Definitions
- the present invention relates to improvements made to electrical connectors, in particular to waterproof connectors immersed in a liquid, comprising two connector elements which can be mechanically coupled to one another, to make the electrical contacts arranged respectively mechanically and electrically two by two.
- at least one of the connector elements comprising an insulating body which is pierced with longitudinal housings respectively housing the contacts and which is itself retained and sheltered, at least in part, in an external housing, means of clamping of the connector element on an electric cable electrically connected to the contacts being further provided.
- the object of the invention is essentially to propose an electrical connector of the above type which gives better satisfaction than those known to date, in particular to propose an electrical connector which is protected against a corrosive environment (in particular sea water ) and under pressure (immersion at great depth) and which is arranged, structurally, such that a traction exerted on a cable results in a non-destructive separation of the two connector elements (so-called "fuse" connector) and not by pulling out the cable.
- the projections of the collar are formed by ears formed by the collar.
- the half-flanges have complementary reliefs for positioning and transverse locking.
- the insulating body comprises, in the rear part of its external surface, a bead projecting radially and the half-flanges, in their part surrounding the part rear of the insulating body, have an internal annular groove capable of cooperating by fitting with the aforementioned bead.
- the half-flanges have a rim projecting towards the outside and the assembly means comprise clips which overlap the half-flanges and which, in their zone situated opposite the abutting edges of the half-flanges, each have a notch enclosing the two abutting edges of the two half-flanges.
- the clips are provided with elastically deformable arms enveloping the half-flanges and the ends of which snap elastically into retaining cavities dug in the external surface of the half-flanges.
- the housing is constituted by a sleeve made of a semi-rigid material, having elastic deformation properties, and this sleeve elastically encloses a rear part of the insulating body, the clamping means and a portion of the cable; in the event of immersion under high pressure, auxiliary collars enclose the housing around the insulating body and around the cable.
- a connector is obtained which perfectly resists corrosive environments since all the relatively vulnerable constituent bodies (such as the electrical contacts and the stripped ends of the conductors), including the metal collar enclosing the cable sheath. , are sealed by the external protective housing; this connector withstands high pressures, and can therefore be submerged at great depth, because the tightness of the deformable housing (possibly reinforced by auxiliary collars) is increased the higher the pressure; finally any traction carried out on the cable is transmitted, not by the electrical conductors, but by the mechanical "bridge" constituted by the collar integral with the half-flanges themselves integral with the insulating body: in the event of excessive traction it will result in a uncoupling of the two connector elements, and not a tearing of the electrical conductors which are not subjected to any force.
- the connector element A which is shown therein comprises an insulating body 2 provided with longitudinal housings 3 in which are housed and retained electrical contacts 4, which here are of the male type with pin-shaped active ends 5.
- the insulating body 2 At its anterior end (that is to say that facing the other connector element with which the element A is coupled), the insulating body 2 is hollowed out to form a chamber 6, open towards the front, in which house the pins 5.
- the insulating body On its external surface, the insulating body has, in the vicinity of its anterior end, an annular projection 7 shaped with an anterior radial surface inclined to form a ramp and with a posterior radial surface constituting a retaining shoulder . Behind the annular projection 7 is provided an annular stop 8.
- Each contact 4 has an annular narrowing 9.
- One or more pins 10 are engaged in the insulating body 2, transverse to the contacts 4, so as to cooperate with the annular narrowing 9 of the contacts and to prevent any longitudinal displacement of these.
- the insulating body 2 has a zone 11 of smaller diameter having a radial annular bead 12 projecting outwards.
- a metal collar 16 is tightened around the end of the sheath 13 of a cable 14, the conductors 15 of which are connected (for example soldered) to the tails of the contacts 4, a metal collar 16 is tightened.
- the collar 16 has two diametrically opposite ears 17: these ears open before mounting the collar on the cable are tightened with pliers and deformed in 0, as best seen in FIG. 5, to cause the clamping of the collar on the cable 14 .
- each half-flange 18 has a recess 12b which cooperates with the aforementioned key 12a of the insulating body 2, so as to secure the rotation in rotation of the half-flanges 18 and of the insulating body 2.
- each half-flange 18 has a recess 19 capable of receiving one of the ears 17 of the collar 16, as well as an annular groove 20 arranged to receive the bead 12; in addition, an internal protuberance 21 can be provided, which is shaped towards the rear to form a radial stop 22 against which the front end of the sheath 13 of the cable 14 bears.
- the structure of the two half-flanges 18 is better visible on Figures 4 and 5.
- each tenon 23 and each groove 24 extends only over a half-perimeter, the other half-perimeter being equipped in reverse (groove and tenon respectively ).
- two clips 26 are provided which each have a notch 27 enclosing two protruding flanges 28 joined together, belonging respectively to the two half-flanges and located at vicinity of the edges in mutual support thereof.
- Each clip 26 is retained in an overlapping position on the half-flanges by means of two elastically deformable arms 26a which partially enclose the two half-flanges respectively and whose ends in the form of a retaining finger 26b snap into grooves 25 retaining holes dug in the outer surface of the half-flanges and angularly offset by approximately 90 * with respect to the above flanges 28.
- the cable 14 is made mechanically integral, axially, with the insulating body 2, by means of the half-flanges 18 and the collar 16, without the conductors 15 being subjected to any mechanical force.
- a housing 29 constituted by a sleeve made of a material such as an elastomer, having a relative elasticity and molded in shape to internally elastically match the outline of the connector: this sleeve tightly encloses the cable 14, the half-flanges 18 and the insulating body 2 behind the annular stopper 8.
- two additional external collars 30 can be provided, arranged around the housing 29, respectively around the cable 14 at the rear and around the insulating body 2 at the front.
- FIG. 2 shows, in the same way, an element B of electrical connector, arranged on the same principle as the element A previously described and couplable with the latter.
- the same reference numerals will therefore be used to designate the elements of element B identical to those of element A.
- a “'” will be assigned to the reference numbers of the elements of element B which correspond, in a structurally different form, to organs of element A.
- the insulating body 2 'of the element B contains female contacts 4', of the socket type, which are completely sheltered in their respective housings 3 '.
- the front end of the insulating body 2 ′ has a reduced diameter, corresponding to the inside diameter of the chamber 6 so as to penetrate therein during the coupling of the two elements A and B.
- the housing 29 extends forward up to the height of the front face of the insulating body 2'.
- the housing 29 'does not follow the contour of the insulating body 2', but is on the contrary shaped to remain at a radial distance from the latter by delimiting an annular cavity 33 intended to receive the anterior annular portion, delimiting chamber 6, of the insulating body 2 of element A.
- the front end of the housing 29 ′ has a radial rim 31 directed towards the inside and delimits a bearing surface 32 capable, during the coupling of the two elements A and B, to cooperate with the retaining shoulder formed by the posterior radial surface of the annular projection 7.
- element B is shaped exactly like element A, in particular as regards the arrangements in accordance with the invention.
- the front edge 31 of the housing 29 'of the element B is engaged between the annular stop 8 and the annular projection 7 of the insulating body 2 of the element B.
- L' sealing is ensured by the rim 31 which elastically encloses the annular surface of the insulating body 2 included between the stop 8 and the projection 7 at the same time as the portion of the housing 29 'situated behind the rim 31 which elastically encloses the external surface of the body insulator located in front of the projection 7.

Abstract
