  • Thermoplastic compositions of polyphenylene ether (oxide) resins and high impact polystyrenes are known to be useful for injection molding into a variety of articles characte ized by highly desirable property profiles. With the wider use of these compositions in products where good flame resistance is an important requirement, the need has grown for additives that upgrade the flame retardance of the composition without significantly detracting from other desired properties.
  • Most flame retardant additives for polyphenylene ether compositions have been non-polyme ic compounds that are relatively low in molecular weight. Many of these tend to juice or bloom, that is, in essence to volatilize or migrate to the surface of the composition during the Tnolding process.

Abstract

Le pouvoir ignifuge de mélanges de résine d'éther de polyphénylène et de polystyrène à impact élevé est amélioré en incorporant audit mélange à la fois un polystyrène bromé et de l'oxyde d'antimoine, lesquels agissent en combinaison cynergique dans les compositions. Ladite combinaison ignifuge non seulement présente une bonne stabilité thermique mais, à la différence de nombreuses préparations ignifuges antérieures de volatilité supérieure, résiste également à la migration en surface.
