Abstract

A reclining seat back assembly for a wheelchair (10) includes a frame member (36) having a pair of side posts (42) pivotally connected to the wheelchair chassis (12). Each side post (42) has a rearwardly extending handle (52) at its upper end. A pair of extendable struts (62) each include a hollow outer strut (64) member pivotally connected to the chassis (12) and an inner strut (66) member pivotally connected to one of the side posts (42) and received in the outer strut member (64). The struts (62) contract as the seat back (34) is pivoted toward a reclined position and extend as the seat back (34) is pivoted toward an upright position. Mounted on each outer strut (64) member is a locking mechanism that includes an engaging member (84) having a first engaging surface (82) with a profile complementary to a second engaging surface (86) on the lower end of the inner strut member (66). A spring (90) biases each engaging member (84) into engagement with its respective inner strut member (66). The engaging members (84) are released from the inner strut members (66) by actuating levers (104) mounted on the side posts (42) immediately beneath the handles (52). The actuating levers (104) are connected to the engaging members (84) by Bowden cable assemblies (108). In addition, the seat back is urged toward the upright position by a pair of spring-loaded link assemblies (122) each having a lower end pivotally connected to the wheelchair chassis (12) and an upper end pivotally connected to a lever arm (120) extending from the lower end of a side post (42).
