Claims (8)

1. A device for opening envelopes, comprising a stationary base having a knife holder mounted thereon for a stationary knife blade which knife blade, with its broad side face, is secured thereto in abutting relationship whilst being flush with the envelope abutment formed by the upper side of the knife holder, a movable knife blade connected to a knife holder which is swingably connected to the base and operable by a handle, the movable blade, with its broad side face being secured to a longitudinally inclined bearing surface of the movable knife holder, adjacent said movable blade a receding curved abutting surface for the envelope whose centre of curvature lies on the pivot axis of the movable knife holder and a limitedly movable resilient support of one of the knife holders to keep the cooperating knife blades in constant contact with each other, characterized in that the movable knife holder (3) is a substantially rectangular block (5), in that at the upper side of the knife holder the movable knife blade (10) is screwed on in horizontal position in that the handle (4) of the knife holder is formed thereto integrally, and in that the pivot axis (7, 46) of the knife holder is formed excentrically of its imaginary longitudinal centre axis.
2. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the handle (4) of the movable knife holder (3) extends upwardly and forwardly to the abutment (40) of the letter envelope.
3. Device according to claim 2, characterized in that the handle (4) extending forwardly has a viewing aperture (16).
4. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the handle (4) of the movable knife holder (3) extends rearwardly from the abutment (40) of the letter envelope.
5. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the movable knife carrier (3) has lateral arms (43) swingably supported at the front side (42) of the base part (1).
6. Device according to claim 5, characterized in that the swingably supported ends (45, 46) of the arms (43) of the movable knife holder (3) are loaded by springs (48).
7. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the letter abutment (40) is slightly sloping downward towards the knife blades (10, 23).
8. Device according to claim 7, characterized in that the plane of the abutment area (26) for the envelope extends approximately through the pivot axis (7) of the knife holder (3).
