Abstract

In a composite frame with a vertical door portion (1) and an inclined window portion (2) said portions are provided with grooves (11, 12) for receiving the edge of an internal lining and are interconnected through a fulcrum pin (6) allowing in the installation phase the window portion to be adjusted to the roof inclination on site of installation. The two portions have mating guide and seal faces (15, 16) that are concentric with the fulcrum pin, and one (15) of which interconnects the internal edge faces (13, 14) laterally inside the grooves (11, 12) of the frame side members.

Description

  • DK patent application No. 4911/87 relates to a particular balcony window and door arrangement for use in an inclined roof. The rear wall of the balcony consists. firstly, of a vertical breast wall having at least one door and, secondly, of a sloping roof portion including a window positioned above the door and having a lower edge which in the closing position fits tightly against the upper edge of the closed door.
  • The door and the window of such an arrangement should have a common main frame, the side members of which must then have a bend or a knee between the vertical portion pertaining to the door and the window portion which must have an inclination corresponding to the inclination of the roof.
  • If the door and window arrangements of the type concerned are produced individually or by an artisan, the roof inclination will be known and the main frame side members may then according to an ordinary technique, for instance the scarfing technique, be composed of a frame portion and a window portion forming the correct angle to each other and being assembled in a knee having the necessary strength and stability.
  • In case of mass production, however, the roof inclination on site of installation cannot be supposed to be known when organizing the production of frames and, consequently, it is advantageous to shape the main frame in such a manner that the angle between the door portion and the window portion may be adjusted on site of installation without reducing the demand on strength and stiffness of the knee and without deteriorating the tightness and the look of the installed frame.
  • An object of the invention is to comply with such a request and in this respect the invention relates to a composite frame including a door portion that is vertical in its position of installation, in particular for a balcony door, and a window portion adapted to be installed in an inclined roof, such frame being characterized in that the frame side members of the door portion and of the window portion in a manner known per se are provided with grooves for receiving an internal lining and are interconnected through a fulcrum pin which during the mounting operation allows the frame side member of the window portion to be angularly adjusted to the roof inclination, the two associated frame side members having mating circular guide and seal faces that are concentric with the fulcrum pin and the radius of which is somewhat larger than the perpendicular distance from the axis of the fulcrum pin to the edge of the frame side member laterally inside the groove.
  • The fulcrum pin may not only serve to determine the pivot axis between said two frame members, since it may further contribute to their being secured together when it is formed by a bolt to be tightened after the necessary tilting adjustment of the window portion of the frame, following which. if necessary, the window portion of the frame may be supplemented with additional fixing means, such as screws in pre-bored holes in one of the portions. This provides for ensuring that the knee has the required strength, thereby making the frame stable. The adjacent end faces of the door portion and the window portion of a frame may be bevelled so as to abut closely on each other when the the window portion is adjusted to the smallest roof inclination, thereby in this situation avoiding problems as to tightness and look, but when tilting to a steeper inclination said two portions will gape at the inner edge which is detrimental to the tightness as well as to the look. However, this will be eliminated by said guide and seal faces sliding on each other during the pivotal adjustment of the window portion and one of which has the function of a bridge between the edge sections of the door and window portions constituting the visible wall of the lining grooves of said portions. Thus, a section of the relevant guide and seal face ensures the continuity between said edge sections, irrespective of the size of the gap between the two frame portions at their internal edges.
  • To intensify the tightness the two associated frame side members may further be provided with mating guide and seal faces that are concentric with the fulcrum pin, and the radius of which is somewhat larger than the perpendicular distance from the axis of the fulcrum pin to the bottom of the groove, thereby also providing continuity at the bottom thereof.
  • Supplementary particulars of the composite frame according to the invention are specified in the claims and will be explained in the following with reference to the drawing which in a perspective exploded view illustrates the relevant parts of an embodiment of the composite frame.
  • The drawing shows parts of a frame side member composed of a vertical door portion 1 and a window portion 2 that may be adjusted to the actual roof inclination, e.g. within the range of 45° to 60°. The portions are supposed to be profiled lengths of pinewood and in order to increase the mechanical strength in the illustrated knee portion of the frame a disc 3 made from plywood or other stable material is permanently secured in an approximately semi-circular recess provided at the upper end of the door portion 1 of the frame. The visible, inwardly directed lateral surface of said disc is flush with the inside of the portion 1. The portion 2 has a recess 4 corresponding as regards shape to a sector of the disc 3 and the depth of which is of the same size as the thickness of the disc.
  • The disc has a centre hole 5 for a fulcrum pin 6 illustrated as a bolt with a comparatively large, circular head 7. A corresponding nut 8 comprises an internally threaded stud extending through a hole 9 in the window portion 2 and is provided with teeth which on tightening the screw are forced into the wood. After the inclination of the window portion 2 has been adjusted and the screw 6 has been tightened the joint may be reinforced by screws inserted through pre-bored holes 10 in portion 2.
  • Ordinary grooves 11 and 12 for receiving an internal lining, not shown in the drawing, are provided in the inner edge of both frame portions 1 and 2. Laterally inside the grooves said two frame members have edge faces 13 and 14 that are visible also after the lining member has been mounted.
  • Along part of its periphery the disc 3 has a guide and seal face 15 that is concentric with the pin 6 and is of the same width as the edge faces 13 and 14 and a radius that is a little larger than the perpendicular distance from the axis of the fulcrum pin to the two edge faces. A mating guide and seal face 16 forms part of the wall of the recess 4 in window portion 2. Another part of said wall is constituted by a similar guide and seal face 17 the radius of which is a little larger than the perpendicular distance from the axis of the hole 9 to the bottom of the groove 12 and which mates with a circumferential surface 18 of the disc 3. It will thus appear that parts of the faces 15 and 18 overbridge the gaps between the edge faces 13 and 14 and the bottoms of the two grooves 11 and 12, respectively, thereby providing continuity at either place irrespective of the angle between the two frame portions 1 and 2. An angular gap may occur between the parts of the two portions 1 and 2 positioned at the rear of the grooves 11 and 12, but said gap will be covered and sealed by the lining members when mounted.
  • In the illustrated embodiment the internal faces of said two lateral frame portions 1 and 2 are provided with striking or abutment rails 19 and 20 for a door and a window frame, respectively. In the area of the fulcrum pin 6 the directions of said rails intersect and the rails have concavely curved end faces 21 and 22 which together with the circumference of the bolt head 7 constitute supplementary guide and seal faces. With the same effect as explained with respect to the pairwise associated guide and seal faces 15, 16 and 17, 18 the diameter of the bolt head 7 is a little larger than the width of the abutment rails 19 and 20 that are positioned with their outer edges substantially in tangential alignment with the circumference of the bolt head, thereby leaving between the inner edges of the abutment rails a certain space filled or overbridged by part of the circumference of the bolt head.
  • In the illustrated embodiment the abutment rail 20 of the window portion 2 presents a concavely curved end face that is flush with the guide and seal face 16 and, after an angular adjustment of the portion 2 has been effected, a complementary filler 20' may be mounted as an extension of the abutment rail 20 and screwed on the disc 3 in order to extend said rail further on to the head 7 of the fulcrum pin 6. As it will appear from the drawing the complementary filler 20' has a stepped rear wall so as to abut tightly on the front of the disc 3 at two levels.
