Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to a marker for identifying the location of seeds, seedlings or the like, and particularly to a seed or plant marker which is adapted to retain the empty seed packet or other indicia-bearing member to provide an identification of the seeding location when inserted into the ground in juxtaposition therewith.
- the marker of the present invention may also be used as an identification label for indicating the species of plant or other vegetative matter in juxtaposition with which it is placed.
- the present invention provides means by which cultivation instructions may also be provided in close proximity to the plants to which they relate.
- a marker for identifying the location of seeds, seedlings, plants or other purposes comprises an enclosure of substantially water-impermeable material for receiving a marker element of indicia-bearing material, and ground-penetrating means for retaining the enclosure in position, projecting from the surface of the ground, with the enclosure in a downwardly open orientation.
- the enclosure may be rigid or flexible, and the indicia-bearing material may comprise the seed packet itself.
- Embodiments of the invention adapted to receive a seed packet or other substrate bearing indicia representing the seeds the location of which is to be marked by the marker device may include a rigid reinforcement member or may be provided with means for receiving a reinforcement member. In either embodiment the reinforcement member preferably also constitues the ground penetration member.
- a marker for identifying the location of seeds, seedlings or for other purposes comprises a substantially water-impermeable enclosure for receiving a seed packet or other printed or otherwise marked material, and means for retaining the enclosure at a selected location in a selected orientation.
- Such means may include a rigid reinforcement member which can be introduced into the soil so as to project from the surface of the ground.
- the enclosure-retaining means preferably, therefore, comprises such a reinforcement member associated with the said enclosure.
- the reinforcement member may be elongate, in which case the enclosure preferably has a pocket of appropriate shape to receive a part thereof.
- the ground penetrating enclosure-retaining means may comprise a reinforcement member constituting a part of the marker, and in this case the reinforcement member may be integrally formed with the enclosure or may be connected or joined thereto to form a fabricated structure.
- the enclosure may be opaque or transparent, and embodiments having an opaque enclosure may be provided with a transparent window through which a part of the marking indicia representing the seeds or seedlings may be visible.
- the enclosure has at least one wall or panel at least a part of which is transparent. If all of the said at least one wall is transparent it may be a wall of an integral enclosure or may be attached to a transparent or opaque wall forming a chamber of the enclosure with the said one wall.
- the said enclosure comprises two main parallel walls or panels secured together around the majority of the periphery thereof leaving an opening to allow access for the introduction of a seed packet or other substrate bearing seed-representative indicia.
- a seed marker comprising a substantially flexible sac-like container 11 of rectangular form comprising two main flat panels 12, 13 joined around their outer periphery along three sides 14, 15, 16 and open at a fourth side 17.
- Parallel to the side 16 a welded or other connection is made extending from the side 15 to the side 17, and identified by the reference line 18 which separates the container 11 into two chambers 19, 20 the latter of which receives an elongate rigid reinforcement member 21 which is secured in place by adhesive or welding as represented by 22.
- a used or partly used seed packet 23 is introduced through the opening defined along the edges 17 into the interior chamber 19, where it can be retained by friction or by suitable retaining means, adhesive or other fasteners.
- the flexible container 12 is made of a transparent material such as polyethylene.
- FIG. 2 there is shown an alternative embodiment comprising a rectangular sac-like flexible container 24 having an open end 25 into which can be introduced a rigid reinforcing member 26 having a tapered end 27 which can be introduced into the soil.
- the container 24 is of dimensions such that when fitted over the reinforcement member 26 it is held in place by friction, and can receive a folded seed packet 28 or other substrate bearing indicia representing the seeds marked by the location of the marker. Alternatively one face of the container 24 may be secured in place by adhesive or by fasteners of any type.
- Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment comprising a rigid rectangular base member 29 having a tapered end 30 for introduction into the soil.
- a flexible sheet 31 is secured to a major face of the support 29 by welding or adhesive around three edges 32, 33, 34 leaving an edge 35 for the introduction of a substrate held in place by friction or other retaining means.
- the panel 31 is opaque and has a transparent window 36 through which indicia representing the seeds or seedlings marked by the marker can be seen.
- Figure 4 illustrates a further embodiment of the invention comprising an integrally moulded rigid elongate member 40 made of substantially rigid transparent plastics material.
- the member 40 comprises a flat rigid spine or reinforcement member 41 parallel to and spaced from which is a flat laminar panel 42 which defines between itself and the reinforcement member 41 a narrow space closed by opposite parallel edges 44, 45 which join the panel 42 to the reinforcement member 41, and closed at the top by a similar edge wall 46.
- the space between the panel 42 and the reinforcement member 41, the size of which is determined by the width of the side walls 44, 45 and end wall 46 is sufficiently great to allow a marker card or folded seed packet to be introduced into it to be retained therein by friction.
- a small lip 47 formed in this embodiment as a slight inspissation of the panel 42 adjacent its lower open end opposite the end wall 46 serves as additional retention means to hold a marker card or folded seed packet in position.
- the reinforcement member 41 projects beyond the open end of the container defined by itself and the panel 42, and has a tapered end 43 to facilitate ground penetration.
- the interior faces of one or other (but not both) of the panel 42 or the reinforcement 41 which face into the interior space 48 defined thereby may be roughened to increase frictional contact. Such roughening, however, reduces the transparency of the material and since a primary function of the marker is to display indicia written or otherwise marked on a card or other marker member held within the space 48 it is important that at least one of the two faces be entirely transparent.
- Figure 6 illustrates an embodiment similar to that of Figures 4 and 5, in which additional protection against the ingress of moisture, which may happen for example by splashing in heavy rain, is provided by a closable flap 51 adhesively or otherwise secured to the reinforcement member 41 and formed with a fastener 52 for closure against the front panel 42.
- the flap 51 may be tucked inside the opening into the interior space 48, in which case this space, defined by the internal faces of the reinforcement 41 and panel 42 may be wider than in the embodiment of Figures 4 and 5 since frictional retention of a marker card or folded seed packet within the interior space 48 is not required as the stiffness of the flap 51 holds it in position and also retains any marker card, slip of paper or folded seed packet.
- the embodiment of Figure 7 is similar to that of the embodiment of Figures 4 and 5, but in this case the front panel 62 has a greater width and the ground penetrating tapered end 43 is formed as a projection of the rear wall 41.
