Abstract

A tobacco smoke filter is indicated, particularly for tobacco pipes, consisting of a cylindrical sleeve (1) of absorbent material which is closed at each of its two ends by a plug (2) with through holes (8), and a filter material in the sleeve between the plugs. Each of the plugs has a central blind hole (3), opening outwards, which is surrounded by a double-walled peripheral wall (4, 5). Radial holes (8, 9) which are flush with each other extend through the two concentric walls (4, 5) of this peripheral wall and connect the blind hole (3) to the annular gap (6), and the latter to the outer circumference on which the sleeve rests. As a result of this measure, during smoking, the smoke entering the blind hole is deflected outwards against the sleeve and there deposits a high proportion of its condensable content, before it flows through the annular gap into the filter space filled by the filter material. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a smoke filter, in particular for tobacco pipes, consisting of a cylindrical sleeve made of absorbent material, which is closed at both ends by a plug provided with through holes in the sleeve, and a filter material in the sleeve between the plugs. Such filters are commercially available for tobacco pipes.

The known filters consist of a paper tube of about 8 mm outer diameter and 36 mm in length, into which plugs of about 6 mm in length are inserted, which are provided with axial through holes or recesses, and a filter material filling made of granular activated carbon, which the interior of the Fills the sleeve between the plugs.

Such filters are primarily intended for use in tobacco pipes. When a pipe equipped with it is used, the tobacco smoke flows through the axial holes in the pipe-head end of the filter into the sleeve and hits the activated carbon particles, where condensate separates out. Due to capillary forces, but also due to flow effects, condensate also reaches the inner wall of the sleeve and is absorbed by it due to the suction properties of the sleeve material.

It has been shown in use that, especially when smoking relatively moist tobacco, the moisture absorption capacity of such a filter is inadequate and condensate with a moist consistency finally reaches the through-holes of the mouthpiece-side stopper of the filter, where it is bothersome and unpleasant for the smoker . Studies have shown that the sleeve material was still relatively dry when this effect occurred. It is concluded from this that the tobacco smoke does not come into sufficient contact with the sleeve in order to separate out a larger proportion of the condensate contained therein.

The invention is based on the charge to specify a filter of the type mentioned at the outset, which has better condensate separation properties.

This object is achieved by the characterizing features of claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.

In the filter according to the invention, when smoking, the tobacco smoke falls into the blind hole when it reaches the filter in the first phase. This leads to the first separation of condensate in this area. In the second phase, the tobacco smoke is deflected laterally and directed against the inner wall of the absorbent sleeve surrounding the inlet plug. For this purpose, an annular gap is formed between the blind hole and the sleeve through the plug, and the two concentric walls of the plug delimiting them are provided with mutually aligned through holes, of which the holes formed in the outer peripheral wall preferably have a larger cross section than that in the inner peripheral wall.

It is also advantageous if the holes are as close as possible to the entry end of the sleeve, i.e. close to the opening of the blind hole. It is hereby achieved that the smoke in the holes which are formed in the inner peripheral wall is accelerated, so that it relaxes and cools as it emerges from these holes into the annular gap, a large proportion of the smoke being in alignment with the inner holes opposite outer holes hits the surrounding sleeve and there separates a large part of the moisture-bound condensate. Due to the capillary action of the absorbent sleeve material, the condensate can quickly spread from there in the sleeve material. The smoke, which is partially dehumidified in this way, passes through the annular gap into the actual interior of the sleeve, which is filled with filterable substances, for example granular waste coal, or other substances suitable for filtration. Such substances can be diatomaceous earth, meerschaum, cellulose and the like. The activated carbon, for example, with its hydrophobic property is now confronted with the dehumidified smoke and can perceive the gas phase of the smoke for detoxification in a much better function than is the case with known pipe filters, where the surface of the activated carbon is immediately affected by the moisture content in the Smoke is sealed and can no longer do the job it was intended to do.

The annular gap should be sufficiently wide to promote relaxation of the smoke after exiting the holes in the inner peripheral wall, but should be narrow enough when using a granular filter material that no filter medium granules can enter it. The through holes in the outer peripheral wall of the stopper preferably have a cross-section that is about four to ten times larger than the holes in the inner peripheral wall in order to allow as much as possible for the smoke To make sleeve material accessible.

According to one embodiment of the invention, a medium with an absorbent property, for example cellulose, can be arranged in the annular gap, but the additional tensile resistance which is inevitably built up as a result must then be compensated for by larger through holes and / or by a larger gap width.

It is also beneficial if entry into the blind hole, i.e. the ring-shaped end wall, which delimits the annular gap, is rounded off conically or toroidally in order to achieve better flow-guiding properties for the smoke.

For smoke relaxation and also for manufacturing reasons, it is advantageous if the cross section of the annular gap widens slightly towards its open end. Furthermore, it is advantageous for manufacturing reasons if the outer surface of the plugs in the area between the outer through holes and the end of the respective plug facing away from the opening of the blind hole is slightly conical in order to facilitate the insertion of the plugs into the sleeves.

Polypropylene is particularly suitable as the material for the plugs, since this material has sufficient heat resistance, which can be influenced by the addition of mineral additives, and is easy to process. A filler content of 30% to 40%, for example from talc, additionally improves the sliding properties of the material, which simplifies the manufacture of the plugs. For handling the finished filter during packaging, it is also advantageous if a small proportion of a ferromagnetic material, for example iron powder, is added to the stopper material. The filters can then be created using magnetic fields align.

It is important that the through holes in the inner peripheral wall, which delimits the blind hole, are sufficiently small to be able to produce the aforementioned nozzle effect. On the other hand, they must not be too small, because otherwise they obstruct the train when smoking. Experiments have shown that four holes, which are arranged on a radial plane at regular angular intervals and each have a diameter of 1 mm, do not result in any significant impairment of the draft of a pipe. The through holes in the outer peripheral wall that clamps on the sleeve should be about 5 to 10 times as large in cross-sectional area as the through holes in the inner peripheral wall. For example, they can have a diameter of 2.5 mm. The aforementioned dimensions relate to a commercially available filter size of the type described at the beginning.

  • Fig. 1 einen erfindungsgemäßen Filter;
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawings. It shows:
  • 1 shows a filter according to the invention;
  • Fig. 2 shows a plug for the filter of FIG. 1 in axial section, and
  • 3 is a plan view of the stopper of FIG. 2nd

Wichtig ist, daß das Hülsenmaterial gut saugfähig ist.1 shows a sleeve 1, which consists of an absorbent paper, nonwoven material or other suitable absorbent material and has a cylindrical shape. Plugs 2 are inserted into both ends of the sleeve 1. The sleeve 1 is filled with a suitable filter material, which in particular activated carbon or another, filterable material suitable for filtering smoke. It is important that the sleeve material is well absorbent.

Fig. 2 shows in axial section (along the line II-II of Fig. 3) a plug 2 of the filter of Fig. 1. The plug 2 is substantially cylindrical. It has a central, preferably circular blind hole 3, which is preferably slightly conical for manufacturing reasons. The wall surrounding the blind hole 3 is double-walled, consisting of an inner wall 4 and an outer wall 5, which form an annular gap 6 between them, which is open on the side of the plug 2 facing away from the opening of the blind hole 3 and cross-sectionally in the direction of this opening slightly enlarged. At the other end, the annular gap 6 is closed by an annular end wall 7 which connects the two concentric peripheral walls 4 and 5 to one another. In the present example, this ring wall is rounded in a toroidal shape in the opening region of the blind hole 3 in order to offer good conductivity for the tobacco smoke flowing into the blind hole 3 from the outside.

In the example shown, four through bores are formed in the inner circumferential wall 4 near the opening region of the blind hole 3, which run approximately in the radial direction in a common radial plane. In the outer peripheral wall 5, in line with the (inner) through holes 8 in the inner peripheral wall 4, through holes 9 are also formed, which in the example shown have a diameter that is approximately 2.5 times as large as the diameter of the inner through holes 8. In Fig. 2, the sleeve 1, in which the plugs 2 are inserted, is shown in dashed lines. As shown in FIG. 2, the outer peripheral wall 5 is slightly conical below the through holes 9, which facilitates the insertion of the plugs into the sleeve 1. It also becomes a Excessive compression of the sleeve material avoided, which could possibly impair the absorbency.

Der Verrundungsradius der Sacklochöffnung ist etwa 2,5 mm.As a practical example it should be stated that the plug 2 has a diameter of about 7.3 mm and a length of about 6 mm. The blind hole 3 has a diameter of approximately 2.8 mm and extends approximately 5 mm deep into the plug 2. The through bores 8 in the inner peripheral wall 4 have a diameter of approximately 1 mm, while the through bores 9 in the outer peripheral wall 5 have a diameter of approximately 2-2.5 mm. The annular gap 6 has a width of approximately 1 mm at its outlet end. The distance of the center of the through bores 8 and 9 from the upper end face of the plug 2, i.e. from the opening plane of the blind hole 3 is approximately 1.8 mm. The rounding radius of the blind hole opening is approximately 2.5 mm.

As the drawing also shows, the inside of the annular end wall 7, which covers the annular gap 6, runs obliquely. At the mouth end of the filter from the filter chamber into the annular gap, smoke can therefore be partially deflected under inertia against the outer through holes 9 before it enters the blind hole 3 through the inner through holes 8 and finally leaves the filter. The edges of the through bores 8 and 9 also form flow separation edges which lead to a swirling of the smoke.

The plug at the mouth end of the filter thus fulfills a further condensate separating function within the framework of its design features, which in turn is particularly evident in the visible precipitation on the associated area of the sleeve.

Finally, it is mentioned that the sleeve 1 can protrude about 0.5-1 mm from each stopper 2. With this As a measure, this protruding section of the sleeve can also be used to hold condensate, in particular such condensate, which may be deposited on the end face of the plug.

In the filter according to the invention, it is largely ruled out that moisture condenses at narrow points and obstructs the free flow of smoke there and thus disturbs the smoker when smoking. A significant part of the condensable components contained in the smoke is directed directly onto the sleeve and absorbed by it, so that the disruptive effects of the type mentioned at the outset are avoided.

An oblique arrangement of the holes, in which the alignment lines of the outer and inner through holes are not purely radial, but inclined to a radial plane, is in principle also possible, but in such embodiments the impact effects of the smoke on the sleeve are not so pronounced.
