Abstract

The fibrous material consists essentially of a mixture of low-modulus aramid fibres and of high-modulus aramid fibres, with a high-modulus aramid fibre content of between 20 and 25% of the total weight of the mixture. A proportion of the low-modulus aramid fibres is optionally replaced with fire-resistant viscose fibres. Application of this fibrous material to the production of clothing for protection against heat attack.

Description

The present invention relates to a fibrous material based on aramid fibers, with improved resistance.

Aramid fibers are fibers based on aromatic polyamide which are widely used in technical fields where high mechanical and thermal performance is sought.

A suitable use for these fibers is in the field of protective clothing against thermal attack.

  • - les fibres dites haut module, à hautes performances mécaniques et thermiques ;
However, we know that all aramid fibers can be classified into two categories:
  • - so-called high modulus fibers, with high mechanical and thermal performance;
  • - the so-called low modulus fibers, having good thermal performance and benefiting from an excellent textile feel; unfortunately, their mechanical strength is low, and they also have poor abrasion resistance.

So-called high modulus fibers would therefore seem more suitable for the production of protective clothing; unfortunately, when used alone, they do not provide satisfactory wearing comfort; on the other hand, they have no affinity for dyes and, therefore, their appearance cannot be modified by dyeing.

The Applicant has discovered that it is possible to dramatically reinforce the mechanical properties of low modulus aramid fiber yarns, if a relatively small amount is added to them, being above 20% and, preferably , between 20 and 25%, of high modulus aramid fibers.

The increase in the resistance of yarns obtained from this mixture of fibers is quite surprising, since it reaches and even exceeds 40% compared to the resistance of yarns of low modulus aramid fibers used alone.

According to another embodiment of the invention, part of the low modulus aramid fibers is replaced by viscose fibers called "flame retardant viscose", which further widens the field of application of the mixture according to the invention to garments of protection against thermal attack.

The fibrous material comprises approximately 47% of low modulus aramid fibers, approximately 30% of fireproof viscose fibers and approximately 23% of high modulus aramid fibers.

This transformation of the continuous filaments is carried out according to a cracking process by controlled stretching and breaking; it is carried out on multifilament cables of unitary fibers, the titer of which is between 0.8 and 6 dtex. Long fibers are thus obtained, which makes it possible to spin a very wide range of titles between 1/1 (1000tex) and 200/1 (5tex).

The intimate mixing of the fibers thus obtained, to which the flame retardant viscose is optionally added in the form of 80 mm cut fibers, is carried out by any process known per se, upstream of the preparation.

Complementary finishing operations, such as twisting or wiring, are then carried out on the products obtained.

This provides an extremely advantageous fibrous material, since it has the main advantages of low modulus aramid fibers, among which may be mentioned the wearing comfort and the dyeing ability, improved resistance properties, and this while retaining the excellent properties of resistance to thermal exposures, as well as to certain chemicals, which makes it quite suitable for the production of protective clothing against thermal aggressions.
