Abstract

An oxygen reducing electrode has a low ash carbon substrate, such as coconut shells converted to carbon. The substrate is loaded with a catalyst such as i) platinum phthalocyanine or ii) lead-ruthenium oxide. In this second case (ii), in order to produce the electrode, lead ions are adsorbed on the substrate, which is then treated with a solution of ruthenium oxide (VI), to cause precipitation of the catalyst on the substrate.
