Abstract
The rotor (1) of a pressure wave machine has cells (6) on its circumference, which are curved from the two end faces of the rotor (1) inwards towards its center and towards the rotor axis. As a result, the absolute path of a particle runs practically rectilinearly from its entry point (7) into a cell (6) to its exit point (8), which means that the mixing zone between the two media involved in the pressure wave process, and thus the flushing losses compared to straight cells, is strong in the rinsing process can be reduced.
Description
The present invention relates to a rotor of a pressure wave machine with cells distributed uniformly around its circumference and oriented parallel to the rotor axis and intended to hold two gaseous media during operation in order to compress the first by pressure waves from the second medium.
In pressure wave machines, when used as a supercharger for internal combustion engines, ambient air is further compressed to charge air and when used as a high-pressure compressor stage of a gas turbine, compressed air is further compressed to produce propellant gas for the high-pressure turbine part. The compression of the air takes place in a rotor, the scope of which, in today's designs, generally has axially parallel cells in which the air comes into direct contact with the exhaust gas from the engine or with propellant gas branched off from the turbine combustion chamber without a fixed separating element. To control the inlets and outlets of air and gas into and out of the cells, housings with channels for the supply and / or discharge of the two media involved in the pressure wave process are located on the two end faces of the rotor. If a cell filled with air to be compressed comes in front of a high-pressure gas inlet, a pressure wave runs into the cell and compresses the air. The pressure wave reaches the end of the cell as soon as it passes through the high pressure air outlet. The air is pushed out there and the cell is then completely filled with gas. When turning further, expansion waves ensure that the gas leaves the cell and that fresh air is sucked in and the compression process is repeated.
A critical factor for the delivery level of a pressure wave loader is that the interface between the two media air and gas is by no means perpendicular to the channel axis, but that a more or less wide mixing zone is formed, which on the one hand results in the flushing of the compressed air Gas in the engine or in the turbine circuit and on the other hand some of the air passes into the gas.
The foregoing also results from the known fact that in a channel in which two media of different densities are initially separated from one another by a membrane, when this membrane is removed, apart from the complete mixing of the two gaseous media, as in the idle state occurs, a compensating flow sets in, with stationary media under the influence of gravity.
In the case of a pressure wave machine, the heavier medium, namely air, is pushed by the centrifugal acceleration on the outside of the cell under the lighter exhaust gas from the engine with the consequence of a very wide mixing zone compared to the idle state, which, as mentioned, the purging and thus the delivery rate of the loader deteriorates.
The invention arose from the task of designing the geometry of the rotor of a pressure wave machine operated with media of different densities, in particular the shape of its cells, in such a way that no centrifugal forces act on the fluid in the cell in the charging cycle, and thus centrifugal currents which affect the input cause harmful mixtures of the fluids mentioned things to be avoided. This is achieved by designing the cells in such a way that the medium particles move from their entry into the cells until they exit them on practically straight-line absolute paths, that is to say on paths that are regarded as straight paths by an observer outside the rotor be seen. This removes the particles from the influence of the acceleration forces. This task is solved by a shape of the channel axes of the cells which is curved towards the rotor axis.
The pressure wave machine according to the invention is characterized in that the channel axes of the cells between their two end cross sections on the rotor end faces run radially inwards, curved towards the rotor axis, the shape of the channel axes of the cells between their two end cross sections of the function
r (x) = r₀cos (φ / 2) / cos [φ (1/2 - x / L)]
follows, where r₀ is the radial distance of the channel axes from the rotor axis, φ is the angle that a cell travels from the entry point of the first medium at one rotor end to its exit point at the other rotor end, and L is the rotor length, with the x-axis also the rotor axis coincides and has its origin on the end face of the rotor at which the first medium enters.
The invention is described in more detail below with reference to the drawing.

- 2 shows the shape of a cell of such a rotor.
In Figure 1, the direction of rotation of the
For better clarity, the rotor is only partially and schematically in FIG. 1 through its
r(x) = r₀cos(φ/2)/cos[φ(1/2 - x/L)]
und der Betrag der Durchsenkung durch
Δr = r₀[1 - cos (φ/2)].The angle φ, which is particularly important for the shape of the
r (x) = r₀cos (φ / 2) / cos [φ (1/2 - x / L)]
and the amount of sagging through
Δr = r₀ [1 - cos (φ / 2)].
These two expressions give approximate values for the shape of the channel axis and for Δ, which differ practically no dimensionally and in effect from corresponding values obtained from mathematically determined exact formulas. The differences are only in the area of measurement accuracy.
φ = 51⁰.The constriction by Δr in the middle of the rotor essentially depends on the entry or exit point of the separating front between the hot gas and the compressed air, the pressure ratio and the number of floods of the machine. “Flood” here means the entirety of the inlet and outlet channels of the two cooperating media that are required for a complete pressure wave cycle. Most machines, in particular pressure wave loaders for engine charging, are double-flow, so two pressure wave cycles take place with one rotor revolution. In such a machine with a pressure ratio of two, for example, φ = 51⁰.
With the cell geometry given by r (x), a nearly linear path is thus imprinted on a particle in the cells with the result required by the task of the invention of keeping the mixing zone between the two media as short as possible and free of mixing. Coriolis forces in this system are an order of magnitude smaller than the centrifugal forces and, if necessary, could be corrected by asymmetrically bending the cell in the azimuthal direction, which is not sensible here for manufacturing reasons.
The influence of the centrifugal flows on the rinsing cycle is also partially reduced by the shape of the cells according to the invention. This influence of centrifugal flow on the purge can be further reduced by further increasing the constriction of the rotor by the amount given by the formula for r (x). However, this does not make sense either, as this overcompensates the charging cycle and thus worsens it somewhat.
Given a constant cross-sectional area of the channels over the entire length of the cell, the radial cell walls could be made increasingly thicker in both directions starting from the center of the rotor and thereby profiling their ends in a flow-favorable manner. However, it has been shown that this only makes sense for the entry side, while the swirl area is enlarged on the exit side and the efficiency is impaired compared to a design with ends of the cell walls that have sharp edges on both sides.
