Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for producing a cardboard presentation box of high mechanical strength for packaging relatively heavy objects, such as glass bottles filled with a liquid.
- French Patent 2,209,693 describes a method of reinforcing a package by impregnating the narrow zones extending along the fold lines and not being crossed by fold lines using a thermosetting resin that then hardened, as well as a package obtained by this process.
- microcannelated cartons have been developed which, for a small thickness, have higher mechanical strength than a single carton of the same thickness. These cartons can be offset printed and grooved by conventional techniques. But they most often present unacceptable surface deformations when looking for a quality presentation of the box.
- the object of the present invention is to design a method for producing a presentation box with very high mechanical strength and high rigidity from thin cardboards which can be offset printed and grooved using standard mechanical or HF techniques. allowing work at high speeds.
- the method according to the present invention consists in selectively reinforcing the parts of the blank which are not crossed by a groove, so as to provide on each side of the different grooves unreinforced parts allowing subsequent shaping of the box, which reinforcement consisting of impregnating the entire surface of the cardboard blank with a curable polymerizable resin and subjecting only the parts to be reinforced to a treatment by high frequency producing localized polymerization.
- a reinforcement is used by adding an auxiliary material combined with the impregnation.
- the sealing of the auxiliary material and the polymerization of the impregnation resin are carried out by a single HF treatment.
- the impregnation resin is preferably a thermosetting resin such as an acrylic resin, of urephormol, of melamine phormol, a phenolic resin or also combinations of such resins.
- FIG 1 we see a cardboard blank 1 cut and pre-grooved in a conventional manner to form a parallelepipedic presentation box.
- This cut 1 has sides 2 to 5 intended to form the side, rear and front walls of the box.
- the flanks are separated by grooves 6 to 8.
- these flanks carry at their upper and lower ends tongues 9 to 15 intended to form the bottom and the cover of the box.
- These tabs are separated from said flanks 2 to 5 by grooves 16 to 22.
- the tab 10 and the flank 5 further comprise a sealing tab 23 and 24 respectively.
- Cutout 1 is made from cardboard with a grammage of less than 500 g. to allow conventional cutting and creasing by mechanical means working at high speed.
- the cardboard can thus be printed using a fast and economical offset process.
- the entire surface of the cardboard blank is impregnated with a thermosetting resin. Then we only submit the parts to strengthen to the HF treatment thus producing a polymerization and a localized hardening of the resin while the folding beads of the cutout are not affected by this treatment and thus allow shaping by mechanical means of the box.
- thermosetting resins such as acrylic, urephormol, melamine phormol resins, phenolic resin or combinations of such resins are used for this impregnation.
- the catalysts used with these resins determine the final stiffness of the treated parts of the cardboard blank.
- an HF tool is used as shown in FIG. 3.
- the marble 36 has on its underside for each part to be reinforced 25 to 29 (FIG. 1) a separate HF tool 37 to 40 consisting of a rectangular frame with a profile.
- Each frame includes a series of longitudinal and transverse cross members 42 and 43 respectively.
- Practice has shown that such a tool allows polymerization and hardening of the impregnation resin in the parts to be reinforced 25 to 29 to be sufficient to considerably improve the rigidity of the cardboard blank 1.
- the selective reinforcement is combined by providing cuts in auxiliary material with the reinforcement by localized impregnation and hardening.
- the cardboard blank 1 is first impregnated with a suitable resin.
- the auxiliary material cuts are put in place and in another phase, an HF treatment is applied which produces the sealing of the cuts and the localized hardening of the resin. This operation can, if necessary, be carried out in a single phase and with a single suitable HF tool.
- This tool can be of the type shown in FIG. 3. It then ensures, with a suitable adjustment of the HF press, simultaneously the sealing of the auxiliary material cuts and the polymerization as well as the hardening of the impregnation resin in the parts to be reinforce 25 to 29. It is of course also possible to seal the cutouts of auxiliary material and the polymerization of the impregnation resin in two successive phases and with two different tools as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 respectively.
