
- a possible structural design of the starter 11 or 12 is described for example in DE-OS 31 00, 869. For better engagement of the starter pinion in the ring gear of the internal combustion engine, the starter pinion is slowly rotated when the pinion gear is advanced against the ring gear.
- this can be achieved mechanically by screwing the pinion on a gear shaft, but also - as here - electrically by means of a low current flow in the drive motor 17 or 18, which is achieved here via a second relay winding 23 or 24 of the engaging relay 19 or 20 takes place. If the starter pinion can fully mesh into the ring gear of the internal combustion engine, the engagement relay 19 or 20 pulls the relay armature in completely and closes a switch 25 or 26 at the end of the pull-in movement, which then connects the drive motor 17 or 18 directly to the motor vehicle battery 13 .
- each switch 25, 26 has a double contact, consisting of the switch contacts 27, 28 and 29, 30, respectively.
- the switch contact 27 of the switch 25 and the switch contact 30 of the switch 26 are connected in series and are in series with the
- the relay windings 21, 22 of the two engagement relays 19 are connected in parallel to one another and are connected directly to the battery 13 via the relay contact 31 of an auxiliary relay 32.
- Auxiliary relay 32 is supplied with power when the start switch 16 is actuated, specifically via a known start inhibitor 34 and start repeater 35.
- the second relay windings 23 and 24 are each in series with the series winding 36 and 37 of the associated, as
- the described starting device works as follows:
- the engaging relays 19, 20 push the respectively assigned starter pinions in the direction of the ring gear of the internal combustion engine, the starter pinions being set into slow rotation via the associated drive motors 17, 18.
- the switching contacts 27 and 28 close. If the starter 12 starter pinion is not yet engaged, nothing happens. Only after complete engagement of the starter pinion 12, its engagement relay 20 can close the two switching contacts 29, 30 of the switch 26. At this moment both drive motors 17, 18 are closed via the double contacts the switch 25, 26 connected in parallel to the battery 13.
- the drive motors 17, 18 run up and rotate the internal combustion engine via the starting pinions.
- one starter 11 or 12 is thus locked against the other starter 12 or 11 until both pinions are engaged in the ring gear of the internal combustion engine. If one of the starter pinions cannot engage in a tooth to tooth position, the start repeater relay 35 responds and repeats the starting process as described for both starters 11, 12 without the travel switch 15 having to be opened and closed again.
- the starter device shown in the circuit diagram in FIG. 2 is modified compared to the starter device in FIG. 1 only in the manner of locking the two starters 11, 12 against one another with at least one starter pinion not engaged.
- the switches 25 'and 26 "of the engaging relays 19, 20 are equipped with only a single switch contact 38, 39, which, however, is designed for twice the current load as the switch contacts 27 - 30 in FIG. 1.
- the two switch contacts 38, 39 of Switches 25 ', 26' are connected in series and then connected to the motor vehicle battery 13 in series with the parallel connection of the two drive motors 17, 18

Abstract
In a starting device comprising two starters (11, 12) operating in parallel, in order to ensure the engagement of the drive motors (17, 18) responsible for driving the starting pinions, the relay windings (21, 22) engagement relays (19, 20) advancing the starter gears are switched in parallel only after meshing of said gears and in such a way that they are simultaneously energized when actuating the start switch (16 ). After total engagement of the starting gears, switching contacts (27-30) are actuated in each starter (11, 12), switching contacts (27, 30, 28, 29) belonging to two different starters (11, 12 ) being switched consecutively and in series with a drive motor (17 or 18 respectively). The engagement of the drive motors (17, 18) is thus locked as long as one of the two starter gears is not engaged.
