Abstract

A display unit in which characters, symbols or images are formed by the presence or absence of physical display elements in rows and columns, and the display elements are put into a visible or invisible position in one direction (eg column direction) virtually simultaneously by means of a setting device driven (eg electromagnetically) by a data processing device, and one after another in the other direction (eg row direction) by moving the display elements past the setting device, and in which when the next axis (column or row) to be set during this movement has reached the setting position the data processing device is transmitted a return pulse which releases the drive of the setting device. Using a transport tape in which the display elements have been only partially punched out, it is possible for the display elements to be moved with the aid of a setting device in such a way that they come to be situated in front of or behind separating strips in the event of further transport of the transport tape. Since the transport tape with the display elements has a colour which contrasts with the separating strips, the set characters can be unambiguously perceived.
