Abstract

The plinth insert (1) of an otherwise elevated piece of furniture has a panel (8) which is essentially continuous over the width of the furniture and which is set back - from below - over the larger part of its height and the larger central part of its width behind the plane of its front side, so that a gripping opening is formed above this set-back part and, to the side of said gripping opening, the full space is available for accommodating fittings (for example rollers (16)) for the insert. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a piece of furniture with a raised support frame and a plinth reaching near the floor, the front panel, which is essentially continuous across the width of the furniture, is fastened to a slide-in module that can be pulled out in relation to the support frame and over a larger part of its height behind the front panel. Plane jumps back so that a panel section or furniture section that can be pulled out with the panel also runs in the front plane above the recessed panel section and has a horizontal distance from it.

Such pieces of furniture are generally box-type furniture, such as cupboards, chests of drawers, etc., which have a base drawer - or several thereof - below the supporting frame designed as a crown base. More recently, so-called sofa beds have also been built in a similar way, in that an insert provided with a slatted frame and upholstery overlaps another slatted frame (section) which is in the inserted state and which is connected to the (stationary) support frame or an also removable intermediate part which is dragged by the insert. When the drawer is pulled out, for example, depending on the design, the two slatted frame sections are staggered in height next to or behind one another, and a correspondingly differently thick, foldable cushion part compensates for the difference in height to form a continuous lying surface.

A problem with all such plug-in inserts is that pulling them out of the inserted rest position is difficult because one cannot attack the cover; it does not matter whether the weight of the slide-in unit is removed from the stationary part (using appropriate support guides) or - as is customary with sofa beds - by means of rollers directly on the floor. It also plays a role that such inserts should not be recognizable as such and therefore the attachment of handles or the like is out of the question. Equally unsatisfactory are handle strips or handle recesses on the panel, as are known (continuously across the entire panel width), for example from DE-A-1 554 135 and DE-U-83 18 827; in addition there is the fact that they only offer narrow contact surfaces and can practically not be covered or upholstered with fabric (textile fabric).

In the sofa bed described at the outset, which is known from US Pat. No. 4,067,073, the panel consists of two plates or strips, both of which extend over the entire width of the insert and are attached to it in such a way that the lower strip, which extends over a larger part of the diaphragm height, is set back from the upper one and is at a horizontal distance from the latter. As a result, the upper bar is available as a handle for pulling out the slide-in unit, but the space required for the installation of rollers or other parts of the slide-in is - often crucially - limited.

The object of the invention is accordingly to make it much easier to pull out such inserts from the fixed part of the piece of furniture without making the insert recognizable as such and without impairing the function of the insert mechanism.

This object is achieved in that the diaphragm springs back only over the larger central part of its width behind the front plane, while its lateral end regions run in the front plane. Because of the partial recess of the panel, the upper panel or furniture section can be gripped behind (without the handle as such) and at the same time allows a person standing in front of the cabinet in question or sitting on the sofa in question to push their feet under the piece of furniture what is useful and perceived as pleasant. On the other hand, this effect known from completely retracted plinths (US-A-4 067 073) is achieved here without loss of front corner space below the support frame, which remains usable in this way for accommodating fittings, etc.

It is obvious that the new design of a furniture base insert, and in particular its cover, cannot be compared with such sofa bed constructions is, in which no base is provided and an insert is hung under the raised support frame on this or is also provided with castors so that one can reach behind a correspondingly high arranged front frame of the insert (DE-A-1 429 334 and DE-U -69 04 278).

If the insert is part of the slatted frame or the like and the upholstery of a sofa bed, the arrangement is preferably such that the cover ends at the top essentially at the height of the pull-out slatted frame section, with an upper, non-recessed edge area of the cover on the frame of the slatted frame section is attached. However, the insert can also be the base drawer of a piece of cabinet furniture.

In any case, it is advantageous if the diaphragm consists of a plate which has a cutout which is open at the bottom and over which stretched bow-shaped trusses stretched along its upper and lower (open) edges and which on the outside carry the recessed diaphragm section which is adapted to the shape of the truss.

  • Fig. 1 das Schlafsofa in Teilansicht von vorn;
  • Fig. 3 einen Schnitt gemäß der Linie III-III in Fig. 1.
The drawing illustrates the invention using an exemplary embodiment, namely a sofa bed, and shows:
  • Figure 1 shows the sofa bed in partial view from the front.
  • Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II in Fig. 1. and
  • 3 shows a section along the line III-III in FIG. 1.

Figure 1 shows - in front view - essentially only the insert 1 of the sofa bed and the support frame fixedly mounted on the side plates or legs 2, which is only indicated by cross struts 3 and 4. The support frame or an intermediate part - towed by the insert 1 - has at least one slatted frame section and possibly headrests etc.; this is omitted because the structure of the sofa bed is conventional. The upholstery of the insert 1 including the fold-down support for the other sofa bed parts is also omitted for the same reason and for better clarity.

The insert 1 in turn has a frame formed by side longitudinal members 5 and cross bars 6 (only the front one is shown) which carries the slats 7 of the slatted frame section which can be moved as part of the insert 1. It is clear that on this movable slatted frame section (slats 7) the cushion cover movable with the insert 1 lies and is fastened; a part of it - when the insert 1 is pulled out - can be folded back onto an immovable or dragged slatted frame section, a different pad thickness compensating for the height difference between the slatted frame sections.

The side walls (armrests) arranged in the usual way on the side of the insert 1 are - as said - omitted. These are also padded and enclose the legs 2 and possibly parts of the support frame. The latter also carries the back wall of the sofa, which in turn - as is known - can consist of a stationary and a movable part articulated on the insert 1 or a dragged intermediate section.

A panel 8 fastened to the front cross member 6 and to the end faces of the longitudinal members 5 extends along the front side of the insert 1. It consists, for example, of a chipboard defining the front side plane 8a and has a cutout 9 in the form of an elongated, open at the bottom U. This cut-out bridges on the back two elongated bow-shaped (wooden) crossbeams 10 arranged at the top and bottom, which are fastened at the ends to the panel 8 by means of vertical reinforcement strips 11 in the region of the vertical side edges of the cutout 9. On the front, the crossbeams 10 are covered with a strip of stiff but flexible material (for example hardboard) that is continuous over the full height of the cutout 9 and the entire length of the crossbeam 10 (and thus also the cutout 9) and forms the recessed panel section 12. In FIG. 2, which, like FIG. 3, shows part of the withdrawn insert 1, the return is designated by x. As a result, there is an opening 13 extending upwards between the plate 12 and the section 14 of the diaphragm 8 which remains above the cutout 9 (FIG. 3).

The sections 15 of the panel 8 located on the side of the cutout 9 carry rollers 16 on the back, on which the insert 1 can be moved.
