Abstract

A device is provided comprising a simple means for holding the contacts apart and insulated from each other after circuit breaking. A screen formed by an insulating plate of small thickness, is placed between two mobile contact levers and is urged by springs against flanges which are integral with the levers and which move apart when short circuit currents appear for allowing this screen to be rapidly projected between the contact inserts. This simple circuit-breaker device may be used such as it is or in association with a contactor for protecting lines which supply consumer apparatus.

Description

The invention relates to a limiting switch device comprising, on the one hand, two movable contacts each placed at the end of a contact carrier lever which oscillates around a pivot and which is subjected to the action of a return spring, the respective arms of these two levers being placed in the same plane of rotation and being arranged substantially parallel one opposite the other when the device is closed, so that repulsion forces appear when these arms are traversed by very high currents, separate these two levers in the opposite direction and comprising, on the other hand, mechanical means capable of maintaining the contacts separated from each other after the appearance of these currents.

Such limiting switch devices are advantageously used in association with circuit breakers to ensure the protection of the lines which supply current-consuming devices, in particular when short-circuits appear.

In known circuit breaker devices, the general constitution of which corresponds to that defined above, the mechanical means which have the aim of keeping the contacts separated from each other, only become active if a relatively large stroke is made by at least one of the levers.

It is therefore to be feared that the appearance of intense currents, which however do not develop repulsive forces capable of causing a minimum stroke, will be followed by a new closure of the contacts, and that the mechanical resistance opposed by these attachment devices do not delay the opening.

Such phenomena are particularly dangerous when these circuit breakers are placed in series with contactors whose reaction times to an automatic opening command are significantly longer than those to which the circuit breakers respond.

Furthermore, known circuit breakers generally have a relatively complicated structure which is partly due to the complexity of the fastening members used to automatically keep the circuit breaker open, and partly due to that of manual resetting devices.

The invention therefore proposes to. providing a current limiting device whose general structure corresponds to a known arrangement which has given complete satisfaction, but in which particular measures will be taken to overcome the drawbacks of the known art, mentioned above; the invention aims in particular to provide a limiter device in which the two contacts will be kept apart and will be galvanically isolated from each other as soon as a very small spacing appears between them, thus allowing it to be placed in series with a device contactor.

According to the invention, this result is achieved thanks to the fact that a thin insulating screen placed between the arms of the contact-carrying levers and capable of moving in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of rotation common to these levers is, of a on the other hand, subjected to the action of at least one elastic member which tends to project it between the two contact pads and that, on the other hand, this screen is held in a position army, where this elastic member is comprised of at least one abutment surface belonging to at least one of the contact levers.

Already known, for example, from US Pat. No. 3,168,627, switching devices using two movable contacts each placed at the end of a deformable support and an insulating screen which moves between them.

In this known device, the movements of the screen are caused by a coil and by a compression spring so as to function as a remote-controlled switch, while due to the connections established between this screen and these contact supports, an operation in switch-limiter is totally excluded.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description below.

A limiting device presented, for example, in the form of a unipolar box 1 in FIG. 1 and constituted, for example, by the association of two half-boxes 3, 4 symmetrical with respect to the plane of the figure, comprises mainly a first interior volume 5 placed in a lower region 6 of the housing and a second interior volume 7 placed in an upper region 8 of the housing. The lower region of the housing has an outer base surface preferably used for fixing the device 15 and two opposite lateral extensions 9, 10 which each receive a conductor 11 respectively 12 for the electrical connection of the device, which can be carried out, either by means of a connection pad 13 of this conductor represented on the right of the figure, or by means of connection devices making use of a screw 14 and a socket 14 'extending beyond the base . The second lower volume 5 receives two contact levers 16 and 17 each having a first end 18 respectively 19, pivoted around a pivot 20 respectively 21. These two pivots have axes parallel and perpendicular to a median plane PP 'in which can swing the levers and are placed near the base 15.

Ce plan PP' représente avantageusement le plan de joint des deux demi-boîtiers 3, 4, voir figure 2.This plane PP 'advantageously represents the joint plane of the two half-housings 3, 4, see FIG. 2.

Each first end 18, 19 of the lever is connected to a connection conductor by a metal braid, or equivalent deformable conductor 22 respectively 23, of which a first portion 24 respectively 25, circulates substantially parallel to the base.

The first ends 18, 19 are placed in the vicinity of the pivots so that the movements of the contact levers cause only a slight deformation of the second portions 26, 27 of these metal braids, which are themselves substantially perpendicular to the base 15 , and are connected to parts 11, 13.

Ces bras sont disposés sensiblement parallèlement entre eux et en regard l'un de l'autre, perpendiculairement à la base 15.Contact pads 28, 29 are placed at the second ends 30 respectively 31 of the arms of the levers which are opposite to those receiving the braids. These arms are arranged substantially parallel to each other and facing each other, perpendicular to the base 15.

The edges 34, 35 of these ends which are opposite to the contact pads, each have a boss 36 respectively 37.

Two contact pressure springs 38 respectively 39 extending substantially around a common axis XX ', parallel to the base 15 and placed in the median plane, bear, on the one hand, on a boss and, on the other hand, on a side wall 40 respectively 41 of the housing; These two walls are substantially parallel to the arms of the levers and are substantially parallel to a plane RR 'of the housing which is perpendicular to the base and which symmetrically separates the two pivots and the two levers.

Le ressort 39 s'appuie éventuellement sur la paroi voisine 41. grâce à une pièce de réglage 42.The spring 39 is optionally supported on the adjoining wall 41. by virtue of an adjustment piece 42.

These two springs therefore apply opposite pressure forces on the levers which hold the pellets against each other, and in such a way that the two levers assume positions that are substantially symmetrical with respect to a plane RR 'passing between the pivots perpendicularly PP 'plan.

An arc chamber 43, placed in the second interior volume 7 , comprises a multiplicity of forked fins 44, preferably arranged radially towards the contacts, so as to receive and split an arc appearing between the ends of the levers during of a cut.

These fins can be maintained either by shaped surfaces coming from molding with the insulating half-housings 3, 4, or be arranged inside a separate arc box placed inside the first volume'7.

The springs 38, 39 can also be either guided in half-housings 46, 47 half-housings, or be placed in guide bushings 46 ', 47' pinched between the half-housings and having these housings.

In lateral zones 48, 49 of the first interior volume 5, placed between the braids and the springs, two magnetic parts 50 respectively 51 are arranged, each taking the shape of a U, the branches 52, 53 respectively 54, 55 of which surround at least partially the arms of the levers, see Figures 1, 2 and 3; These magnetic parts are held in relief or hollow shapes carried by the half-housings.

The contact pads 28., 29 each have a transverse edge 56 respectively 57, placed on the side of the corresponding pivot, these two edges being substantially oriented in the extension of one another, see FIG. 4.

In a central zone 5 ′ of the first volume 5 which is between the contact levers and between the magnetic parts, a screen 32 is arranged which takes the form of a thin rectangular plate "e" made of insulating material, see also Figures 2 and 3.

This screen, whose own plane is placed in the RR 'plane, can move in this plane either thanks to two opposite and parallel lateral edges 58, 59 which are guided in two opposite guide grooves 60, 61 forming baffles which separate the two levers 16, 17 and carried respectively by an internal surface of each half housing, see Figure 3, or in an appropriate guide interval, see Figure 6 described later.

An upper edge 33 of this screen is placed against at least one, and possibly the two transverse edges 56, 57 of the contact pads constituting movable stops, and is held in this position by means of two armed compression springs 63, 64 of parallel axes which are applied, on the one hand, to a bottom 65 of the housing carrying the base 15 and, on the other hand, to two support points 66, 67 of the screen, opposite the upper edge 33 and neighbors of the lateral guide edges 58, 59.

A, voir figure 1.The two guide grooves extend sufficiently towards the arc chamber, so that the insulating screen can move under the effect of the springs and reach a position further from the bottom where the upper edge reaches point A, see figure. 1.

The operation of this circuit breaker results from the fact that when repulsion forces, which are applied to the arms of the levers and whose efficiency is improved by the magnetizable parts, separate the levers by an amount slightly greater than the thickness "e ", the insulating screen 32 escapes the rim 56, 57 and is very quickly propelled between the contact pads. The passage of this screen produces not only a stretching of the arc, which arises between the pellets, towards the fins, but also the interposition of an obstacle which prevents the pellets from coming into contact immediately after their separation, and which then operates a partial isolation of two symmetrical half-chambers 43 ′, 43 "which together form the entire chamber 43.

So that the arc quickly hooks onto the fins, possibly bypassing the upper edge 33 of the screen, and quickly goes towards the fins 44 ', 44 "of these half-chambers, two fins 68, 69, longer than the others, can be placed on either side of point A, and in the immediate vicinity of this point.

Furthermore, see FIG. 3, the screen may include an extension 70 directed towards the bottom or base of the housing, or have a lower edge sufficiently distant from '33 to avoid striking an arc between the lower ends of the levers, this extension being placed for example opposite the transverse rib 72 to form a baffle.

So that at least one of the edges, for example, the edge 57, of one of the levers, for example the lever 16, is placed at rest opposite the end 33 of the screen, this lever is placed in bearing on an abutment surface 45 of the housing, carried for example by an insulating transverse rib 72 which can be part of the housing or be worn by a particular piece as will be seen later; this support is operated by its return spring 38, the position thus occupied also serving to determine that of the other lever 17 which is subjected to the action of its own return spring 39. The two springs must therefore have, different characteristics so that this support on 45 is carried out in all cases; In a preferred embodiment, the spring 38 exerts on the lever 16 when the latter is at rest, a force directed from left to right, which is greater than the force which is exerted by the spring 39 in the opposite direction on the lever 17 when contact 29 is pressed on contact 28.

During an automatic opening, the lever 17 which is the least loaded, will therefore move away more quickly than the other.

The effectiveness of the switch-limiter device which has just been described is due in particular to the fact that the screen, thanks to its lightness, is very quickly propelled between the pellets, and that the contact levers are subjected to significant repulsive forces due to the small distance which can separate these levers when the screen has a small thickness.

The rearming of the device, which aims to move the screen from the position corresponding to that where the upper edge 33 is in A to the position shown in Figure 1, is performed using a flat pusher 78 of thin, see Figure 5. This pusher which is placed like the screen 32 in the plane RR 'slides downward thanks to two grooves 79, 80 belonging to the housing which guides its parallel edges 81, 82 when its upper end 83 passing through an opening 84 'of the roof 84 is subjected to an appropriate maneuver. This pusher which is maintained in the high position visible in FIG. 5 by elastic means not shown, also moves between the fins 68 and 69; to allow the arc to stretch between these fins 68, 69 towards the upper part of the chamber, the lower region 78 'of this pusher has a notch 78 "which also allows it not to prevent the contacts from being closed when the pusher is in the low position indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 5.

Between the side walls 40, 41, the roof 84 opposite the base 15, and the longitudinal walls 86, 87 of the housing on the one hand, and the form surfaces which hold the fins in the arc chamber 43, it is possible to have a path for the evacuation and rolling of the gases which appear during an automatic shutdown; such a channel comprises, for example, see FIGS. 1 and 3, an upper opening 88 opposite the levers, and extending in the plane PP 'between the points 88' and 88 "where two furthest fins end one of the 'other, a first channel 89, possibly obstacles such as 90', 90 "taking the form of mesh or perforated sheets, a second channel 91 'respectively 91" bypassing for example the housing 47, 46 of the pressure springs, and finally a exhaust port 92 'respectively 92 "opening for example in a side wall 41 respectively 40 in the vicinity of the terminals 12,13 see Figure 3 ..

The housing of the unipolar device can advantageously be presented in an elementary form containing only the elements necessary for cutting a phase conductor, so that several elementary housings can be associated side by side when it is necessary to carry out the protection of a polyphase line, see Figure 3, for example using coupling rods 93, passing through the various housings 94, 95, 96.

The amplitudes of movement of the levers being large in the vicinity of the contact pads, the screen was advantageously pressed on them so that its release is immediate. One could however retain an edge 120 of a screen 98 by a hook 117 of the lever 119 placed between the patch 115 and the pivot 116, as illustrated in FIG. 7; in this case, the upper edge 118 of the screen will nevertheless be placed in the vicinity of the contact pads so that the arc stretching and the galvanic separation occur very quickly after opening, as in the previous example.

The guide grooves 60, 61 of the screen, the rib 72 and the abutment surface 45 of the contact lever 16 can advantageously be carried by an insulating molded part represented at 100 in FIG. 6 and placed in the first interior volume. 5 between the half-housings at the time of assembly.

This part 100 here comprises a single groove or guide interval 101 for the screen 32, which is placed in the plane R R 'and which leads to two parallel cylindrical housings 102, 103, intended to receive the springs 63, 64; this groove 101 is limited by walls 104, 105, substantially parallel to the plane RR ', one of which carries the abutment surface 106 corresponding to 45 and which are all those connected to two external walls 107, 108 parallel to the median plane PP '.

These walls which locally isolate the contact levers 16, 17 and the metal branches of the magnetic parts 50 and 51 comprise two pairs of open external housings 109, 110 and respectively 111, 112 to receive these branches and cooperate in the mechanical holding of the magnetic parts. ; two neighboring housings 110, 112, arranged on the same wall as 108, are separated by a partition such as 113 to avoid an untimely arcing between two magnetic pieces.

The levers 16, 17 move in two notches 114, 115 which are placed between the walls 107, 108 and which end at the walls 104, 105.
