Definitions
- Matrix writing devices are generally understood to mean all writing devices which apply gradual, alphanumeric characters or images to a recording medium. Examples of this are dot matrix printers or ink drop printers. The width of the print heads is limited for manufacturing reasons. For the same reasons, the distance between adjacent writing elements cannot be reduced arbitrarily.
- An ink mosaic writing device of this type is known for example from DE 25 27 647 Cl. The maximum possible resolution is approx. 4 writing elements, i.e. Ink nozzles per mm.
- the present invention is based on the object of designing a matrix writing device of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that a writing width is achieved which is greater than that of an individual writing head, and at the same time the resolution is better than that of the individual writing head. Furthermore, the number of rows of write heads required for this device should be kept as small as possible.
- Phase means the distance between the individual writing elements.
- the distance between two writing elements in a writing head corresponds to a phase shift of 360 °.
- the arrangement of the write heads according to the invention makes it possible to obtain an increased resolution and at the same time a large write width with a minimal number of rows of write heads. If one tried to achieve this goal with the known means, one would first have to cover the entire desired writing width in order to achieve the basic resolution, which means the resolution of the individual print heads, two rows of these Arrange printheads offset from each other. If you only wanted to double the resolution, two further rows would have to be arranged with a gap between them, this time with a phase shift of 180 ° to that of the first two rows. In total, four rows of print heads would be necessary. Six rows would be necessary for a triple resolution.
- the matrix writing device can also be used to achieve multi-color printing. If the normal raster principle is used, in which there is a shift between the individual color points, the factor by which the resolution should otherwise be increased can only be replaced by the number of desired colors. Four rows are required for three-color printing, each row being assigned a color and the first and fourth rows using the same color.
- phase shift is selected according to the invention and the color of the print heads in each row and between the rows is cyclically interchanged.
- a write head (1) is shown schematically in FIG. 1, which can represent, for example, the top view of the nozzle outlet openings of a piezoelectric ink drop recorder.
- the writing elements (2) are practically formed by the nozzle outlet openings.
- a needle or thermal printer can also be used instead of an ink drop pen. It is only essential that e.g. the alphanumeric characters or images to be displayed on a record carrier consist of the points of a matrix.
- A denotes the write width of the write head (1), i.e. the distance from the center of the extreme left to the center of the extreme right writing element.
- B denotes the width of the entire print head and s the distance between two writing elements (calculated from center to center).
- FIG. 2 A known writing device is shown schematically in FIG. 2, in which it is only a matter of increasing the writing width in the case of stationary writing heads with unchanged resolution.
- the resolution of the individual write head is referred to below as the basic resolution G.
- four write heads (3 to 6) are arranged zigzag in a row in two rows.
- the write heads (1, 3 to 6,) have edge regions that are larger than half the distance between two writing elements. It is therefore not possible to arrange the print heads in a row without having to accept resolution losses in the transition area from one write head to another.
- With the extremely small Dimensions - around four writing elements per mm can be achieved in practice today - it is hardly possible in terms of manufacturing technology to achieve narrower edge areas.
- FIG. 3 shows an arrangement known, for example from DE 33 06 098 A1, for increasing the resolution with a writing width which approximately corresponds to the writing width A.
- Three write heads (7-9) are shown, which are each 120 ° out of phase with each other. This enables a resolution to be achieved that is three times higher than the basic resolution G.
- the factor by which the basic resolution must be multiplied in order to arrive at the resolution achieved is designated by n.
- the distances between the matrix points that can be generated by the writing elements are practically reduced by this factor compared to the distance between the writing elements themselves.
- the possible recording points are shown in the lower part of FIG. As can be seen from this, the resolution has been increased to 12 recording points per mm over a total writing width which far exceeds that of a single writing head. All that is required is n + 1 rows of write heads that are cleverly out of phase.
- the matrix writing device can also be used for multi-color representations.
- 6 shows an exemplary embodiment for a three-color representation with a resolution that corresponds to the basic resolution G.
- the basic resolution is four writing elements per mm.
- the three colors against each other according to the raster principle should be shown shifted.
- the same principle applies as for the increased resolution acc. of FIG. 4.
- the colors selected are, for example, yellow, cyan and magenta.
- the phase shift is again 120 °. In the lower part of FIG 6, the recording points of the three colors are shown with the corresponding phase shift.
- FIG. 7 shows a further example for four colors, black being added as the fourth color.
- multi-color representations are intended in which all colors are to a certain extent "in phase", i.e. that they are plotted on top of one another on the same recording point, the formulas have to be varied slightly.
- M m x n.
- the shift results in D m x s.
- the width of the print head here is B ⁇ (n + l) x m + s.
- the number of rows of printheads required is n + 1.
- FIGS. 8 and 9 show two examples of three and four color representations.
- n 8
- a four-color display with double basic resolution can be obtained for each color.
- 9 rows of write heads are required compared to 16 rows in a conventional arrangement. This case is shown in FIG 10.
- FIG. 11 shows schematically the outer basic structure of a complete matrix writing device.
- a recording medium (12) for example normal registration paper, is drawn over transport rollers (10, 11) in the direction of arrow (13) via a spacer (14) on the end face (15) of a housing (16).
- the connecting line (17) is guided into the housing (16) and is provided at its free end with a plug (18) for connection to a corresponding control device that supplies the control signals for recording the desired courses, characters or images.
- the housing (16) contains the rows of write heads arranged according to the invention.
Abstract
Description
Tintendüsen pro mm.The invention relates to a matrix writing device according to the preamble of claim 1. Matrix writing devices are generally understood to mean all writing devices which apply gradual, alphanumeric characters or images to a recording medium. Examples of this are dot matrix printers or ink drop printers. The width of the print heads is limited for manufacturing reasons. For the same reasons, the distance between adjacent writing elements cannot be reduced arbitrarily. An ink mosaic writing device of this type is known for example from DE 25 27 647 Cl. The maximum possible resolution is approx. 4 writing elements, i.e. Ink nozzles per mm.
Another matrix writing device with a so-called channel matrix is known from DE 33 06 098 A1, in which to increase the resolution it has already been proposed to arrange two or more rows of ink channels offset from one another. This arrangement can be used not only for increased resolution, but also for multicolored drawing.
If a writing width that is larger than that of the individual head is desired for fixed writing heads, several of these writing heads must be arranged in series. So far, the problem has arisen that the edge areas of the individual writing heads, which have no writing elements, are again larger than half the distance between two writing elements for manufacturing reasons. That means However, even with abutting write heads, there is a gap between the last write element of one write head and the first write element of the other write head, which is generally much larger than the distance between two write elements of one head. This means that the entire writing width cannot be achieved with the same high resolution by simply lining up several print heads. If you want to maintain the resolution of a print head for the entire print width, you have not previously arranged the individual print heads in a row, but in two rows with gaps.
The present invention is based on the object of designing a matrix writing device of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that a writing width is achieved which is greater than that of an individual writing head, and at the same time the resolution is better than that of the individual writing head. Furthermore, the number of rows of write heads required for this device should be kept as small as possible.
This object is achieved according to the invention by the features of patent claim 1. Phase here means the distance between the individual writing elements. The distance between two writing elements in a writing head corresponds to a phase shift of 360 °. The arrangement of the write heads according to the invention makes it possible to obtain an increased resolution and at the same time a large write width with a minimal number of rows of write heads.
In contrast, according to the present invention, only one more row is necessary than corresponds to the increase in resolution, i.e. three rows for a resolution twice as high and four rows for a resolution three times as high.
Instead of the increased resolution, the matrix writing device according to the invention can also be used to achieve multi-color printing. If the normal raster principle is used, in which there is a shift between the individual color points, the factor by which the resolution should otherwise be increased can only be replaced by the number of desired colors. Four rows are required for three-color printing, each row being assigned a color and the first and fourth rows using the same color.
In contrast, if multi-color printing is desired "in phase", i.e. a print in which different colors are assigned to the same recording point, the phase shift is selected according to the invention and the color of the print heads in each row and between the rows is cyclically interchanged.
In the context of the invention it is advantageously possible to combine increased resolution and color writing. Should If multi-color printing is combined in phase with increased resolution, certain precautions must also be taken. Either writing heads with different lengths have to be used or not every writing element in every writing head can be used.
In any case, it must be taken into account that without special measures, such as shortened writing heads, not all writing elements of the outermost writing heads can be used.

A write head (1) is shown schematically in FIG. 1, which can represent, for example, the top view of the nozzle outlet openings of a piezoelectric ink drop recorder. The writing elements (2) are practically formed by the nozzle outlet openings.
As already mentioned at the beginning, a needle or thermal printer can also be used instead of an ink drop pen. It is only essential that e.g. the alphanumeric characters or images to be displayed on a record carrier consist of the points of a matrix.
With reference to FIG. 1, some variables are to be defined that are important for understanding the following figures. A denotes the write width of the write head (1), i.e. the distance from the center of the extreme left to the center of the extreme right writing element. B denotes the width of the entire print head and s the distance between two writing elements (calculated from center to center).
A known writing device is shown schematically in FIG. 2, in which it is only a matter of increasing the writing width in the case of stationary writing heads with unchanged resolution. The resolution of the individual write head is referred to below as the basic resolution G. In FIG 2, four write heads (3 to 6) are arranged zigzag in a row in two rows. As can be seen from both FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the write heads (1, 3 to 6,) have edge regions that are larger than half the distance between two writing elements. It is therefore not possible to arrange the print heads in a row without having to accept resolution losses in the transition area from one write head to another. With the extremely small Dimensions - around four writing elements per mm can be achieved in practice today - it is hardly possible in terms of manufacturing technology to achieve narrower edge areas.
Um diesen Faktor werden praktisch die Abstände der durch die Schreibelemente erzeugbaren Matrix-Punkte gegenüber dem Abstand der Schreibelmente selbst verringert.3 shows an arrangement known, for example from DE 33 06 098 A1, for increasing the resolution with a writing width which approximately corresponds to the writing width A. Three write heads (7-9) are shown, which are each 120 ° out of phase with each other. This enables a resolution to be achieved that is three times higher than the basic resolution G. The factor by which the basic resolution must be multiplied in order to arrive at the resolution achieved is designated by n. The distances between the matrix points that can be generated by the writing elements are practically reduced by this factor compared to the distance between the writing elements themselves.
M = m x n + l
FIG 4 ist m = 2 gewählt. Damit ergibt sich M = 7, d.h. sieben Schreibelemente pro Schreibkopf. Zur Vereinfachung der Darstellung sind von den Schreibköpfen nur noch die als Kreise dargestellen Schreibelemente längs einer Linie wiedergegeben.4 shows a first exemplary embodiment according to the present invention with a basic resolution G of four writing elements per mm and with a factor n = 3 for increasing the resolution. So that all writing elements of a writing head can be used, the number M of writing elements of a writing head should apply
M = mxn + l
where m is an arbitrary natural number other than 0. It should be noted at this point that not all writing elements of the outermost writing head can be used for the increased resolution if this outer writing head is not shorter than the rest. In the example according to 4 is chosen m = 2. This results in M = 7, ie seven write elements per write head. To simplify the illustration, only the as of the writing heads Circles represent writing elements along a line.
B ≦ (m x n + m + l + l/n) x s = M x s + D = A + D + s = A + C
In general, some formulas can be set up with the aid of which the arrangement according to the invention can be calculated. So the writing length is A = (M - l) x s. The shift D between the write heads of two adjacent rows results in D = (m + l / n) xs = A / n + l / nx s. The distance C between the last write element of one and the first write element of the next write head results in C = (m + l + l / n) xs = D + s. There is also a condition for the width B of the print head. The following must apply to B:
B ≦ (mxn + m + l + l / n) xs = M xs + D = A + D + s = A + C
The possible recording points are shown in the lower part of FIG. As can be seen from this, the resolution has been increased to 12 recording points per mm over a total writing width which far exceeds that of a single writing head. All that is required is n + 1 rows of write heads that are cleverly out of phase.
Die Auflösung beträgt in diesem Fall 16 Aufzeichnungspunkte pro mm.5 shows a similar representation for n = 4; m = 1 and M = 5. The necessary phase shift in this example is 90 °. The resolution in this case is 16 recording points per mm.
As already mentioned, the matrix writing device according to the invention can also be used for multi-color representations. 6 shows an exemplary embodiment for a three-color representation with a resolution that corresponds to the basic resolution G. In this case it is again assumed, for example, that the basic resolution is four writing elements per mm. Furthermore, it is assumed that the three colors against each other according to the raster principle should be shown shifted. In this case, the same principle applies as for the increased resolution acc. of FIG. 4. The factor 3 is chosen for n, which in this case does not mean the increased resolution but the number of colors to be displayed. 3 is also selected for m. This results in M = 10. The colors selected are, for example, yellow, cyan and magenta. The phase shift is again 120 °. In the lower part of FIG 6, the recording points of the three colors are shown with the corresponding phase shift.
In FIG 7 ist ein weiteres Beispiel für vier Farben dargestellt, wobei als vierte Farbe schwarz hinzugenommen worden ist.7 shows a further example for four colors, black being added as the fourth color.
Vierfarbendarstellungen. If, in contrast to the last two exemplary embodiments, multi-color representations are intended in which all colors are to a certain extent "in phase", i.e. that they are plotted on top of one another on the same recording point, the formulas have to be varied slightly. In order to be able to use all writing elements of a writing head, the number of writing elements per writing head M must be selected as M = m x n. The writing width results in A = (M - l) x s. The shift results in D = m x s. The distance between the writing elements between two adjacent writing heads is thus C = (m + l) x s = D + s. The width of the print head here is B ≦ (n + l) x m + s. As before, the number of rows of printheads required is n + 1. FIGS. 8 and 9 show two examples of three and four color representations.
As already mentioned, it is also advantageously possible with the matrix writing device according to the invention to Combine multi-color displays with increased resolution. With n = 8, for example, a four-color display with double basic resolution can be obtained for each color. Advantageously, only 9 rows of write heads are required compared to 16 rows in a conventional arrangement. This case is shown in FIG 10.
Finally, the last FIG. 11 shows schematically the outer basic structure of a complete matrix writing device. A recording medium (12), for example normal registration paper, is drawn over transport rollers (10, 11) in the direction of arrow (13) via a spacer (14) on the end face (15) of a housing (16). The connecting line (17) is guided into the housing (16) and is provided at its free end with a plug (18) for connection to a corresponding control device that supplies the control signals for recording the desired courses, characters or images. The housing (16) contains the rows of write heads arranged according to the invention.
