Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing medals, in which a base body, which is provided at least on the head side with a relief-like representation, is first produced, which is subsequently given a glossy coating.
Medals such as used as prizes in sports competitions or other competitions, usually have a base made of metal or plastic, which has a relief-like representation at least on its front or head side and is provided with a shiny metallic coating, which is to give the medals a valuable, elegant appearance . So far, either high-gloss or matt-gloss coatings have been applied. These coatings can be produced galvanically or by vapor deposition, and in the case of matt-gloss coatings also by spraying.
The galvanic application is carried out for high-gloss coatings using high-gloss baths and for matt-gloss coatings either using chemically prepared matt gloss baths or using high-gloss baths with subsequent mechanical matting, e.g. made by brushing. Gold or brass baths are used to produce the color golg and silver silver baths are used to produce the color.
When vapor deposition, an aluminum layer is applied to the surface of the base body, which is sealed with a transparent varnish. This transparent varnish is a glossy varnish for high-gloss coatings, but a matt varnish for matt-gloss coatings. To produce the color gold, this lacquer can either already contain the color or subsequently provided with it by spraying or dipping, the color penetrating into the top layer of lacquer; to produce the color silver, only an example containing no color is used. lacquer on its surface is used.
In the production of a matt-gloss coating by spraying, which is also mentioned above, a matt lacquer is used which contains metal particles in the finest distribution.
However, these known coatings have disadvantages. For medals with high-gloss coatings due to reflection or glare, the contours of the relief-like representation are often difficult to see or not at all. This disadvantage does not occur with medals with matt-gloss covers, but they do not convey the impression of the precious metal - like the high-gloss medals - but look cheap. The production of a cover in which high-gloss and matt-gloss areas - e.g. to emphasize the motif shown - alternating or combined with one another is not possible with the methods described above.
From DE-PS 28 33 066 a material for transferring a gloss pattern is known, which consists of a carrier, a separating surface and two layers of different gloss values, the first layer of the one gloss value adjacent to the carrier extending over the entire surface of the carrier , while the second layer of the other gloss value is applied in the form of a pattern on the first layer. In addition to the fact that gloss patterns can only be transferred to essentially flat objects, but not to medals, some of which have protruding areas, it is with Sem known material disadvantageous that a special pattern is produced for each representation and the object to be decorated must be supplied absolutely accurate during the transfer process. The situation is similar with the decoration method known from DE-AS 29 17 417.
The invention has for its object to provide a method for producing medals which have a combined matt-gloss coating at least on their top side, which can be seen clearly there, have an elegant appearance and are easy to manufacture in terms of process technology. Starting from the known method described at the outset, this object is achieved according to the invention in that after the production of the full-area coating set to a first gloss value, a second coating which only detects the raised areas of the medal and is set to a different gloss value is applied.
According to the invention, several options are provided for producing this second partial surface coating of the other gloss value. Thus, in a first embodiment of the invention, this production is carried out by stamping a hot stamping foil by means of a stamp with an elastic stamp head, the elasticity of the stamp head and the stamping pressure being matched to one another in such a way that the recessed areas of the relief-like representation are not covered by the stamping process, and in one second embodiment of the invention with the aid of a printing process, in particular the tampa printing process, the elasticity of the stamp head and the printing depth being matched to one another such that the recessed areas of the relief-like representation are not covered by the printing process.
In a further embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the second coating is initially designed as a layer covering the entire surface of the first coating, which is then removed in the raised areas.
With the method according to the invention, sharp-contoured, noble-looking medals can be produced in the simplest possible process. The procedure is completely independent of the location of the medals and, above all, of the respective presentation provided thereon; If you consider that manufacturers of such medals have several hundred different types (depictions of all sports, club and other emblems, jubilee cases, breeding animals and plant species, etc.) in the program, this represents a very significant simplification.
