Definitions
- the invention relates to a millimeter wave circulator specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- Circulators of this type are usually designed as Y circulators and are used as a non-reciprocal waveguide branch, for example for transmitter / receiver decoupling or for decoupling a synchronizing millimeter wave source from a reflection amplifier.
- the bandwidths of such circulators are typically 1-2%. Because the resonance frequency of the ferrite resonators depends primarily on their geometric dimensions, because of the small possible bandwidths, the mechanical tolerances in ferrite production and assembly have to meet high requirements, e.g. B. a minimum lockout must be maintained at a predetermined operating frequency. To increase the bandwidth, it is known to reduce the quality of the circulator arrangement, but this is always associated with an undesirable increase in the transmission loss.
- the invention is based on the object of specifying a circulator of the type mentioned at the outset with a bandwidth which is substantially greater than in the prior art.
- the resonance frequency of a circular cylindrical ferrite body of given material in the circulator arrangement is a variable depending on the type of the excited oscillation mode and the geometric dimensions of the ferrite body.
- a given ferrite body thus has a large number of resonance frequencies in accordance with the different vibration modes (resonances).
- the geometric dimensions of the ferrite body are defined in the frequency-determining dimensions, that is to say the diameter and / or height of the ferrite cylinder.
- the ferrite body in the circulator arrangement is excited in several and higher oscillation modes (resonances) than the basic oscillation mode by the wave oscillating with the operating frequency of the millimeter-wave arrangement and fed to the circulator.
- the resonance frequencies of the two excited vibration modes are close to one another, preferably have a frequency spacing of less than 10% of their arithmetic mean.
- These vibration modes then exist at the same time with a correspondingly broadband excitation and the transmission characteristics corresponding to the individual vibration modes complement one another to form a new characteristic with a substantially larger operating bandwidth.
- the manufacturing specifications are then advantageously set up in such a way that the center of the operating band coincides with the predetermined operating frequency with comparatively low demands on the tolerances. Due to the much higher operating range, deviations due to manufacturing tolerances can be accepted to a much greater extent.
- an embodiment of the invention is to be regarded as particularly advantageous in which the ferrite body is dimensioned such that the operating frequency is in the range of the resonance frequencies of the ferrite body in the H O11 and H 211 vibration modes.
- the resonance frequencies of the ferrite body are understood to be the resonance frequencies of a cavity resonator with metallic walls enclosing the ferrite body. (Indexing after general naming of resonances in circular cylindrical resonators, see e.g. B. Meinke / Gundlach, Taschenbuch der Hochfrequenztechnik). With a required blocking attenuation of at least 20 dB, this arrangement has a relative bandwidth of around 8%.
- the resonance frequencies in both vibration modes essentially depend only on the height of the ferrite body.
- the height can be defined as the distance between two plane-parallel surfaces during manufacture, e.g. B. by lapping with much greater accuracy than the diameter of a circular cylinder.
- the function of the circulator is strongly influenced by the boundary conditions that apply to the resonance body at its interfaces. All-round magnetic interfaces are required in the dielectric for the particularly advantageous H 011 and H 211 vibration modes, ie both the resonance field in the ferrite body and the exciting wave field should have no surface-parallel component of the magnetic field at the interfaces of the ferrite body.
- the dielectric spacer washers mechanically fixing the ferrite body between the ferrite body and the waveguide bases are matched in their dielectric constant to the wafer thickness and the operating frequency by suitable choice of material in such a way that the wafer thickness of a quarter wavelength is based on a thickness in the disks perpendicular to the waveguide bases propagating wave at the operating frequency (center frequency of the operating frequency band) corresponds.
- the Waveguide bases given electrical short circuit transformed into an electrical open circuit at the plane-parallel interfaces of the ferrite body.
- the waveguide branching is expanded to form a circular cylindrical cavity resonator.
- the frequency dependence of the blocking attenuation in FIG. 1 is outlined, for example an operating bandwidth of only 1-2%, for example at an operating frequency of 100 GHz. B. only 1-2 GHz bandwidth.
- a circulator according to the invention results in a frequency dependence of the blocking attenuation, as shown in FIG. 2 is outlined.
- the two resonance frequencies f and f 2 are so close together that the blocking attenuation is better than the required 20 dB anywhere between the two attenuation maxima.
- a circulator according to the invention is considerably less sensitive to tolerances in the manufacture and assembly of the ferrite bodies, so that adjustments are generally not required subsequently or can be carried out with little effort.
- the electric field has no component in the direction of the axis of the circular cylindrical ferrite body.
- the magnetic field lines are spatial curves that reach into the space in front of and behind the image plane.
- FIG. 5, FIG. 6 show in sectional images a circulator arrangement in which these oscillation modes H 011 and H 211 are excited.
- the excitation takes place in a manner familiar to the person skilled in the art via the waveguide connecting arm 1 with a shaft, for example of the rectangular waveguide mode H 10 .
- the Y waveguide branch is expanded to form a circular cylindrical cavity resonator 2.
- One of the waveguide bases of the resonator is provided with a linear taper 3 which reduces the waveguide height for impedance matching. This reduction in height can also take the form of a circular step.
- the circular-cylindrical ferrite body 4 is insulated from both sides of the waveguide by two plastic disks 5.
- the ferrite body has the shape of a flat disc.
- the dimensions are around 0.5 mm high and 1.5 mm in diameter for an operating frequency of around 93 GHz.
- the plastic discs have a slightly larger diameter than the ferrite body and have a collar at their edge into which the ferrite body is inserted.
- the plastic discs in turn are inserted into blind holes in the base sides of the cavity resonator. This results in an independent centering of the ferrite body in the center of the cavity.
- the depth of the blind holes is as small as possible in order to keep field distortions of the step at the edge of the hole low.
- the two permanent magnets 6 generate the required constant magnetic field.
- FIG. 7 shows a preferred, because particularly advantageous, circulator arrangement as a sectional view in side view.
- the Y waveguide branching extended to the cavity resonator 2 has no base-side tapering here, which is advantageous both from a mechanical and an electromagnetic point of view.
- the adjustment here is made exclusively by the choice of material for the dielectric spacer discs 5.
- the dimensions of the ferrite body 4 are determined by the operating frequency and the desired vibration modes H 011 and H 211 .
- the dielectric spacers have the same diameter D as the ferrite body 4.
- the spacers 5 are advantageously firmly glued to the ferrite body on the flat surfaces and form a circular cylindrical body with a uniform outer surface.
- Such a cylindrical body is advantageously produced from a semifinished product which consists of a ferrite disc and two dielectric spacer discs bonded to it.
- the manufacture of the cylindrical body is then essentially limited to the machining of the lateral surface in order to achieve the required diameter D.
- the adhesive connections of the ferrite disc to the spacer discs are retained over all machining processes.
- Both the ferrite disk and the spacer disks already have exactly the thickness required for later use in the circulator before the cylinder surface is machined.
- the thickness of the ferrite body is determined by the desired vibration modes H 011 and H 211 and the operating frequency. Since the height of the waveguide branch without tapering is equal to the height of the exciting waveguide, the thickness d of the spacers is also 5 given.
- the adaptation of the circulator arrangement to the feeding waveguide takes place in that the dielectric material used for the spacer disks is selected taking into account its dielectric constant E r so that the thickness d of the disks is equal to a quarter wavelength with respect to a perpendicular to the waveguide base sides (in x Direction) is the electromagnetic wave of the operating frequency propagating in the disks.
- the wavelength of such a wave is a factor of 1 / ⁇ r from the free space wavelength.

Abstract
Description
Die Erfindung betrifft einen Millimeterwellen-Zirkulator der im Oberbegriff des Patentanspruchs 1 angegebenen Art.The invention relates to a millimeter wave circulator specified in the preamble of claim 1.
Circulators of this type are usually designed as Y circulators and are used as a non-reciprocal waveguide branch, for example for transmitter / receiver decoupling or for decoupling a synchronizing millimeter wave source from a reflection amplifier.
The bandwidths of such circulators are typically 1-2%.
The invention is based on the object of specifying a circulator of the type mentioned at the outset with a bandwidth which is substantially greater than in the prior art.
The achievement of this object is described in the characterizing part of patent claim 1. The subclaims contain advantageous refinements and developments of the invention.
The resonance frequency of a circular cylindrical ferrite body of given material in the circulator arrangement is a variable depending on the type of the excited oscillation mode and the geometric dimensions of the ferrite body. A given ferrite body thus has a large number of resonance frequencies in accordance with the different vibration modes (resonances). On the other hand, by specifying a desired resonance frequency in a specific vibration mode, the geometric dimensions of the ferrite body are defined in the frequency-determining dimensions, that is to say the diameter and / or height of the ferrite cylinder. The theoretical relationships between each determination Sizes have been described many times and are assumed to be known for the present invention.
According to the invention, the ferrite body in the circulator arrangement is excited in several and higher oscillation modes (resonances) than the basic oscillation mode by the wave oscillating with the operating frequency of the millimeter-wave arrangement and fed to the circulator. It is essential here that the resonance frequencies of the two excited vibration modes, for example, are close to one another, preferably have a frequency spacing of less than 10% of their arithmetic mean. These vibration modes then exist at the same time with a correspondingly broadband excitation and the transmission characteristics corresponding to the individual vibration modes complement one another to form a new characteristic with a substantially larger operating bandwidth. The manufacturing specifications are then advantageously set up in such a way that the center of the operating band coincides with the predetermined operating frequency with comparatively low demands on the tolerances. Due to the much higher operating range, deviations due to manufacturing tolerances can be accepted to a much greater extent.
An embodiment of the invention is to be regarded as particularly advantageous in which the ferrite body is dimensioned such that the operating frequency is in the range of the resonance frequencies of the ferrite body in the H O11 and H 211 vibration modes. Here and in the following, the resonance frequencies of the ferrite body are understood to be the resonance frequencies of a cavity resonator with metallic walls enclosing the ferrite body. In addition, with this choice of the vibration modes for the ferrite body, there is the essential advantage that the resonance frequencies in both vibration modes essentially depend only on the height of the ferrite body. The height can be defined as the distance between two plane-parallel surfaces during manufacture, e.g. B. by lapping with much greater accuracy than the diameter of a circular cylinder.
The function of the circulator is strongly influenced by the boundary conditions that apply to the resonance body at its interfaces. All-round magnetic interfaces are required in the dielectric for the particularly advantageous H 011 and H 211 vibration modes, ie both the resonance field in the ferrite body and the exciting wave field should have no surface-parallel component of the magnetic field at the interfaces of the ferrite body.
According to a preferred embodiment, the dielectric spacer washers mechanically fixing the ferrite body between the ferrite body and the waveguide bases are matched in their dielectric constant to the wafer thickness and the operating frequency by suitable choice of material in such a way that the wafer thickness of a quarter wavelength is based on a thickness in the disks perpendicular to the waveguide bases propagating wave at the operating frequency (center frequency of the operating frequency band) corresponds. As a result, the Waveguide bases given electrical short circuit transformed into an electrical open circuit at the plane-parallel interfaces of the ferrite body.
In order to ensure an undisturbed formation of both vibration modes, according to an advantageous development of the invention, the waveguide branching is expanded to form a circular cylindrical cavity resonator.

With a required blocking attenuation of at least 20 dB, a conventional circulator from the prior art, the frequency dependence of the blocking attenuation in FIG. 1 is outlined, for example an operating bandwidth of only 1-2%, for example at an operating frequency of 100 GHz. B. only 1-2 GHz bandwidth. With the dimensions of the ferrite bodies in the millimeter and sub-millimeter range, especially with regard to the diameter of the circular cylindrical bodies, compliance with corresponding tolerances during production is hardly possible with reasonable effort, so that the exact frequency setting must be carried out by subsequent selection and external matching networks.
In contrast, the construction of a circulator according to the invention results in a frequency dependence of the blocking attenuation, as shown in FIG. 2 is outlined. The two resonance frequencies f and f 2 are so close together that the blocking attenuation is better than the required 20 dB anywhere between the two attenuation maxima. With a relative operating bandwidth of approx. 8%, a circulator according to the invention is considerably less sensitive to tolerances in the manufacture and assembly of the ferrite bodies, so that adjustments are generally not required subsequently or can be carried out with little effort.
With the H 011 resonance, whose field line progression projected onto the level of the semiconductor branch in the ferrite body in FIG. 3 is sketched, the electric field has no component in the direction of the axis of the circular cylindrical ferrite body. This also applies to the H 211 resonance, whose Field line course in FIG. 4 is outlined. The magnetic field lines (dashed lines) are spatial curves that reach into the space in front of and behind the image plane.
Die beiden Permanentmagnete 6 erzeugen das erforderliche magnetische Gleichfeld.FIG. 5, FIG. 6 show in sectional images a circulator arrangement in which these oscillation modes H 011 and H 211 are excited. The excitation takes place in a manner familiar to the person skilled in the art via the waveguide connecting arm 1 with a shaft, for example of the rectangular waveguide mode H 10 . The Y waveguide branch is expanded to form a circular
Die Forderung nach einer magnetischen Grenzfläche des Ferritkörpers ist damit optimal erfüllt.FIG. 7 shows a preferred, because particularly advantageous, circulator arrangement as a sectional view in side view.
