Definitions

  • the counterpoised door is a well-known type, especially used for garages, the lower end being guided in relation to the fixed frame round the aperture for the door.
  • Such doors are articulated at their sides by supporting rocker levers coupled to the top of the frame.
  • balancing traction springs are articulated uppermost to the top of the frame, and below, by suitable means, to the sides of the counterpoised door occupying a position appreciably lower than those at which the rocker levers articulate.
  • the patent reference FR-A-2 501 772 corresponding to the preamble of claim 1 discloses a device for hitching the balancing spring for the counterpoised door, said device comprising a curved arm substantially perpendicular to the plane of the door, articulated on an inner bracket on said door and immobilisable on completion of its adjustment.
  • the spring is hooked to the end of the curved arm by means of a band that passes below said arm and remains adherent to it so that, when the door is closed, the spring lies almost in contact with the internal plane of the door.
  • the curved part of the arm moves away from the band therefore the spring pulls directly on the end of said arm creating a moment of forces tending to swing the lower part of the door upwards.
  • the extent to which the curved arm projects over the door does not change when the door's vertical closed position alters to its horizontal open position.
  • the curved arm For purposes of storage and transport the curved arm must be tied down once having rotated it against the door to reduce bulk.
  • Subject of the invention corresponding to the characterising portion of claim 1 is a counterpoised door, especially a garage door, supported at each edge side by a rocker lever articulated above to the door frame and below to the side of the door itself.
  • a traction spring with upper articulation common to the articulation of the rocker lever on the door frame, balances said door to assist its being opened.
  • the spring is hooked below to the lower end of a lever articulated at the top onto the rocker lever.
  • the position of said small lever in relation to the side of the door is established by a strut articulated above at an intermediate point in said lever and below to the side of the door.
  • the sum of the distance between articulation of the small lever on the rocker lever and articulation of the latter on the edge side of the door plus the distance between said articulation of the rocker lever and articulation of the strut on the edge side of the door is less than the sum of the distance between the articulations of the lever on the rocker lever and on the strut and the length of said strut.
  • the small lever consists of two sections which between them form an obtuse angle.
  • said angle is substantially the same as the angle formed between the strut and the first section of the small lever.
  • the described device produces several favourable effects. Since, when the door is in the closed position, there is substantial alignment among the rocker lever, the spring, the lever and the strut, the spring's stresses are discharged onto the door frame making said door, when closed, very stable.
  • the second section of the above lever that between articulation of the spring and articulation on the strut, is slightly angled, with apex towards the inside of the door, compared with the first section between articulation on the strut and that on the rocker lever.
  • Length of the strut, of the first section of the lever and the distance between the articulations of the rocker lever on the side of the door and on the lever, are such that their algebraic sum is found to be greater than the distance between the articulation of the rocker lever and articulation of the strut on the side of the door, to such an extent as to determine, when the door is closed, an angle, between the first section of the lever and the strut, substantially equal to that between the two sections of the lever.
  • the spring is hooked at the lower end of the above small lever by means of a rigid threaded tie rod and a pair of nuts, or other similar means, to allow spring tension to be adjusted as preferred.
  • the invention offers considerable advantages.
  • Preparation of the door for mounting, after position of its parts for storage and transport, involves nothing at all as the entire supporting and balancing device assumes the correct position spontaneously, when the door is aligned to its frame, practically remaining within the thickness of the door itself.
  • Fig. 1 Side view of the door in three positions: closed, half open, open.
  • Components are given the same numbers in the three positions of the door; when half open, however, the sign (′) is added to the number, and when open, the sign ( ⁇ ) is added.
  • the lower articulation (42) of the rocker lever (43) is situated in the side (41) of the door (40).
  • the lever (44) is articuled on said lever in the pin (47).
  • the balancing spring (50) is held to the cross bar (51) of the frame by an upper coupling (60), and below to the pin (48) of the extremity (46) of the arm by means of a tie rod (52) with threading (53) and lock nuts (54), (55).
  • the strut (56) connects the intermediate section of the arm to the side of the door by means of articulations (58) and (57) respectively, creating the two sections of the lever (45), (46).
  • the extremity (46) of the lever (44) is set at an angle, in relation to the first section (45), almost equivalent to the angle made by the strut in relation to said section (45) when the door is being closed.
