- Modern vehicles, particularly commercial heavy goods vehicles are designed to carry heavier loads at greater speeds and this must be taken into account when designing wheel nuts.

- Torque was applied to a nut on a threaded stud and a measured clamp load was plotted against torque applied to the nut. A straight-line graph was obtained. The nut was then removed from the stud and subjected to 24 hours of salt spray and a degreasing agent. Torque was then applied to the nut on a stud as before and it was found that the plot of clanp load against torque followed the same line as that obtained before the salt spray and degreasing steps.

Abstract
Un ecrou de roue ayant une rondelle prisonniere comprend une tete d'ecrou filetee interieurement pourvue d'un epaulement s'etendant radialement vers l'exterieur, l'epaulement et la rondelle etant formes de facon a cooperer pour retenir la rondelle en position sur la tete d'ecrou. La forme de cooperation peut comprendre une levre tournee vers l'interieur qui s'engage dans un evidement peripherique de cooperation dans l'epaulement. Une interface conique portant sur l'ecrou et la rondelle fait un angle approprie d'environ 20 par rapport au plan radial de l'ecrou.
