Abstract

A ceramic cooker hob in which a ceramic glass hob top 1 is mounted in a panel 2 of pressed sheet metal for example steel having a shallow flat bottomed recess to receive the ceramic glass. The bottom of the recess has cutout portions for the heaters to be positioned below the hob. The hob top may be fixed into the mounting panel with a gap filling adhesive.

Description

  • The invention relates to ceramic cooker hobs. Such hobs normally consist of a hob top comprising a plate of ceramic glass held in a metal mounting, usually comprising a frame fabricated from aluminium extrusions or rolled steel sections. The ceramic glass sheet may be secured in the frame by a gap-filling adhesive, thereby avoiding the formation of a dirt trap at the edge of the sheet.
  • An object of the present invention, which is defined in the appended claims, is to provide an alternative construction for a ceramic cooker hob which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, which is particularly adapted for use with halogen-type heater elements in that it reduces the escape of stray light, and which, in some cases, permits a thinner ceramic plate to be used.
  • The invention will be further described with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical section through a ceramic cooker hob according to the invention showing apertures for heater elements.
  • The cooker hob shown in the drawing comprises a ceramic glass sheet 1 forming the hob top mounted in a panel 2 pressed from sheet steel. The upper surface of the panel has a shallow recess large enough to accommodate the ceramic sheet, and having a flat bottom 3, so forming a shallow tray. In the bottom of this tray cutouts 4 and 5 are formed below which, when the cooker hob is fully assembled will be placed the heating elements which may comprise spiral resistive heaters, or preferably, radiant heaters of the halogen type.
  • The ceramic glass sheet 1 rests on spacers 6 which are provided at intervals under the edges of the ceramic glass sheet, and preferably also in the central region between the heater apertures 4, 5. The groove round the edge of the ceramic glass plate is filled with a gap-filling adhesive, as shown at 7.
  • The sheet steel pressing 2 is relatively inexpensive to produce, does not require time to be spent on assembly, and does not have corner joints which could act as dirt traps. The tray-like bottom of the recess obstructs stray light from the heaters, particularly if halogen type heaters are used, so that light from them is not visible outside the area of the hob ring itself. Furthermore, the additional support provided by this construction means that in some cases a thinner plate of ceramic glass may be used, for example 3 millimetres thick instead of the 4 millimetre thickness commonly now employed.

Claims (4)

1. A ceramic cooker hob comprising a ceramic glass hob top mounted in a single panel of pressed sheet metal formed with a flat-bottomed recess to accommodate the ceramic glass hob top, the recessed portion having cutouts at the positions of the heating elements.
2. A ceramic cooker hob according to claim 1 in which the sheet metal panel is of steel.
3. A ceramic cooker hob according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the gap between the edges of the ceramic glass hob top and the mounting panel are filled with a gap-filling adhesive.
4. A ceramic cooker hob according to any preceding claim in combination with halogen heaters positioned below the cutouts, the cutouts being so shaped and dimensioned that radiation from the heaters reaches the hob top but is not visible at regions substantially removed from the cooker ring areas.
