Abstract

When a competitor or a group of competitors passes the finishing line, a video camera (6), two time generators (8), a video recorder (9) and a display in the form of a monitor (11) and/or of a video picture printer (12), and a light barrier are able to produce, in a very inexpensive way, finishing-line pictures with at least two times faded in, namely the true finishing time of a first competitor triggered by the light barrier and the precise time which has elapsed from the start at the time said picture was taken. From the time difference, distance sections each corresponding to one hundredth of a second can be determined from which the finishing times of the runners arriving immediately after the winner can be exactly established. In practice one finishing-line picture is sufficient to be able to measure precisely to one hundredth of a second the finishing times of runners arriving almost simultaneously with the winner. Competitors arriving after a fairly large interval can in turn obtain their exact finishing time by means of the light barrier in a further still picture. <IMAGE>
