Definitions
- weighted ribbons have been used for a long time which are wrapped around grenades and which hold an operating blocking part: they prevent arming. When such grenades are launched, the weighted ribbon unwinds dynamically, and when the unwinding is sufficient, arming occurs.
- such grenades remain in the safety position during the start of their trajectory, which prevents any premature bursting, which could result either from the too rapid combustion of the pyrotechnic delay, or from the voluntary but too long retention of the grenade in the hand after having caused the firing of the rocket, either of the release of the grenade during the launching, or of the fall of the launcher wounded by bullet, or finally of the percussion on an obstacle close to the percussion rocket.
- weighted ribbons are inexpensive, and their operation is very safe and very regular, being sheltered from manufacturing defects or poor aging of all other delay systems (pyrotechnics, watchmaking, electronics, etc.).
- known weighted tape systems have drawbacks: - the cap systems, where the counterweight is free as soon as the cap is removed, have caused inadvertent unwinding or inadvertent lack of lighting, - systems where the tape is attached to a handle-spoon are unattainable in economic series due to their complex shapes and parts (see French Patent No. 1,419,979) or are too fragile and impossible to seal (see U.S. patent No.
- the present invention aims to make compatible the movement of a spoon and the movement of a weighted tape, mainly in a hand grenade, but also in a rifle grenade.
- the single figure is an axial section of the external parts of the grenade, the body and the rocket being simply profiled.
- the grenade has the body 1 and the rocket 2.
- the rocket 2 is surrounded axially by a ribbon 3 which retains the arming device and which is ballasted with a counterweight 4 at the outer end of its winding.
- This weighted tape 3 and 4 is covered with an elastic sealing band 5, the two ends of which overlap and are held in place by the support of the safety lever 6, said spoon, on the counterweight 4.
- the spoon 6 has a protuberance 7 which compresses and immobilizes both the elastic band 5 and the weighted tape 3 and 4.
- the upper end 8 of the spoon 6 is introduced into an orifice of the rocket, and the spoon is shaped at 9 so that it can be fixed using a known pin 10.
- This pin 10 penetrates into the support 'i for fixing, this support being disposed at an angle on the top of the body 1 of the grenade and being made integral with the rocket 2 by any locking 12: rod, key, hook, pusher, lock rotary etc.
- the rocket has a cap 13, to protect the top of the rocket.
- This cap contains a housing 14 for a part for selecting the operating mode of the rocket.
- the cap 13 can control a selector and can remain in place during the launching of the grenade.
- the body 1 may comprise axially, opposite the rocket, a means 15 for hooking a tubular tail 16 allowing rifle shooting, this tubular tail being able to slide on the flame hider of the rifle.
- This means 15 comprises a removable part, which is removed to be replaced by the end of the tubular tail.
- the grenade can be thrown by hand or shot with a rifle. In both cases, its operating mode (fusing, striking, or percussive-fusing) must be chosen, by means of the displacement of the selector, which is done directly by removing the cap 13, or indirectly by turning it so axial.
- the spoon 6 By inertia, and whatever the movement of the grenade, the spoon 6 instantly moves away from the body 1, which releases both the elastic band 5 and the counterweight 4. At the same time, also by inertia, the counterweight grows the elastic band and the spoon, before releasing.
- the spoon ejects, the elastic band leaves the grenade, and the counterweight causes the braid 3 to unfold, by inertia and by aerodynamic braking.
- the arming device is released.
- the tail tail 16 must be fixed in the body 1, after having removed the removable part from the hooking means 15.
- the support 11 is detached at an angle from the grenade, driving the spoon 6, and the flyweight pulls strongly on the ribbon, which causes the grenade to turn on the rifle and the cocking of the rocket.
- the rotation of the grenade on the rifle ensures the precision of the shooting, the trajectory not undergoing any deviation due to the absence of unbalance.

Description
In the conventional infantry armaments sector, weighted ribbons have been used for a long time which are wrapped around grenades and which hold an operating blocking part: they prevent arming. When such grenades are launched, the weighted ribbon unwinds dynamically, and when the unwinding is sufficient, arming occurs.
Thus, such grenades remain in the safety position during the start of their trajectory, which prevents any premature bursting, which could result either from the too rapid combustion of the pyrotechnic delay, or from the voluntary but too long retention of the grenade in the hand after having caused the firing of the rocket, either of the release of the grenade during the launching, or of the fall of the launcher wounded by bullet, or finally of the percussion on an obstacle close to the percussion rocket.
These weighted ribbons are inexpensive, and their operation is very safe and very regular, being sheltered from manufacturing defects or poor aging of all other delay systems (pyrotechnics, watchmaking, electronics, etc.). However, known weighted tape systems have drawbacks:
- the cap systems, where the counterweight is free as soon as the cap is removed, have caused inadvertent unwinding or inadvertent lack of lighting,
- systems where the tape is attached to a handle-spoon are unattainable in economic series due to their complex shapes and parts (see French Patent No. 1,419,979) or are too fragile and impossible to seal (see U.S. patent No. 3,112,703),
- systems where classical spoon was superimposed above the weighted tape proved unfeasible (see German Patent No. 1,099,910) due to their shapes, their complexity (many springs and weights), and their lack of tightness, the unwinding of the ribbon being hampered in particular by the disturbing and too long presence of the hook spoon,
- Finally, the system to cap and further muzzling tape weighted (see my own French patent No. 038 72.31) shows no default job --- it was adopted without reservation by the French army --- , but the users finally preferred to continue to have a spoon grenade, in order to facilitate the instruction as long as the war stock continues to contain the old spoon grenades, and this, although the spoon offers, for itself, an illusory and deceptive security, the source of countless accidents in the world.
The present invention aims to make compatible the movement of a spoon and the movement of a weighted tape, mainly in a hand grenade, but also in a rifle grenade.
The means of the invention are described below in a preferential and non-limiting manner, as shown in the drawing.
The single figure is an axial section of the external parts of the grenade, the body and the rocket being simply profiled.
The spoon 6 has a protuberance 7 which compresses and immobilizes both the elastic band 5 and the weighted tape 3 and 4.
The upper end 8 of the spoon 6 is introduced into an orifice of the rocket, and the spoon is shaped at 9 so that it can be fixed using a known pin 10.
This pin 10 penetrates into the support 'i for fixing, this support being disposed at an angle on the top of the
The rocket has a
Finally, the
The grenade can be thrown by hand or shot with a rifle. In both cases, its operating mode (fusing, striking, or percussive-fusing) must be chosen, by means of the displacement of the selector, which is done directly by removing the
To launch by hand, simply take the grenade in one hand, remove the pin 10, and launch.
By inertia, and whatever the movement of the grenade, the spoon 6 instantly moves away from the
Consequently, the spoon ejects, the elastic band leaves the grenade, and the counterweight causes the braid 3 to unfold, by inertia and by aerodynamic braking. At the end of the process, the arming device is released.
So that the course is not disturbed, it is necessary first of all that the spoon ejects very quickly, which excludes in particular any conformation in hook of its top end, and then that the rocket does not have any protuberance nor any undesirable hollows.
To fire the rifle, two additional operations are required.
Tout d'abord, il faut fixer la queue empennée 16 dans le corps 1, après avoir ôté la pièce amovible du moyen d'accrochage 15.First of all, the tail tail 16 must be fixed in the
Then, after having fitted the grenade on the rifle, it is necessary to unlock the support 11 by releasing the lock 12, but without removing the pin 10.
At the start of the shot, the support 11 is detached at an angle from the grenade, driving the spoon 6, and the flyweight pulls strongly on the ribbon, which causes the grenade to turn on the rifle and the cocking of the rocket. The rotation of the grenade on the rifle ensures the precision of the shooting, the trajectory not undergoing any deviation due to the absence of unbalance.
