Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a cigarette whose envelope has, in the vicinity of its suction end at least one opening calibrated to allow an air inlet intended to reduce the concentration of inhaled substances and associated with a valve element of which the degree of opening depends on a characteristic parameter of the smoke.
  • Cigarettes with a ventilation opening are well known and there are many solutions to allow air to enter downstream from the part of the cigarette intended to be smoked.
  • the purpose of this air intake is to make the smoke from cigarettes lighter.
  • ventilating the cigarette by adding air to the smoke reduces the concentration of nicotine both at the beginning or at the end of this cigarette, the additional air flow being constant.
  • the taste of the cigarette changes and the cigarette may be too light at first if it is ventilated so that the end of this cigarette is not too strong.
  • the object of the present invention is to make a cigarette provided with automatic regulation means which make it possible to gradually add more air to the smoke as the combustion of the cigarette progresses and the concentration of nicotine increases.
  • automatic regulation means which make it possible to gradually add more air to the smoke as the combustion of the cigarette progresses and the concentration of nicotine increases.
  • the present invention relates to a cigarette according to claim 1.
  • Fig. 1 is a diagram which represents, in a system of coordinates x, y, the variation of the concentration of nicotine in the smoke expressed in mg on the ordinate as a function of the number of puffs of smoke corresponding to a cigarette on the abscissa.
  • the nicotine concentration is four times higher at the end of the cigarette than at the beginning.
  • the diagram in fig. 2 represents the variation in the amount of water on the ordinate expressed in ⁇ l / cm 3 as a function of the number of puffs of smoke corresponding to a cigarette on the abscissa. We find that the amount of water is about 10 times higher at the end of the cigarette than at the beginning.
  • the bimetallic element is not sensitive to heat but to humidity and is produced, for this purpose, from a sheet of which one of the faces is hydrophilic and of which the other is hydrophobic.
  • This sheet can be produced either by assembling two elements, for example a sheet of paper glued to a self-adhesive plastic, or using a sheet of paper one side of which is coated with a hydrophobic substance.
  • Fig. 3 illustrates a possible embodiment of a cigarette filter 1 associated with a valve with automatic adjustment of air inlet as a function of the humidity resulting from the combustion of the cigarette.
  • This cigarette filter 1 has a longitudinal recess 2 whose cross section corresponds substantially to that of a truncated circle sector, the face 3 truncating this circle sector being porous while the other faces are impermeable, including the face adjacent to the outlet of the filter 1.
  • the porous face 3 is covered with a bimetallic element 4 of the type described above with its hydrophilic face facing the inside of the filter 1 so as to come into contact with the smoke passing through the filter.
  • the end of the bimetal element 4 adjacent to the part of the cigarette 5 containing the tobacco, is fixed to the porous face 3 while its other end is free.
  • the filter 1 is surrounded by a sealed envelope 6 in which openings 7 are made to bring the longitudinal recess into contact with the atmosphere.
  • FIG. 4 shows a filter 8 having clearances 9 delimited between a cylindrical envelope 10 and the filter 8.
  • This envelope has openings 11 made with respect to each clearance 9.
  • a bimetallic element 12 is disposed in front of each series of openings 11 with its hydrophilic side facing inward. This bimetallic element 12 is fixed to the cylindrical envelope 10 by its end adjacent to the part of the cigarette 13 which contains the tobacco.
  • the bimetallic element 12 takes the position drawn in the lower part of FIG. 4 and gradually releases the openings 11 and thus gradually lets in more air with the smoke sucked through the filter 8.
  • Fig. 5 illustrates an embodiment also based on a valve sensitive to the humidity contained in the smoke but the bimetallic strip 14 working in the opposite direction to those of the previous figures, that is to say that the hydrophilic face is facing outward.
  • a plurality of holes 15 5 are provided in the hydrophobic part of the bimetallic strip, as illustrated in FIG. 6.
  • the variant illustrated in FIG. 7 relates to a cigarette comprising between the filter 19 and the tobacco 20 a housing 21 delimited externally by a cylindrical envelope 22 pierced with a series of openings 23.
  • a bimetallic element 24 is applied against at least part of the internal face of the cylindrical envelope 22 of this housing 21 and is fixed to this envelope by one of its ends, the other being free.
  • the hydrophilic face of the bimetallic strip 24 is turned against the internal face of the cylindrical envelope 22 so that the internal part of this bimetallic strip is provided with perforations 25 to allow the hydrophilic external part of the bimetallic strip to come into contact with moisture contained in smoke.
  • the bimetallic element 24 progressively moves away from the internal face of the cylindrical envelope 22 and releases the openings 23.
  • the regulating mechanism according to the present invention is extremely simple so that it is perfectly suited both technically and economically to the use for which it is intended. Indeed, the materials used are of negligible cost and the modifications necessary to the cigarette or to the filter are perfectly compatible with the manufacture of these articles.
  • embodiments of the invention have been shown used with a filter, it is obvious that the same solutions would be applicable to cigarettes without a filter.
  • the improvement brought by this solution to the regulation of the nicotine concentration also contributes to the efforts which tend to produce cigarettes whose taste is substantially constant from the beginning to the end of the cigarette, this as well in the case of strong cigarettes as light.
  • cigarettes have been shown in which all the ventilation holes are initially closed, it is also possible to provide additional ventilation openings which make it possible to add air to the smoke from the start.
