Abstract

A method is disclosed for finishing knitted fabric to prevent cut edges from rolling up while the knitted fabric is being converted into garments. 0.2 to 1 percent, based on the weight of the knitted fabric, of a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, the alkyl groups preferably being lower alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and at least 10% of the amino groups being present in the quaternary form, is applied to the knitted fabric. The copolymer is preferably applied to the fabric from an aqueous solution.

Description

The invention relates to a method for equipping knitted fabrics to prevent the cutting edges from rolling in during assembly. A knitted fabric is to be understood as a flat knitted or knitted textile.

It is a known disturbing property of knitwear, especially fine knitwear, that it curls up at the cut edges when being cut. This will further process the cut goods, e.g. sewing, significantly hampered.

Attempts have already been made to solidify the cut edges of knitwear in such a way that they do not roll up. However, this method can only be used for relatively large parts. Such large parts arise, for example, if you first manufacture the knitted fabric in the form of an endless tube and then cut it open on one long side. The method fails when assembling a piece of fabric obtained in this way, since the cut edges created during the cutting cannot be glued.

No. 4,318,956 describes a process for finishing polyester fabrics or knitted fabrics, in which the textiles are treated with a polymer which contains free amino groups or salts thereof and carboxyl groups. The polymer is cured on the fiber at elevated temperatures. The ratio of the amino or amine salt groups to the carboxyl groups should be 100: 1 to 1: 1. These polymers do not contain quaternary nitrogen atoms. The polyester fabrics or knitted fabrics treated with these polymers have improved dirt-repellent properties.

In EU-OS 0 129 322 a method is described to improve the shrink resistance of wool. The wool is first subjected to an oxidation pretreatment, then treated with the aqueous solution of a polymer which contains quaternary ammonium groups, which are derived in particular from an aminoacrylic monomer. The wool treated in this way is then dried.

The invention is based on the object of finding equipment which is applied to the knitted fabric and prevents it from curling up in the area of the cut edges during assembly. These agents should be able to be applied from an aqueous solution, be effective in a small amount and, if possible, not affect the handle of the goods. The means should in particular be able to be applied by the manufacturer without impeding the further handling of the knitted fabric. A solution to this problem could not be found in US Pat. No. 4,318,956 mentioned in the prior art and EU-OS 0 129 322.

Surprisingly, however, it has now been found that, according to the invention, this object is achieved by 0.2 to 1% by weight, based on the knitted fabric, of a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate or dialkylaminomethacrylate, the alkyl radicals preferably being lower Are alkyl radicals with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and at least 10% of the amino groups are in quaternary form. The alkyl radicals are preferably methyl or ethyl radicals.

A process is particularly preferred which is characterized in that a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate is applied to the knitted fabric, at least 10% of the amino group being present in quaternary form.

Copolymers of 90 to 98 mol% of N-vinylpyrrolidone and 10 to 2 mol% of dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate are particularly preferably applied to the fibers.

The copolymers should preferably have a molecular weight of> 100,000, preferably> 500,000, in particular> 1,000,000.

The copolymers are preferably applied to the knitted fabric from an aqueous solution, e.g. by means of the usual coloring preparations, such as reel runners. Solutions with a content of about 0.01 to 1.0% by weight of active ingredient are used. Due to its substantivity, the active ingredient is absorbed by the knitted fabric.

The knitted fabric finished according to the method according to the invention can be assembled in any manner without the cut edges resulting from the cutting curling up. The finished knitted fabric maintains its flat shape and can therefore be further processed, in particular sewn, without difficulty. This enables a significantly increased processing speed.

The knitted fabric equipped according to the invention shows no disturbing change in the handle. It can be sewn perfectly, since the other properties of the finished knitted fabric do not change. It is therefore not necessary to remove the high molecular weight compounds from the knitted fabric after it has been processed. Since the effect of preventing the cutting edges from curling is achieved even with a very small amount of the polymeric compounds, the use of the method according to the invention increases the cost of the product only insignificantly. A possibly slightly higher price is more than offset by the significantly increased processing speed.

The method according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the following example.

Beispielexample

In a reel runner, a light cotton and knitwear is treated for 10 minutes with 0.5% solutions of the polymers a) to g) at 20 ° C and a liquor pH of approx. 6. The knitted tubes are then dewatered in the usual way, opened and dried on a stenter at 130 ° C in about 3 minutes.

The evaluation of the treated knitted fabrics is shown in the following tables.

It can be seen from the tables that a polymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone alone (polymer e) has no influence on the curling behavior of the treated knitted fabric. Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate can only be polymerized to homopolymers with a molecular weight of about 135,000. If such a homopolymer (polymer f) is used, the curling behavior of the treated knitted fabric improves, but the treated knitted fabric has an inadmissibly hard grip.

Copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, which do not have any quaternary ammonium groups, show insufficient absorption behavior.

Figure imgb0001
Figure imgb0002
In view of these comparative experiments, it was therefore surprising that the copolymers used in the process according to the invention, in addition to good pulling behavior, prevent the cut edges from rolling in, but do not adversely affect the feel of the fabric, but rather rather improve the feel of the fabric.
