Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to an apparatus for attaching a fastener such as a snap closure, a button, a tack, a rivet, or the like composed of male and female fastener members to a web-like material such as a fabric.
- One known apparatus for attaching fasteners of the type described to fabric materials is illustrated in Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication No. 56-85407. In the disclosed apparatus, a pair of clamps defining a pocket for holding an upper fastener member is mounted on a lower end of a punch holder case, and is urged toward each other by leaf springs. However, unless the leaf springs apply equal resilient forces to the clamps, the pocket tends to be displaced out of a centered position. When an upper fastener member is to be supplied into the pocket, therefore, it cannot be reliably and smoothly accommodated in the pocket. Furthermore, the upper fastener member in the pocket may not be properly combined with a lower fastener member on a die due to misalignment. According to another known arrangement, a pocket is defined by a pair of clamp members urged by a compression coil spring acting therebetween for gripping a fastener member in the pocket. However, the compression coil spring directly engaging the clamp members may often fail to center the fastener member as desired.
- The prior fastener attaching apparatus of the type referred to above include a punch movable by a drive mechanism such as an air cylinder toward a die for pressing fastener members together. There are known certain safety mechanisms for preventing fingers or tools from being sandwiched between the punch and the die, the examples including a safety cover between the punch and the die and a special safety device associated with the apparatus. However, such prior safety measures have resulted in an increased size of the apparatus, a small field of view in which the operator can visually supervise the operation of the apparatus, and difficulty in removing fastener members from between the punch and the die.
- The apparatus shown in Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication 56-85407 includes a parts feeder composed of a conical rotary drum having equally spaced grooves in which base portions of'fastener members are fitted. The fastener members can be supplied to a chute by rotating the rotatry drum. When dust or machined chips happen to enter grooves in the rotary drum, the fastener members fail to be supplied to the chute or are liable to hit a hopper frame for preventing rotation of the drum. The jamming fastener member has to be removed out of the groove by striking or vibrating the drum. Thus, the apparatus is required to be stopped for removal of such a jam, with the result that the efficiency of the apparatus is lowered. The jam-removing process is also quite tedious and time-consuming.
- Another problem is that the rotary drum makes the overall apparatus large in size. It is difficult to position the drum with respect to the chute. When it is found that the drum and chute are improperly positioned with respect to each other, then the chute has to be detached and then positioned again relatively to the drum.
- The present invention seeks to provide an apparatus for attaching fasteners to web-like materials, the apparatus having means for properly centering a pocket for accommodating a fastener member for smooth and reliable attachment thereof to the web-like material in combination with anohter fastener member.
- The present invention further seeks to provide an apparatus for attaching fasteners to web-like materials, the apparatus having a safety mechanism for attaching the fastener to the web-like material with increased safety and allowing the operator to keep a wide range of view in visually confirming the attachment of the fastener to the web-like material.
- The present invention further seeks to provide an apparatus for attaching fasteners to web-like materials, the apparatus having a parts feeder mechanism for reliably and smoothly feeding fastener members to a chute without an unwanted jam.
- According to the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for attaching a fastener composed of a first fastener member and a second fastener member to be combined together through a web-like material therebetween, comprising:
- (a) a lower pocket mecahnism for supporting the second fastener member thereon;
- (b) a punch mechanism movable toward said lower pocket mechanism for fixing the first fastener member to the second fastener member with the web-like material interposed therebetween;
- (c) an upper pocket mechanism for supporting the first fastener member, said upper pocket mechanism being movable toward said lower pocket mechanism and having means for centering the first fastener member in alignment with the second fastener member;
- (d) a safety mechanism operatively coupled with said upper pocket mechanism for actuating said punch mechanism only when said upper pocket mechanism reaches a predetermined position with respect to said lower pocket mechanism; and
- (e) a feeder mechanism having first and second hoppers for storing the first and second fastener members therein and first and second pickup means movable rectilinearly for feeding the first and second fastener members out of said first and second hoppers into said first and second pocket mechanisms, respectively.
- Many other advantages and features of the present invention will become manifest to those versed in the art upon making reference to the detailed description and the accompanying sheets of drawings in which preferred structural embodiments incorporating the principles of the present invention are shown by way of illustrative example.

- The principles of the present invention are particularly useful when embodied in an
apparatus 10 for attaching a button to a fabric as shown in Figure 1. The button to be attached to the fabric is generally composed of an upper female member A and a lower male member B to be fitted in and staked on the upper female member A through the fabric. Examples of such buttons include snap closures, tacks, and other fasteners comprising male and female members which can be combined together when fastened to fabrics or other web-like materials. - The
apparatus 10 generally includes anupper pocket mechanism 11 for supporting upper fastener members A one at a time, alower pocket mechanism 12 for supporting lower fastener members B one at a time, a pusher mechanism 15 (Figure 2) for pushing the members A, B to the upper andlower pocket mechanisms 11,'12 along upper andlower guides parts feeder mechanism 16 for feeding the members A, B downchutes upper pocket mechanism 11 for providing safety during operation of theapparatus 10. The above mechanisms are mounted on abase 21 and a pair of laterally spacedframes base 21. - As illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the
upper pocket mechanism 11 is composed of a pair ofpocket holders cam followers upper pocket members presser mechanism 28 for normally urging thecam followers slide ram 29 having a channel-shaped cross section. - The
pocket holders pins slide ram 29, and have upperinclined surfaces upper pocket members pocket 32 for holding the upper member A. - The
presser mechanism 28 comprises acam plate 33 having a pair of downwardtaper surfaces cam followers spring case 35 disposed above thecam plate 33 and fixed byscrews slide ram 29, and acompression coil spring 37 interposed between thecam plate 33 and thespring case 35. - The
cam plate 33 is normally urged by thecompression coil spring 37 to move downwardly away from thespring case 35 for causing thetaper surfaces cam followers pocket holders pocket holders upper pocket 32 defined by theupper pocket members cam plate 33 is in the form of a tapered plate (Figure 2) for uniformly urging thepocket holders - The
slide ram 29 has in its side walls a pair oflift pins safety mechanism 20. As illustrated in Figure 2, thepocket mechanism 11 is vertically slidable between aguide cover 39 and aspacer plate 40 which are attached to theframes - The
upper pocket mechanism 11 as it is moved upwardly is stopped by astop 41 mounted eccentrically on astop shaft 42 fixed to and between thegudie cover 39 and thespacer plate 40. Angular adjustment of theeccentric stop 41 allows the upper member A to be properly fed along theupper guide 13 by an upper pusher 62 (described later) and reliably held in theupper pocket 32 in theupper pocket members - The
lower pocket mechanism 12 includes a die 44 secured by a screw 45 to adie holder 46 for supporting the lower member B, a pair oflower pocket members pins pocket holders lower pocket members pins - The
lower pocket members jaws lower pocket 52 therebetween. Acompression coil spring 53 is interposed between inner tapered surfaces of the lower ends of thelower pocket members lower pocket members pins jaws - A
holder pin 54 extends transversely between lower portions of thepocket holders swing lever 55. - When the
pusher mechanism 15 is retracted, acam follower 56 comprising a roller is depressed to turn aroll lever 57 clockwise (Figure 2) about apin 58. At this time, theswing lever 55 is caused by apin 59 to turn counter-clockwise about apin 60 for thereby lowering thepocket holders lower pocket members lower pocket members jaws lower pocket 52 against the force of thecompression coil spring 53. - As shown in Figure 2, the
pusher mechanism 15 comprises apusher holder 61 having theupper pusher 62 and alower pusher 63 which are vertically spaced and also having aroller pin 64, thepusher holder 61 being slidable along thedie holder 46 and engagable with thecam follower 56. Thepusher mechanism 15 also includes aguide 65 along which thepusher holder 61 is slidable back and forth (leftward and rightward in Figure 2), and apusher lever 66 engaging theroller pin 64 and pivotably mounted on alever pin 71 extending between theframes pusher lever 66 is normally urged by atension spring 67 in a direction to move toward thepunch mechanism 19. - The
punch mechanism 19 is driven by anair cylinder 68, as will be described later on. When theair cylinder 68 is actuated, itspiston rod 69 is raised to turn amain lever 70 to cause apin 72 thereon to push thepusher lever 66 counterclockwise about thelever pin 71, thereby retracting thepusher mechanism 15 along theguide 65 against the force of thetension spring 67. - As illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, each of the upper and
lower guides groove 76 defined in an upper surface thereof. Thegroove 76 is deepest at an end thereof connected to thechute pocket mechanism chute groove 76 is pushed by thepusher groove 76. When the member A, B is thus pushed, it is gradually turned into a horizontal position on its way into thepocket mechanism - The
groove 76 has astop wall 77 positioned such that when the member A, B is fed from thechute guide guide chute stop wall 77 before the member A, B is pushed by thepusher - If adjacent members A or B are partially overlapped at their flanges, as shown in Figure 9, only the member A, B placed on the
guide pusher pocket mechanism - As illustrated in Figure 2, the
punch mechanism 19 comprises apunch case 80 opening downwardly and slidably disposed between thespacer plate 40 and apunch guide 78, apunch holder 81 slidably fitted in a lower open end thereof, and a rod-shapedpunch 82 having an upper end fixedly mounted in thepunch case 80 and alower end 83 inserted in thepunch holder 81. Thepunch holder 81 has a downwardly openingrecess 84. Acompression coil spring 85 is interposed between thepunch case 80 and thepunch holder 81 for normally urging thepunch holder 82 downwardly. - The
punch case 80 has on an upper end thereof abifurcated flange 86. A pir oftoggle links frames punch case 80. More specifically, thetoggle link 87 is pivotably connected by apin 89 to thebifurcated flange 86 of thepunch case 80, and thetoggle link 88 is pivotably connected by apin 90 to theframes pin 91 mounted on an end of alink 92 which is pivotably connected by apin 93 on the other end to themain lever 70. Therefore, when thepiston rod 69 of theair cylinder 68 is lifted, the toggle -links punch case 80. - As shown in Figure 4, the
safety mechanism 20 includes afirst safety lever 95 connected at one end to alever shaft 96 pivotably mounted on theframes sensor bracket 97, and thesecond safey lever 99 fixed at one end to thelever shaft 96 and having a bifurcated configuration with the other end engaging thepins 38 on theslide ram 29. Thesafety mechanism 20 also has anair cylinder 101 having apiston rod 100 attached to thesensor bracket 97, and asensor switch 102 comprising a limit switch, for example, disposed above thesensor bracket 97 and actuatable in response to engagement therewith. - The
air cylinder 101 is normally actuated to urge thepiston rod 100 thereof to move downwardly to cause the first and second safety levers 99, 95 to keep theupper pocket mechanism 11 in an upper position as shown in Figure 2 under normal or inoperative condition. - When a switch (not shown) is turned on after the members A, B have been positioned with respect to the fabric F, the
air cylinder 101 is inactivated to release thepiston rod 100. Then, theupper pocket mechanism 11 falls due to gravity (Figure 5). As theupper pocket mechanism 11 is moved downwardly, thesecond safety lever 99 is turned clockwise (Figure 5) to turn thelever shaft 96, whereupon thefirst safety lever 95 is turned clockwise in Figure 4 to bring thesensor bracket 97 into engagement with thesensor switch 102. Thesensor switch 102 now generates a signal to drive thepunch mechanism 19. Theair cylinder 68 is actuated to project thepiston rod 69 for thereby lowering thepunch mechanism 19 as shown in Figure 6. - In operation, the members A, B to be fastened on the fabric F are fed down the
chutes parts feeder mechanism 16 and delivered by thepusher mechanism 15 into the upper andlower pockets upper pocket members tension spring 67 of thepusher mechanism 15 is required to be larger than the resilient force of thecompression coil spring 37 of thepresser mechanism 28. Therefore, thepocket holders pins upper pocket 32, and thecam followers cam plate 33 upwardly against the downward force of thecompression coil spring 37. - When the upper member A is completely accommodated in the
upper pocket 32, it is firmly gripped by thepocket members compression coil spring 37. - Then, the fabric F is positioned with respect to the fastener members A, B, and the switch is turned on to inactivate the
air cylinder 101 for releasing thesafety mecahnism 20, whereupon theair cylinder 68 is actuated as described above to lower thepunch mechanism 19. The lower end of thepunch holder 82 is lowered into theupper pocket 32 to spread theupper pocket members lower end 83 of thepunch 82 is moved downwardly to press the upper member A against the lower member B on the die 44 with the fabric F therebetween until the members A, B are coupled together by staking. - The
presser mechanism 28 acting on theupper pocket mechanism 11 is effective in centering theupper pocket 32 in alignment with thelower pocket 52 for attaching the fastener members A, B accurately and smoothly to the fabric F. Thecam plate 33 and thespring case 35 of thepresser mechanism 28 are in the form of plates which make thepresser mechanism 28 thin and compact in size, with the result that the overall apparatus is rendered compact in size. - Should there be any foreign matter such as a finger present between the upper and
lower pocket mechanisms upper pocket mechanism 11 is prevented thereby from going down, and thesensor bracket 97 does not engage thesensor switch 102. Therefore, no signal is generated by thesensor switch 102 and thepunch mechanism 19 is not lowered. The foreign matter placed between the upper andlower pocket mecahnisms upper pocket mechanism 11, and will not be damaged severely. Since theupper pocket mechanism 11 is operatively coupled with thesafety mechanism 20 to serve as a sensor probe, no special sensor probe is required to be provided, an arrangement which allows the operator to easily confirm the position in which to attach the fastener members A, B to the fabric F. - The
parts feeder mechanism 16 will be described in detail with reference to Figures 4, 10 through 18. - As shown in Figures 4 and 11, the
parts feeder mechanism 16 is composed fo afirst hopper 105 for containing a multiplicity of the upper fastener members A, asecond hopper 106 for containing a multiplicity of the lower fastener members B, a pair of first andsecond pickup blades second hoppers chutes second slides second pickup blades driver mechanism 111 for vertically moving the first andsecond pickup blades - Figure 12 shows the
first hopper 105 and thefirst pickup blade 107 in greater detail. Thesecond hopper 106 and thesecond pickup blade 108 will not be described in detail as they are the mirror images of thefirst hopper 105 and thefirst pickup blade 107. Thefirst hopper 105 is in the form of abox 104 composed of a pair of spacedside panels rear covers side panels hinges 117 to the upper end of thebox 104. Aparts tray 118 is disposed in a lower portion of thebox 104 as a bottom of thehopper 105 and has spacedlegs upper plate 121. Theleg 120 is higher than theleg 119, and they are progressively lower toward thefront cover 114, so that theupper plate 121 is inclined downwardly toward alowest corner 122. Theparts tray 118 has ahighest corner 123 located in diagonally opposite relation to thelowest corner 122. Therefore, the fastener members A contained in thehopper 105 tend to move toward thelowest corner 122 due to gravity. Theleg 119 is spaced from theside panel 112 to define agap 124 in which thepickup plate 107 is vertically movable. - The
front cover 114 is composed of anupper cover member 125 and alower cover member 126 spaced therefrom to define anopening 127 therebetween. Thelower cover member 126 has an upper edge extending along the inclined surface of theupper plate 121 of theparts tray 118. As shown in Figures 10 and 12, atransparent panel 129 having aknob 130 is vertically slidably disposed against an outer surface of thefront cover 114 and retained by a pair ofrails transparent panel 129 as it is in a lowest position covers theopening 127 and allows the operator to visually check the rate at which the fastener members A are fed out of thehopper 105. When thetransparent panel 129 is pulled upwardly to uncover theopening 127, the fastener members A can be removed from thehopper 105 or new fastener members A can be stored into thehopper 105. - As shown in Figure 14, the
rear cover 115 has ahole 131 defined therein for delivering therethrough the fastener members A picked up by thepickup blade 107, and thechute 17 also has ahole 132 registered with thehole 131. - As illustrated in Figure 12, the
pickup blade 107 has an upper edge inclined downwardly toward thechute 17 and having arecess 133 and an integrallower tongue 134 having oblong holes orslots 135 defined therein. As shown in Figure 15, each fastener member A has a central base portion Al and a flange A2 extending radially outwardly from the central base portion Al. Therecess 133 opens toward theside panel 112 to define achannel 136 in which the flanges of the fastener members A are loosely fitted. Thelower tongue 134 of thepickup blade 107 is vertically adjustably fastened to theslide 109 byscrews 141 extending through theslots 135. - As shown in Figures 16 and 17, the
slide 109 has a channel-shapedslide guide 137 fixed byscrews 142 to theframe 22, and aslide block 139 vertically slidably disposed in aguide channel 138 in theslide guide 137. Theslide block 139 has acentral pin 140 andinclined surfaces pin 140. Thetongue 134 of thepickup blade 107 is fastened to a front surface of theslide block 139. Theslide guide 137 has anopening 144 in its side wall. - As shown in Figure 11, the
driver mecahnism 111 has a pair of first and second lift levers 146, 146 pivotably mounted bypins frame 22 and having ends engaging thepins pin 149 to a joint 150 connected to apiston rod 151 of anair cylinder 152. The lift levers 146, 146 extend through theopenings 144, respectively, in the slide guides 137, 137. - Operation of the
parts feeder mechanism 16 is as follows: - When the
air cylinder 152 is actuated to lift thepiston rod 151, the first and second lift levers 146, 146 are turned about thepins guide channels second pickup blades lowest corners parts tray pickup blades channels chutes side panel 112 and a fastener member fitted in thechannel 136 as shown in Figure 15 will drop onto theparts tray 118 when the fastener member in thechannel 136 rollingly moves. - When the
piston rod 151 is lowered, thepickup blades holes 131, 132 (Figure 14) into thechutes - Since the fastener members A, B are fed into the
chutes pickup blades hoppers chutes hoppers parts feeder mechanism 16 is relatively simple in costruction, free from failures, and makes the apparatus more compact than would be if circular rotary drums were used for parts storage.
