- Polyolefin filaments and yarns having high tensile strengths and high moduli have very poor wettability by and adhesion to hydrophilic materials, such as heat-curing phenolic, epoxy, vinylester, polyester and acrylate resin based resins customarily used for producing composite materials, and also thermoplastics and rubber. For this reason they are not particularly suitable for producing composite materials without pretreatment.

- the polyolefins used consist preferably of polyethylenes in particular linear polyethylenes, having an ultrahigh molecular weight of more than 600,000 g/mol (weight average of molecular weight). These polyethylenes may contain minor amounts preferably not more 5 mol %, of one or more other alkenes copolymerizable therewith, such as propylene, butylene, pentene, hexene, 4-methylpentene, octene etc.

- the two filament and yarn types are combined by core spinning a filament or yarn of low wetting and adhesive power with a filament and/or a yarn of high wetting and adhesive power, or by twisting the two components.
- the proportion of filaments or yarns of high wetting and adhesive power in relation to the proportion of filaments and yarns of low wetting and adhesive power is 10 to 50% by weight, in particular 15 to 30% by weight, particularly advantageously these proportions being about 25% by weight in the case of core spinning and about 15% by weight in the case of twisting.
- Composite materials which have been produced using combinations according to the invention as reinforcing materials can be used for example to produce sport articles such as tennis rackets or golf clubs, boat hulls such as kayak or canoe boat hulls, antiballistic articles, helmets, high-pressure hoses etc.
