Abstract
A sash lock, particularly for sashes fabricated from hollow extruded metal sectional members or plastics moldings, comprising a box-type body (8) which is secured inside a recess (6) in the sash upright (1), is provided with a pair of oppositely located lugs (21,22) integral with the box-type body (8) and being each formed with a respective threaded hole (23,24) accessible from outside the upright.
The handle (25) for operating the sash is mounted by means of screw fasteners (26,27) engaging in the threaded holes (23,24) of said lugs.
Thus, the benefits of a reliable connection are obtained which can be implemented between the handle and the sash in a rapid manner.
Description
- This invention relates to a sash lock, such as used on door and window sashes, being of a type which is fabricated from either extruded metal sectional members or plastics moldings and provided with means of mounting a handle or knob for operation of the sash.
- As is known, such locks are housed in a purposely provided recess in the vertical upright of a sash constituting a door or window, and secured in said recess by screws which are passed through extensions of the lock front plate and engage in respective tapped holes provided in the back wall of the sectional member, or molding, proximate to the recess edges.
- A screw mounting of such a kind, while being regarded as adequate to secure the lock on the sash -- despite the thickness of the wall in which the screws, which may be on occasions of the self-tapping variety, engage being small -- problems of steadiness and long life of the fastening arrangement arise in connection with the handle or knob whereby the sash is operated.
- Such a handle being expected to transfer a force of significant magnitude when the sash is swung about its hinges or slid along specially provided rails, depending on which design is used, requires to be secured on the upright in a generally more robust and effective way than that provided by self-tapping screws biting in so thin a wall as is bound to be that of a metal sectional member, or plastics molding, of hollow construction.
- It is current practice to provide for the handle a reliable anchor to the upright by using expansion clips arranged to rest on the inner surface of the hollow member wall, or where the sash is accessible on both sides, by means of threaded ties which are passed through the thickness of the sectional member or molding and secured on both sides thereof.
- Such known technologies have self-evident drawbacks in the need to employ, in the former instance, special fastening devices and to have, in the latter instance, access to the opposed side of the sash or to provide the sash with another handle on said opposed side.
- It is the object of this invention to obviate the above-noted drawbacks and provide a simple and flexible solution to the problem of attaching an operation handle to a sash of the kind specified above.
- This object is achieved, according to this invention, by a lock which comprises a box-type body enclosing the lock mechanism and being adapted for fitting and securing inside a recess in the sash upright, being characterized in that said box-type body is provided with a pair of coplanar lugs located at opposite locations from each other and each formed with at least one hole accessible from outside the upright for threaded engagement therein of a respective mounting screw member of a sash operation handle.
- The invention will be described in greater detail with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof, shown in the accompanying illustrative and non-limitative drawing, the single figure whereof illustrates, in a schematic perspective view, the basic features of a lock according to the invention.
- With reference to the accompanying drawing, the
numeral 1 designates a portion of a sectional member or molding arranged to form the vertical upright of a sash, in particular the moving part of it, in either the forms of a casement or sliding window, or of a swing or sliding door. - That sectional member or molding, which is well-known per se, has opposing
walls - Housed in a specially provided
recess 6, which is accessible through anaperture 7 provided in the front wall 4 of the sectional member or molding, is the box-type body 8 of the lock. - That
body 8 contains the conventional mechanism of a lock for operating thebolt 9, e.g. by rotation of a hollowsquare pin 10 in which thetang 11, having a complementary cross-sectional shape, of acontrol knob 12 is adapted to fit. - The double-headed arrow F indicates the directions of movement of the
knob 12 to operate the bolt. - The box-
type body 8 of the lock is conventionally provided with afront plate 13 which extends somewhat beyond the box-type body with terminatingportions hole 16 for arespective screw 17 to pass through. - The terminating
portions opening 7, and the locklock mounting screws 17 intended to be engaged in respective threadedholes 18 in the front wall 4 of the sectional member or molding. - In accordance with this invention, the lock box-
type body 8 is provided, onopposed sides respective coplanar lugs holes - The
lugs type body 8, and accordingly, the respective threadedholes - A handle, schematically indicated at 25, can be mounted by engaging the
screws holes handle plate 30, in the threadedholes lugs aperture 31 formed in thewall 2 of the sectional member or molding. - In this way, a reliable anchoring arrangement is obtained which may be provided, as required, on one or both sides of the sash.
