Abstract

In the production of mouldings from crosslinking moulding materials, in particular by the injection-moulding process, reproducible filling of the mould is problematical. Overfilling, with the consequence of flash formation, or underfilling, with the consequence that rejects are produced, frequently take place. In the case of the method proposed, the degree of mould filling is controlled with the aid of the pressures measured in the mould. The method makes use of the fact that crosslinking moulding materials are generally introduced into a mould which is of a higher temperature than the moulding material. After filling the mould, the moulding material is heated up in order to start the crosslinking reactions. The heating up causes a volume expansion. If the mould is completely filled, the expansion is prevented and a pressure increase occurs. If the mould is underfilled, expansion completely or partially takes place. The pressure increase is then less or there is no pressure increase. With suitable boundary conditions, these pressure signals characterise the mould filling level. The method provides mould filling control which acts from shot to shot. The reference variable for the control loop is the mould cavity pressure. The correcting variable for the control is, in the case of injection moulding, the metering stroke. In the case of other processes, the metering weight or the metering volume may be used. <IMAGE>
