- ID card identification card
- bank card bank card
- authorization card that contains an insert with a passport picture
- the insert can be made from a piece of special photo paper, on the layers of which the cardholder's data and the passport photo are exposed and developed.
- the insert can then be provided with additional identification features, e.g. with line or raster prints and is finally sealed between foils.
- the invention has for its object to develop an information carrier that offers a high degree of security against counterfeiting and whose edge stability is improved so that the machine readability of the data in the various card readers is guaranteed even with strong mechanical stress on the edges.
- the object is achieved according to the invention for an information carrier of the type mentioned in the introduction in that a metal insert is provided at least in the region of the edges of the information carrier.
- the metal insert protects the edges of the information carrier from wear in a surprisingly simple manner, since the metal of the metal insert provides mechanical resistance to much greater resistance than the previously used plastic edges of the information carriers.
- the metal edge ensures that the information carrier is securely positioned in the reader and thus that the data can be read without interference using the card reader.
- the ID is more stable thanks to the metal insert and, as shown below, is also more secure against counterfeiting.
- the metal insert is a metal mask arranged along the edges of the information carrier.
- the metal mask or insert can be made from any metal.
- a sheet steel mask shows good results in terms of mechanical strength, which also has price advantages.
- the thickness of the mask will generally be comparable to that of the insert. However, it can also be significantly lower in certain application forms. If the counterfeiting of the information carrier is to be made more difficult, rare metals or metal alloys can also be used as a metal mask.
- the metal mask can also be used as a further security feature if it has certain magnetic or electrical properties, for example a certain one Coercive force, a certain capacity or a certain resistance.

Description
The invention relates to a tamper-proof information carrier, e.g. an identification card (ID card), a bank card or an authorization card that contains an insert with a passport picture, the owner's data and various security features in an inseparable connection between two plastic films.
It is known to provide documents such as ID card inserts with passport photos, signatures, fingerprints and then to weld the documents between foils.
To prevent the exchange of inserted passport photos, the insert can be made from a piece of special photo paper, on the layers of which the cardholder's data and the passport photo are exposed and developed. The insert can then be provided with additional identification features, e.g. with line or raster prints and is finally sealed between foils.
From DE-A 2 631 246 it is known to provide documents such as identity cards, authorization cards and the like with permanent magnets, magnetic sheets, magnetic tapes or metal sheets. These devices can be used to open a magnetic lock or to operate a switch. US Pat. No. 4,066,873 describes the insertion of magnetic strips which contain encoded magnetic information into such documents, a printed binary code for optical interrogation being provided at the same time.
This and a large number of similar known types of information carriers have the disadvantage that their outer edges are insufficiently protected so that they are easily damaged by mechanical stresses (e.g. when used to scrape ice off car windows). This can lead to the information carrier being unusable, in particular if the information is intended to be read by machine and the distance of the information from the edge of the card has been changed by stressing the edges.
The invention has for its object to develop an information carrier that offers a high degree of security against counterfeiting and whose edge stability is improved so that the machine readability of the data in the various card readers is guaranteed even with strong mechanical stress on the edges.
The object is achieved according to the invention for an information carrier of the type mentioned in the introduction in that a metal insert is provided at least in the region of the edges of the information carrier.
The metal insert protects the edges of the information carrier from wear in a surprisingly simple manner, since the metal of the metal insert provides mechanical resistance to much greater resistance than the previously used plastic edges of the information carriers. The metal edge ensures that the information carrier is securely positioned in the reader and thus that the data can be read without interference using the card reader. In addition, the ID is more stable thanks to the metal insert and, as shown below, is also more secure against counterfeiting.
In a preferred embodiment, the metal insert is a metal mask arranged along the edges of the information carrier. The metal mask or insert can be made from any metal. A sheet steel mask shows good results in terms of mechanical strength, which also has price advantages. The thickness of the mask will generally be comparable to that of the insert. However, it can also be significantly lower in certain application forms. If the counterfeiting of the information carrier is to be made more difficult, rare metals or metal alloys can also be used as a metal mask. The metal mask can also be used as a further security feature if it has certain magnetic or electrical properties, for example a certain one Coercive force, a certain capacity or a certain resistance.
In an advantageous further development, the metal mask is designed to be flush with the edges of the information carrier on the outside and is jagged or irregularly shaped on the inside edges, which makes opening the welded or glued information carrier for counterfeiting purposes considerably more difficult.
Another further development of the metal insert or mask is characterized in that the metal insert is provided with holes through which the upper plastic film is connected to the lower plastic film by gluing or welding. The bond between the insert, the metal insert or mask and the two protective foils is thereby improved and an attempt at forgery is made even more difficult.
- Fig. 4 ein Querschnitt mit einer eingepreßten Metallmaske.

Fig. 2 zeigt einen Querschnitt durch den Informationsträger nach Fig. 1, wobei die Materialdicken vergrößert dargestellt sind.FIG. 2 shows a cross section through the information carrier according to FIG. 1, the material thicknesses being shown enlarged.
The insert 1 is between
F ig. 3 shows an advantageous development of the information carrier according to FIG. 2, in which the metal mask takes on the task of increasing security against counterfeiting in addition to strengthening the edges. As shown, the metal mask has a smooth edge along the outer edges to protect against mechanical abrasion. The edges of the metal mask lying towards the insert are provided with
A further advantageous improvement of the information carrier is obtained in that the metal insert or mask is provided with bores or holes 4 (FIG. 3). When the
In addition to these shape-related security features, the properties of the metal mask 2 can be used to check the authenticity of information carriers. The metal mask 2 can be magnetic, have a certain electrical resistance, take up a certain electrical charge or can consist of a certain difficult to reproduce alloy. The
