Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a portable code transmitter, and to a wireless remote control system including such a transmitter.
  • Such remote control systems include garage-door opening systems, garage-lighting systems, anti-theft systems for automobiles, automobile starters, air conditioners, irrigation systems, alarm systems, indoor lights, and various types of other electrical appliances.
  • Such systems include a portable code transmitter carried by the user which, when actuated, transmits a coded signal to be received by a receiver at the remote location; the receiver actuates the remote device at the remote location when the received code matches the proper one preset in the receiver.
  • the transmitter transmits only one preselected code to operate one remotely-controlled device.
  • the user wishes to be able to remotely control a plurality of devices, it would be necessary to carry a plurality of transmitters, one for each device.
  • the user could carry one transmitter and preset the code of a plurality of receivers to match the transmitted one, but in that case the user would not be able to selectably control two or more different devices in the same general area, for example to selectively control the garage door and the garage lights.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a portable code transmitter, and also a wireless remote control system, having advantages in the above respects.
  • a portable code transmitter comprising an encoder and code selector for transmitting a coded signal for use in a wireless remote control system having a receiver including a decoder and code selector for receiving and decoding the transmitted coded signal and for controlling a device in response thereto; characterized in that the code selector in the transmitter includes storage means for storing a plurality of different codes, and a manually-operated selector switch for manually selecting one of the codes for transmission to the receiver.
  • a wireless remote control system comprising a portable code transmitter as described above for transmitting a manually selected one of a plurality of stored codes, and a receiver including a decoder and code storage means for receiving and decoding the transmitted signal and for controlling a device in response thereto.
  • the code storage means in the receiver includes a first multiple-bit binary device for storing a fixed part of the code to be stored, and a second multiple-bit binary device for storing a selectable part of the code to be stored, the second binary device including a selector switch for preselecting the code to respond to the transmitted signal.
  • the transmitter and the wireless remote control system constructed in accordance with the foregoing features may be used for selectively controlling 10 (or more) different remotely-located devices as desired.
  • the devices to be remotely controlled are the garage door and the garage lights
  • each may be provided with a selectively-coded receiver to respond to the respective code transmitted by the transmitter. If each is to be selectively actuated, then each would be allocated a different one of the 10 (or more) codes capable of being transmitted by the transmitter; but if 2 or more devices are to be always actuated at the same time, then the receivers of both would be preset to respond to the same code transmitted by the transmitter.
  • the invention thus enables a single transmitter carried by the user to be used for selectively controlling a large number of diverse devices as desired by the user.
  • the portable code transmitter, and the wireless remote control system including such a transmitter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings is designed to enable the remote control of up to 10 different devices, for example the garage door, the garage light, and various electrical appliances in a home.
  • the complete wireless remote control system includes a single, portable code transmitter 2 to be carried by the user, and a receiver unit 4 at the remote location for each device to be controlled by the transmitter.
  • the construction of the portable code transmitter unit 2 is illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4; and the construction of each of the receiver units 4 is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.
  • the transmitter 2 enables the user to select any one of a plurality of different codes (10 codes in the illustrated embodiment) to be transmitted by the transmitter, and thereby enables the user, using a single transmitter, to selectively control up to 10 different remotely-controlled devices, each supplied with a receiver unit coded in one of the 10 different codes that can be transmitted by the transmitter.
  • the portable transmitter 2 includes a housing 20 closed by a cover plate 21 which is removable in order to provide access to the parts within the housing, and particularly to enable replacing the battery 22 (Fig. 3) for supplying the power to the transmitter.
  • the transmitter includes a selector switch, generally designated 23, mounted in the transmitter housing 20; an actuator switch 24 projecting through an opening in the cover plate 21; and a visual indicator 25, e.g., an LED (light-emitting diode) also projecting through an opening in the cover 21, to provide a visual indication when the actuator button 24 has been depressed in order to transmit a coded signal.
  • Selector switch 23 may be actuated to any one of 10 different rotary positions in order to select any one of 10 different codes to be transmitted by the transmitter.
  • Selector switch 23 includes an upper depressable button 26 which, when depressed, rotates the selector switch one position in one direction, and a lower depressable button 27 which, when depressed, rotates the selector switch one position in the opposite direction. Between the two buttons 26, 27, there is disposed a window 28 displaying any one of the numbers "1-10" to identify the code selected for transmission by the selector switch.
  • Cover plate 21 further includes a label 29 listing the different devices adapted to be controlled by the transmitter according to the particular code selected as displayed in window 28 of the selector switch.
  • An apertured projection 30 is integrally formed with housing 20 to enable convenient carrying of the transmitter, e.g. on a key chain or the like.
  • Fig. 3 illustrates the construction of the transmitter 2 when cover plate 21 has been removed; and Fig. 4 illustrates the electrical circuit of the transmitter.
  • the transmitter housing 20 mounts the selector switch 23 in an end wall of the housing with the two depressable buttons 26, 27 projecting from the end wall for convenient access by the user in order to rotate the switch to the appropriate rotary position for selecting the desired code to be transmitted.
  • End wall 21 of the transmitter housing 20 is recessed, as shown at 32, at the location of the projecting buttons 26, 27 so as to provide a relatively flush outer face.
  • housing 20 includes a transistor 33 which transmits the carrier radio signal, and a capacitor C1 which may be adjusted in order to preset the frequency of the carrier signal.
  • the transmitter further includes a code storage device 35 for storing any one of a number of preselected codes, and an encoder 36 for encoding the carrier signal with the code selected by the code storage device.
  • the code selected for transmission is a 12-bit binary code. It includes a fixed part consisting of 8 bits fixed by code storage device 35, and a selectable part of 4 bits selected by the rotary selector switch 23.
  • the fixed storage device 35 thus includes 8 switches 37, one for each of the 8 bits of the fixed part of the selected code. Each switch 37 may be manually moved to one of two positions, to preselect either a "1" or "0" for the respective bit of the code.
  • These switches 37 are preset by the user in order to select a portion of the codes which will be common for all 10 different codes to be selected by the selector switch 23, but which will distinguish all 10 selectable codes from codes used by others.
  • Selector switch 23 is preset, preferably at the factory, to produce 10 different 4-bit binary values, each for one of the 10 different rotary positions of the selector switch.
  • the code to be transmitted at any particular time is selected by the positions of the 8 switches 37 of the code storage device 35 which define the first 8 bits of the selected code, and the rotary position of the selector switch 23 which defines the remaining 4 bits of the selected code.
  • the 12-bit code is inputted into encoder 36 which modulates the carrier signal generated by the circuit including capacitor C1 and inductor L1 and transmitted by transmitter 33.
  • buttons 26 are depressed to increment the rotary switch in one direction, and button 27 is depressed to increment it in the other direction, until the rotary switch is incremented to the appropriate position, as indicated by the number in the window 28 between the two buttons, to transmit the desired one of the 10 different codes that may be selected.
  • the receiver unit 4 is illustrated in Figs. 2, 5 and 6. It will be appreciated that one receiver unit 4 is provided for each of the different devices to be remotely controlled by the portable transmitter unit 2, and would be coded to respond to one of the 10 different codes capable of being transmitted by the transmiter unit.
  • Each receiver unit 4 includes a housing 40 containing the receiver circuitry, generally designated 41 in Fig. 2; a decoder 43 corresponding to encoder 36 in the transmitter unit 2, for decoding the signal received by the receiver unit; and code storage means including a fixed coding device 45 corresponding to coding device 35 in the transmitter unit, and a variable code selector 46 corresponding to the variable code selector switch 23 in the transmitter.
  • Code storage device 45 also includes 8 switches 47 manually preset table to define the 8 bits of the 12-bit binary code corresponding to device 35 in the transmitter unit 2; and the selector switch 46 in the receiver unit 4 is also a 10-position rotary selector switch which defines, according to its position, the 4 bits of the 12-bit code.
  • the rotary selector switch 46 in the reciever unit 4 is preset to a selected position according to the code to which the device of the respective receiver unit is to respond.
  • the decoder 43 When the coded signal received by the respective reciever unit 4 matches the code stored in the receiver unit by code storage device 45 and rotary switch 46, the decoder 43 outputs a "valid" signal via a transistor 50 to the receiver circuitry 41, which signal actuates a relay 52 to control the device (not shown) in accordance with the received signal. If there is no match between the received code and that stored in the respective unit, decoder 43 will not output a "valid" signal to transistor 50, and therefore the load device 52 will not be acutated.
  • the connection between the receiver circuitry 41 and relay 52 controlling the load device includes a 2-position jumper 54. In one position, jumper 54 effects a momentary actuation of relay 52, and thereby of the load device controlled by it; and in another position, it effects an "on” or “off” actuation of the relay.
  • Receiver unit 4 further includes a terminal panel 56 (Fig. 5).
  • the user first presets the 8 switches 37 in the coding device 35 of the transmitter unit 2, and the corresponding 8 switches 47 in the coding device 45 of the receiver unit 4, according to the first 8 bits of all the different codes to be used by the user.
  • the 4 remaining bits of the code are prefixed in the rotary selector switch 23 according to the 10 different rotary positions of the selector switch.
  • the user then presets the rotary selector switch 46 in the receiver unit 4 to the specific code to which the receiver unit is to respond in accordance with the preselected position of the selector switch 23 in the transmitter unit.
  • Transmitter unit 2 may thus, be used to selectively control 10 different load devices, by merely providing each load device with a receiver unit 4 preset to one of the 10 different codes defined by the 10 different positions of the rotary selector switch 23 in the transmitter unit 2.
  • a receiver unit 4 preset to one of the 10 different codes defined by the 10 different positions of the rotary selector switch 23 in the transmitter unit 2.
  • the current position of the rotary selector switch 23 is displayed in window 23, and the load device to be controlled by the respective position of the rotary selector switch 23 is displayed on tag 29 carried by the cover plate 21 of the transmitter unit.
  • button 24 of the transmitter unit 2 is depressed, thereby transmitting the carrier signal, coded with the selected code, to the receiver unit at the remote location of the load device.
  • decoder 43 of the receiver unit will output a "valid" signal to transistor 50, which causes the receiver circuit 41 to energize relay 52, and thereby to actuate the selected load device.
  • the user merely advances selector switch 23 to the appropriate position, as indicated by tag 29, to transmit the appropriate code for that device when button 24 of the transmitter unit is depressed.
