Description

The invention relates to an arrangement for the outlet opening in the print head of a multicolor ink writing device according to the preamble of patent claim 1.

Terminal or output devices in modern office communication or data processing systems require both the display of text and graphics. A high output speed is required for the text display, whereby reduced requirements for the font quality are accepted. In this context, one speaks of a so-called draft quality or draft quality DQ. In addition, there should also be the possibility of displaying texts in very good font quality. In this case, you accept a reduced output speed. This font quality is known as the so-called Near Letter Quality NLQ. A multicolored display is increasingly required for graphic display.

The so-called ink writing devices have proven to be suitable as devices which can meet these requirements. These are devices that have a so-called ink print head for displaying characters or graphics. As is generally known, such an ink print head has a plurality of outlet openings designed as so-called nozzles, from which individual droplets are ejected under the action of individually controllable piezoelectric drive elements, which form the desired character or the desired graphic pattern in a grid pattern on a recording medium moved relative to the print head. Devices that meet the requirements mentioned above suffer from the disadvantage that only one of the requirements is fully met, the others are only offered with a greater or lesser loss of quality.

The object of the invention is to provide an arrangement for the nozzle outlet opening of the printhead of an ink writing device, with which the display of texts is possible both in draft and in fine writing quality, and with which multicolored texts or graphics of high quality can also be displayed.

This object is achieved by the characterizing features of patent claim 1.

The invention is explained below with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing. The exemplary embodiment shown shows a write head 1 of an ink writing device known per se, in front of which a recording medium 2 is located. The print head 1 essentially consists of an ink supply system 3, which is connected on the one hand to the ink channels 8 running inside the print head 1 and on the other hand to different ink containers 10, 11, 12, 13 which contain ink of different colors. It is known to use black, cyan, magenta and yellow inks to represent multicolored characters and graphics. The ink channels 8 are each assigned individually controllable drive elements 9, preferably piezoelectric transducers. They end at the front end of the write head 1 facing the recording medium 2 on a nozzle plate 14, from the outlet openings of which individual ink droplets are ejected at a relatively high speed and sprayed against the recording medium 2 in accordance with the control.

According to the invention, the outlet openings of the write head 1 are arranged such that a first vertical row of n outlet openings, in the example the n = 9 outlet openings 40 to 49, is provided for the ejection of ink droplets of black color. These are referred to below as black nozzles. Each m-outlet openings in the example, the m = 5 outlet openings 50 to 54, 60 to 64 and 70 to 74, are provided for ejecting ink droplets of different colors. These are referred to below as paint nozzles. These are the basic colors in the so-called subtractive color mixing system, in the example the colors cyan, magenta and yellow. All outlet openings 40 to 49, 50 to 54, 60 to 64 and 70 to 74 are each arranged in the vertical direction at a distance a, where a is determined by the grid provided for the character display and is selected such that the individual ink dots plotted in the grid Representation in the so-called design quality corresponds. At least the number n of black nozzles is selected so that it covers the height of a writing line provided by the character grid. This ensures that a representation in the design quality can take place in a single pass. The number of m outlet openings for the paint nozzles can be smaller (m n). However, they are arranged at the same height in the horizontal direction as the black nozzles. This enables the printing dots of the color black to no longer be formed by the mixture of the three primary colors in multi-color printing, but rather to be created by ink droplets of the color black.

The structure of a character in the design quality (DQ) and in the fine writing quality (NLQ) is explained below with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.

Die Zeichen einer Schreibzeile werden3, a 9 x 9 character grid is defined for the display of text in the design quality. For the sake of clarity, only the outlet openings 40 to 49 of the nozzles of the write head 1, which is located behind the recording medium 2, have been entered with dashed lines. The distance a of the outlet openings 40 to 49 is in this example a = 0.42 mm (1/60 inch). This covers the standard height of 0.42 mm (1/6 inch) through n = 10 outlet openings. While characters are being imprinted, the write head 1 in the example moves from left to right at a constant speed. In a manner not shown here, droplet ejection from selected outlet openings takes place at each time of printing via a printer control. The printing times are hereby defined the grid columns S 1 to S9. In this way, as shown in Fig. 2, the character "A" is constructed in design quality. The characters on a writing line are

This is followed by a transport of the recording medium 2 by one line height, so that the next write line can be printed in the same way while the print head is retracting.

In principle, colored characters are printed in the same way, the recording medium after completion of a run in the exemplary embodiment shown, in which m = - n,

2 um eine halbe Zeilenhöhe weiter transportiert wird.2 is transported by half a line height.

The display of characters or graphics in the higher quality NLQ font quality takes place in the so-called multipass mode. This is understood to mean that several passes per writing line take place for the representation of the characters, the relative movement between the recording medium and the writing head taking place in fine stages on the one hand and the printing cycle being output in accordance with a fine division of the raster cycle. The first measure is implemented by a micro-line circuit. The second measure is achieved in that the printer control generates additional pressure pulses in so-called half-steps. 3 shows that, under these conditions, a character is displayed in a 17 x 17 grid. The character “A” is printed in such a way that the dashed head 1 is first moved in the direction 15, the printer control unit emitting pressure pulses at all horizontal printing points, namely at the screen columns determined by a half-printing step. In this way, the horizontal line of the character "A" is formed by a correspondingly larger number of pressure points. After reaching the end of the writing line, the printer controller triggers an advance of the recording medium 2, which corresponds to half the distance a between the outlet openings 40 to 49. The write head 1 now occupies position 16 with respect to the record carrier 2. When the print head 1 returns in the direction 17, the vertical and the oblique lines of the character “A” are thus filled.
