Description

  • The invention relates to a hinge device for tiltable windows of the kind disclosed in FR-A-1466264 or FR-A-1463388 and defined in the first part of claim 1.
  • From DK-C-114,321 it is moreover known to make use of a similar type of hinges in tiltable windows, thereby profiting from the advantage that the hinge when appropriately mounted is able to determine a (shifting) tilting axis spaced apart from the window plane either interiorly in relation thereto, viz. in windows for vertical installation, or exteriorly in case of inclined skylights or overhead windows. Only the first one of said two possibilities is mentioned in the specification referred to.
  • The specification referred to emphasizes that the displaceably arranged end of either of the angular levers is provided with a brake so as to retain the window sash in any position between the closing position and the-so-called cleaning position, in which the sash has been turned 180°. The brake concerned includes a brake disc which by an adjustable spring pressure is pressed against the baseplate, thereby providing the desired friction between the baseplate and the end portion of the lever so as to impede its displacement as well as its rotation in relation to the baseplate. This entails that a sufficient braking is always obtainable in any position of the sash, even though the braking depends on varying frictional resistance against displacement and rotation, respectively, during opening and closing.
  • It further applies to the embodiment of the hinge device illustrated in said specification that the two pivot pins (i.e. the non-displaceable pins each connecting the end of a lever arm and the associated baseplate) are coaxial in the closing position.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a tiltable window hinge device of the kind specified. above but including such modifications in comparison with the prior art design as to better satisfy the requirements made on inclined- tiltable overhead windows with external cover rails adapted to cover, in the closing position, the joints between the side members of the sash and the main frame and to overlap in the area of the hinge device. In such windows it is preferred that the sash can be left in any open position till an optimal position of ventilation (in which the inclination is still sufficient to cause rainwater to run down the pane and drip off from its lower edge) and that the resistance against further movement is reduced so that the sash may subsequently be swung into its cleaning position in which it is almost vertical. Furthermore, the hinge devices should be designed and mounted so as to allow the tilting or rotation to be effected with a suitably slight vertical displacement or shifting of the centre of gravity of the sash since, otherwise, considerable forces of inertia may arise if the sash is released while between its position of ventilation and its position of cleaning.
  • These objects are attained, according to the invention, by the features defined in the characterizing part of claim 1.
  • Said frictionless journalling implies that only the displacement of said second arm in relation to the associated baseplate, but not its rotation, causes frictional resistance against the movement of the sash. By the explained relative location of said pivot pins it is provided that the movement of said second arm in relation to the associated baseplate is mainly a displacement (subjected to friction) when the sash is tilted between its closed position and its optimal position of ventilation, whereas it is mainly a rotation (frictionless) between this position and the position of cleaning. It has moreover been realized that said location of the two pivot pins results in a minimum bearing load on the hinge pin between said two angular levers to the benefit of the lifetime of the hinge.
  • The substantially frictionless journalling of said second arm may be achieved in a simple manner in that said arm by an eye encircles a disc disposed on the displaceable pin and urging a brake lining against the baseplate.
  • An embodiment of the hinge according to the invention is illustrated on the drawings in which:-
    • Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the hinge in the closed position of the window,
    • Fig. 2 is a section along line II-II in Fig. 1, and
    • Fig. 3 is an elevational view corresponding to Fig. 1 of the hinge in the optimal position of ventilation of the window.
  • Of the window proper are- only shown the above mentioned cover rails 1 and 2 supposed to be mounted in an ordinary way on the side members (not shown) of the sash and the main frame, respectively, of the window.
  • The hinge may be symmetrical about a plane perpendicular to the roof surface, Fig. 1, and may consist of individual members that are cheap as regards manufacturing as well as assembling.
  • The essential hinge members are two baseplates 3 and 4 supposed to be secured to the sash side member and to the main frame side member, respectively, and two flat angular levers 5 and 6 inserted between the baseplates and presenting an angle of about 45° between their two arms. These levers are connected with each other through a hinge pin 7 in the area of their vertex.
  • A first arm 5' of the lever 5 is connected through a pivot pin 8 with the baseplate 4 of the main frame while its second arm 5" is journalled on a pin, not visible, which is displaceable in a slot 9 in the baseplate 3 of the sash and, likewise, a first arm 6' of the lever 6 is connected through a pivot pin 10 with the sash baseplate 3, while the other arm 6" of the same lever is journalled on a pin 11, Fig. 2, arranged to slide in a slot 12 in the baseplate 4 of the main frame. In the closing position, Fig. 1, the two pivot pins 8 and 10 are disposed on either side of the above mentioned plane of symmetry and spaced apart so that their axes become coincident in the position in Fig. 3.
  • As best seen in Fig. 2, the second arm 6" of the lever 6 is provided with an eye 13 which in a substantially frictionless way encircles a disc 14 mounted on the pin 11 and pressed by a disc spring 15 against a brake lining 16, which is thereby urged against the baseplate 4. This provides for ensuring the desired frictional resistance against the displacement of the pin 11 in the slot 12 when the window is tilted between the positions in Figs. 1 and 3, while a further rotation or tilting of the sash beyond the latter position may be effected without considerable pin displacement and so without considerable brake resistance.
  • The angular lever 5 may have a similar brake mechanism, but the brake function may -be- provided solely at one of said two displaceable pins.
