Description

The invention relates to a ring detonator in a projectile ammunition consisting of a projectile and a sleeve, in particular a rifle cartridge, with a hollow ignition ring receiving an ignition means, the ignition ring having a substantially U-shaped, axially aligned cross-section, the inner leg and preferably the bottom thereof the outer leg are reinforced.

Firearms or the like arranged laterally next to the loading space or a radially penetrating ignition pin into the loading space. require ammunition equipped with circumferential fuses, as is known from EP-A-255 996. There the circumferential fuse is accommodated in an annular groove in the head part of the sleeve, the inner leg of the annular groove forming a socket for the projectile.

However, this known ring igniter can be filled with ignition means only with great difficulty and therefore entails a considerable manufacturing outlay. In addition, the projectile used in the cartridge case is used as an abutment, whereby a special design of the cartridge case is required to or the like by the firing pin. to be able to actually use the applied ignition energy to squeeze the ignition means and not to make it ineffective due to excessive deformation work.

Apart from the additional effort involved, this configuration of the abutment depends on the respective cartridge and the positioning of the ring fuse is predetermined, which considerably complicates the adaptation of the ring fuse ammunition to the respective ignition systems of different firearms.

The invention is therefore based on the object to remedy these deficiencies and to create a ring fuse of the type described, which can be produced rationally, ensures a largely free use of the actual design of the cartridge, and also offers full functional reliability in cartridges with plastic sleeves.

The invention solves this problem in that the ring fuse is inserted within the sleeve receiving a propellant charge at a distance from the projectile. This simple open ignition ring can be manufactured economically and easily filled. In addition, with its reinforced inner leg and the reinforced bottom, which further increases the resulting rigidity, it itself forms the abutment required for the ignition process and the remaining outer leg, which can be particularly thin-walled, additionally facilitates the squeezing of the ignition means by an ignition pin. The ignition ring can be used without a third-party abutment and is suitable for a wide variety of cartridges and ammunition types with or without plastic sleeves, and its position is largely free depending on the ignition system of the associated firearms can be chosen. The ignition ring can also be used with its open side in or against the direction of the shot in order to influence the combustion process when igniting and burning off the propellant charge, with the open ignition ring also ensuring immediate and uniform ignition of the propellant charge on the circumference.

If the ignition ring is made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy and the thickness of the inner leg and, if applicable, of the base corresponds approximately to twice the thickness of the outer leg, a resistant, functionally reliable ring igniter results in a particularly economical manner.

In the drawing, the subject matter of the invention is illustrated, for example, with the aid of a cartridge shown in axial section with a ring igniter according to the invention.

A cartridge 1 has a projectile 2 and a sleeve 4 receiving a propellant charge 3. The cartridge 1 is equipped with a ring detonator 5, which consists of an ignition ring 6 with a U-shaped cross section and an ignition means 7 pressed into the cavity of the U-shaped cross section. The inner leg 6a and the bottom 6b of the ignition ring 6 are reinforced with respect to the outer leg 6c, so that the inner leg 6a and bottom 6b themselves form the abutment for a squeezing of the ignition means 7 required for ignition by the radial action of an ignition pin. The ignition ring 6 is filled in a rational manner outside the sleeve 4 with the ignition means, or the like by a seal. the primer filling is closed and thus secured against falling out during assembly or protected against becoming damp and then can usually be inserted into the sleeve 4 mostly with the open side first. The axial position of the ring detonator 5 can be freely selected as a function of the ignition system of the associated weapon within the sleeve 4 and, in itself, a corresponding press fit is sufficient for fixing it in position, but also forms of the Sleeve or other spacers for positioning the ring igniter within the sleeve 4 may be provided.
